Heraclitus comments on Aug 28, 2018:
Repentance used to mean turning away from a sinful life and turning towards a good or godly life. That merited forgiveness and a second chance. Nowadays it seems to simply mean an excuse to live as evil a life as you want and still "go to heaven." Not sure when Christianity got turned on its head. I must have blinked.
Have you heard of the Half-Earth Project?
Heraclitus comments on Aug 28, 2018:
Hmm...nice thought, but whose half?
Apatheism?
Heraclitus comments on Aug 28, 2018:
Actually, I think the world is full of apatheists, they just don't use the term, and live as if they don't believe in God. I used to call my wife an "agnostic agnostic" because she didn't know if she was really agnostic or not. When I introduced her to the word "apatheist" she said, "That's me!" As for myself, I am an ignostic.
Lady comes to my door.

Frankly, telling her that "the universe is a chaotic mix of energy" probably played right into her paranoia about you.
How do religions really develop? They are not something that is spontaneous they must be created.

Heraclitus comments on Aug 24, 2018:
Jonathan Swift is underrated.
"It's not what I say, it's what the Bible says."
Heraclitus comments on Aug 23, 2018:
When they say something like that, they are in effect, admitting their conscience disagrees with the Bible. They are doing something their conscience tells them is unethical but they are allowing the Bible to override their conscience. So, then the question is if they were not indoctrinated in the Bible as a child and were reading any so-called "scripture" for the first time, would they do something evil or "sinful" just because some old book says so?
Is religion the cause of all (or most) wars?
Heraclitus comments on Aug 23, 2018:
It may not be that religion is the direct cause of the beginning of most wars, though it certainly is of some, but it sure is useful in uniting and motivating people against a common enemy, as in "if God is for us, who can be against us?" and "if God is on our side, the devil must be on theirs."

Heraclitus comments on Aug 23, 2018:
As an ex-Catholic, I can tell you that Catholics don't actually believe that any man, including the Pope, is infallible. (At least, if they understand their own religion.) That is a Protestant myth. Catholics believe that God the Holy Spirit is infallible. Infallibility only applies when the Pope is speaking Ex Cathedra under the direct influence of the Holy Spirit. Of course, if you don't believe in the Ex Cathedra dogma, it all falls apart.

Heraclitus comments on Aug 23, 2018:
There are different ways of being pro-life. Are you pro-life or anti-choice? Are you against the death penalty? Are you against birth control? Do you think a fertilized egg is fully human and has full legal rights as a person? If you are an atheist and don't believe in a soul, why would you think that and on what grounds would you deny women control and choice? Are you logically consistent in your belief or is it just a vague reference for life in all forms? Etc.
Donald Trump's Space Force Plans Analyzed by a Sci-Fi Expert [space.com]
Heraclitus comments on Aug 23, 2018:
The current function of the "Space Force" is in the domain of the US Air Force. Even the military questions the wisdom of creating another big government bureaucracy that currently has so little focus, let alone the proper funding to be of any real value.

Heraclitus comments on Aug 20, 2018:
I think it is a loss of faith in unbridled corrupt casino capitalism. Capitalism simply doesn't work without the proper institutional restraints. Look at what happened when Russia experimented with capitalism. It was a disaster that drove them back into an authoritarian state. It may, however, be too late for this country to go socialist, even if we wanted it to. There is already serious talk of cutting Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and government pensions. Where would a government with over 21T in debt get the money to pay for additional socialist programs without jacking taxes through the roof? We would probably end up like Venezuela or Greece.
Do you think we have a soul?
Heraclitus comments on Aug 20, 2018:
How the heck do you define a soul? What's the point of asking if something exists if you can't define it clearly?

Isn't Dogmatism worst than religion?
Heraclitus comments on Aug 17, 2018:
Monotheists tend to be the most dogmatic. Polytheists have to practice tolerance of other gods without condemning everyone else to everlasting hellfire for believing in a different god. Religions truly became dogmatic and intolerant and brutal when monotheism began to dominate society.

What about people who have not yet established enough credit to qualify for a credit card? I once had a check refused because I didn't have a credit card to back up it. What if your credit card gets damaged and you have to resort to cash? What if your credit card account gets frozen because someone hacked it and you have to resort to cash? How many people do you know that carry their checkbook around with them. If something goes wrong with your credit card on the spot you almost always have to resort to cash.

New Atheism, Worse Than You Think
Heraclitus comments on Aug 1, 2018:
This is a long critique of two new anti-New Atheism books that focuses mostly on socio-economic issues and "social justice" rather than on atheism itself. At least the rambling critique is honest enough to include some criticisms of the books. You could cherry pick what you want out of this lengthy critique, which has a rather unfocused conclusion, but beware of the Ad Hominem attacks of these books that distract from the actual atheist issues.

Heraclitus comments on Jul 30, 2018:
I'm not sure I really understand the point. Does that mean that anyone can create a group and only invite people that they like? And is the point that they would only invite people that they think might agree with them and keep out those who don't? Is the point to stifle differences of opinion? Or is the point to only invite people they think are intelligent enough to discuss certain issues? Is that what agnostic.com wants to become?
