It has been a very gloomy birthday.
Freedompath comments on Mar 10, 2018:
First, I would like to say, you need some kind words today...the birthday may not matter all that much as a day, but your loneliness does. Your picture tells me, that you want to matter to others (and you do), but the most important person that you need to matter to, is yourself! I read your ...

@Ceaselessmind then stop being that clown! At least not a clown...to hide behind! Now, if you are using it to bring cheer to others and to yourself...that is worth something! I think that you need to find out from, 'mr self'...if he is trying to buy what he needs from others? Even trying to impress others...will soon backfire, I bet that is not news to you? You deserve all that you desire, because that is what you (we) were made to do. I realize that you have a specific situation that I have not faced, but even I have had to 'claw' my way to 'meaning!' And from what I have studied and observed, a lot of people have faced this delimma! You need to do everything on purpose (with conscious thought) and see where it takes you. AND, don't give up, when you fail, because you will, sometimes! Focus on what supports your nature...And, what will happen in time is... you will find out what does and does not work for YOU. There is someplace that your 'gifts' (your personal attributes), are needed and appreciated. We have a need to give and receive...that is when we are fullfilled. You may not quiet grasp this idea, but as you grow into your 'true' nature...that is where your 'true' strength lies. I wonder if you have read, Rudyard Kipling's poem...'If' ? I kept a copy to refer to...I would find it and put it here, but I am in the middle of that move! Best to you, and keep posting...
Why is depression so complicated?

This is not going to be a popular answer but DRUGS! Mild depression, perhaps can be helped with therapy, exercise, oils, etc. But major depression? Clinical depression? Drugs. There’s no getting out of it any other way except suicide.

I tend to get very depressed at my birthdays too. It seems like a reminder of how little I've accomplished in life. Not many people even acknowledge my birthday unless they get a reminder from Facebook (which is a bit lame). I can't really remember having a "happy" birthday anytime in my adult life....
Freedompath replies on Mar 10, 2018:
@Charles1971...it made me sad, when you posted that you have never had a happy birthday as an adult. Do you have some happy days along the way, I sure hope so? I am not into birthdays, as much as most people. I may give something special to my friends or family, during the year, but I have difficulty remembering their birthdays! I have come to accept it, for what it is...it has nothing to do with my love and affection for any of them! So, from me to you...happy birthday to you, whenever it was!

What do you do when your child does something that makes you resentful?

I surely want to tackle this problem with you. I have 5 children...all 54-62. Now, you have every right to be crushed! Freedompath replies on Mar 10, 2018:
@Shawappa44820 ...when I made my statement about control, this is what I was referring to...things that you have no control over, your child's mother's behavior, complete control with things surrounding your son and even the world at large! Life itself can seem to overtake us and out of our control...because it most cases it is! (I don't know if you are an over controlling person, or not.) If you can't work with his mother, please refrain from disparaging comments about your son's mother. He is part of his mother and children take bad/good comments about their parents on, as something about them, too. Since my children's Dad, was a raging alcoholic, it was easy to want to tear him to bits, when they reported back to me, what went on at his house. But, most of the time, I caught myself and worked it out in my own mind. It is not easy to being an 'other home' parent, and especially thru the teenage years, which are the hardest of all. But, how you handle yourself now, will be the example for your son, to draw strength from, and believe me, that is important! Since my parenting skills sucked, I did work hard to keep my head on straight and I know (they told me so, as adults) it made a difference. Because, my children had tough times growing up. I am so sorry about your possession...that came from your mom...that you sacrificed for your son. It was a loving act, from both your mother and on your part... and that is lasting, it is strange how we view an object that is from a loved one. I am having to get rid of stuff from my children, because I want to get down to few things, but it is almost making me sick. (I have already done that with my mother's, things, she died 10 yrs ago). The best advice that I can give you or anyone is...learn to be with your 'hard' feelings! They can only destroy us, if you let them, but they can often times hurt us at our deepest level, too...but, in the end we come out stronger! So, as soon as you possibly can, pick your self back up and figure out what you can do that will make the situation better. That is what each of us have had to do, if you want to live in this world. You are only alone, in your mind with the 'hard' work. Others will reach out to you, if you ask...

@jorj just in case this interest you, I just heard a lecture on IQ test and it says that an average below 90, is 30% of the population. We need at least 115 to make a good college student. I point this out, because it occurred to me that it must be very difficult, trying to convince people on the low spectrum scale, complex ideas. They are just not equipped to analyze complex problems. I think we should make sure we understand issues, and not get to overwrought if a lot of other people see issues different. In some cases, I can see where I would be wasting precious energy! (This is just something i gleaned from this IQ lecture, tonight.) A point that I might make, is mental illness, can be found in any family. Columbine students came from families of professionals! One couple got divorced afterwards and she (college professor) is speaking on Ted Talks. I have no other information on the other family.

