LINKA single sentence that perfectly captures the utter madness of the Trump era
In an interview with Donald Trump earlier this week, conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt said something truly breathtaking. "You know, Mr. President, you and I disagree about the election, but we agree on so much," Hewitt told Trump, segueing into a conversation about China's hypersonic missiles. Talk about an other-than-that-how-was-the-play-Mrs. Lincoln moment! That Hewitt uttered that line without irony is a telling window into how conservatives have found ways to rationalize ...

LINKStop Calling Women Nags — How Emotional Labor is Dragging Down Gender Equality
Emotional labor is the unpaid job men still don't understand. BY GEMMA HARTLEY SEP 27, 2017 For Mother's Day I asked for one thing: a house cleaning service. Bathrooms and floors specifically, windows if the extra expense was reasonable. The gift, for me, was not so much in the cleaning itself but the fact that for once I would not be in charge of the household office work. I would not have to make the calls, get multiple quotes, research and vet each service, arrange payment and ...

By TOM KRATTENMAKER Tom Krattenmaker is a writer specializing in religion, meaning, and values in public life. How revealing that some in Donald Trump’s party use the term “impotence” to criticize the Biden administration’s handling of Russia’s Ukraine invasion. LINKSorry, fellow Italian-Americans: Columbus was a thug. But the church was the big problem
By Celia Viggo Wexler Despite my Italian heritage, I don't understand the adulation that some Italian-Americans continue to bestow on Christopher Columbus, who, as history demonstrates, was less a hero than a thug, exploiting and enslaving indigenous peoples. But the real culprit behind the subjugation of non-European peoples across the globe wasn't an individual, or even a monarch. It was the Roman Catholic Church. It's time the church owned that grievous mistake. As early as the ...

Coronavirus deaths in the United States are rapidly closing in on 100,000. The economic depression is stretching out ahead of us as far as the eye can see. Heather Cox Richardson On February 1, 1862, in the early days of the Civil War, the Atlantic Monthly published Julia Ward Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” summing up the cause of freedom for which the United States troops would soon be fighting. “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,” it began. “He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is ...

LINKMatt Gaetz’s Pledge of Allegiance stunt took an unfortunate turn
Matt Gaetz’s Pledge of Allegiance stunt took an unfortunate turn In hindsight, Matt Gaetz probably shouldn't have invited a murder suspect to lead the House Judiciary Committee in the Pledge of Allegiance. March 2, 2023 By Steve Benen Rep. Matt Gaetz caused a bit of a stir this week when he accidentally promoted Chinese propaganda during a committee hearing, but as it turns out, it was not his only problem on Capitol Hill. Brian Broome is the author of “Punch Me Up to the Gods: A Memoir” and will be writer-in-residence at St. Mary’s College (California) in 2022. During the first few days of class, my students are silent and nervous. They are college first-years, and the class is English Composition. By Sharon Bernstein (Reuters) - When her two-year- started feeling sick early last week, Tiffany Jackson didn't think it might be COVID-19. No one else in the family was sick. LINKReligious service attendance, mapped
Vermont (75%), New Hampshire (66%) and Maine (66%) have the highest share of adults who say they never or seldom attend church or religious services, compared to the national average of 49%, per a new Axios analysis of Household Pulse Survey data.
