I do not know the answers to your questions but I have heard that if a moderator leaves the next senior member is given the reins to that group. As far as perks - somewhere on the points time line it says something about points/groups/moderators. And I know of several people who have a lot of groups & they also have TONS of points...

I only follow on derby day (my b-day is may 2 so one day I want to go watch live on MY DAY ?) but it is so neat to have a bit of background. I am similar with cutting horses. Worked on a breeding farm for a few years and with a couple of trainers.