@jorj you are not bringing your own experience to the table! You are overreporting what others, are saying, not what your experience has taught you. Believe me, I am TOO, well informed on just about everything going on out in the world. But, my life is with my family, friends and the people that will cross my path, any where I am living. That is the main place that we learn and can be of help. This is where our life is played out and where our knowledge and experience is gained. Then we bring 'that' to the table and it is 'real' and authentic. Not someone else's taking points or what 'that other source' found out! This is where our strength lies...in our own truth...and if we learn new information that changes what we thought we knew, we make adjustments as truth is always evolving toward a greater truth!

@jorj well, that is the difference in how you and I take in information. Culturally, areas are a little different, but human behavior is the same. Children from the time of my children's generation, are scattered out all over the country, now. Lots of them were divorced, or came from divorced homes. None of them shot up any place! I am very familiar with the whole of the Atlanta area, which has a wide range of socioeconomic people. And I cannot recall a single 'shoot up,' and there are lots of divorced people in that area! You can trust me on that. I never judge the 'whole', by a few! We all have a small microcosm of a social order, in our own back yard. Human behavior, is the same...we just have different stressor, that trigger certain behaviors. When the anthologist, Richard Leaky, first started studing the ancient sculls, he found no evidence of violence in them. But, information was soon adjusted...as there was indeed cracked skulls, created from blows to the head. I can report, that in my first 50 years, it was robbers, family violence and now in then a shoot out with police! There were no mass shootings! And, I am/was, out and about in this country! That is just me paying attention.

One of my oldest son's classmate, who was a doctor and our mayor here, shot and killed himself in his home office, about 3 years ago. He loved guns! Had a collection! I do not trust people 100% who own a gun! And, I must inform you that I am still doing the same thing that I have done for 30 years...traveling all around this country alone without a gun and I never once had an encounter that put me in danger! I am not fearful of my fellowman. And, I have stories in my family of gun violence and if you are interested I have already written about them! People have accidents in all kinds of ways and die. I don't care about stats! I know behaviors and if you started right now, you would not cure all the mentally ill people in this country. I wish everyone had my luck, because pain can be a distraction from living. I did have a lot of psychotherapy over the years and I would think that it gave me a hand up. There is also a lot of pain, in my family, so we may have a predisposition to something, that has never been diagnosed! I would like to say, don't give up and work with what you have going for you at this moment. You are still, a person with talents and skills and hopes and dreams. Stay connected to them as that is 'who' you are...it is easy to fall into the belief, that you are your pain. My, 95 yr old neighbor, who had a very painful knee and heart problems, that prevented having surgery...was always saying, we 'must do stuff, that will distract us from our pain' I found the same thing to be true. Live your life, not your pain...you have a purpose to fullfill, regardless of your body...best of luck and keep posting!

@AtlGeekWoman ...if you are a parent, would you show up at a PTA meeting, easily sharing your 'swinging' life style? Feeling proud about your lifestyle? If not, then it is out of the norm of our society, then that forces us to hide a part of ourselves. Ofcourse, we must all live up to our own moral and ethical standards. That is something that has been tested out in good mental health no matter what therapeutic discipline you consult. I have no more proof that 'swinging' as a lifestyle is coercive to our mental health than you have otherwise. But, the proof is in the overall development of a human being over time. My assessment of addiction may clearly be in opposition to your assessment. But, I do have years of people around me with sex addictions and many others and how any addiction plays out in a person's life over time. @AtlGeekWoman...to begin with...it is not a 'norm' in this society (so negatively, effects self respect). Second, we must eat to survive...and yet we have food additions. This effects physical and emotional wellbeing. Sex, is a powerful force...like food...it too...can become an addiction. If a person has a mate that they have sex with, why would they need more sex...than what that mate can provide? Plus the mate is parceled out, as well. Then it stands to reason...that it is the pursuit of the sex itself ...camouflaged by a set of agreeable rules (but is it). Living is not all sex. We do not even need sex to survive. Sex is only a part of a bigger picture...there is still...providing for self and a mate and maybe children and then society. Otherwise, you may be stranded from the 'whole'...from self/mate or possibly society. That is what addiction does, it becomes 'the leader'...we are compelled to follow our leader and not our authentic nature...which for the majority of people must be developed over time. Living from any lie, cannot bring us to our higher nature.
Does anyone have an opinion of the swinger lifestyle?

You all rock! I appreciate your comments SO much. It’s stage 3, and gone to the lymph. Treatment is harsh, but working. I lost my Pop and stepdad already. To cancer and copd. I’m hanging in there. Again, thanks everyone! These words were exactly what I needed/wanted.

@Anonbene no...I was married 3 times. But. I also never had sex with every man that I was attracted to, either. And, all this time I am studying people around me with sex addictions...and it isn't a pretty sight over time!
