I am. I'm pretty sure most of us here are at least "touched":
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 15, 2019:
I am sure there are those who think I am bonkers, or mad, or wacked out, crazy, weird, or just any of those combinations. I don't care. I'm to busy doing my thing to worry about what anyone else thinks (except maybe for my boss, and it's good if she thinks I'm a little crazy.) It was very freeing when I stopped caring what others think, and the real truth is that very few people are thinking about you for more than a moment.
Much easier said than done but I have been working on doing several things daily.

Why the poor pay more for toilet paper — and just about everything else - The Washington Post
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 13, 2019:
There are several ways to save money on, say, a roll of toilet paper. You can reach for the cheaper version: the store brand, or the singly-ply TP, or the stuff that feels like packing paper. Or you can buy in bulk, saving on each roll per unit. Or you can stock up when the deal is good, like when the corner store offers two packs for the price of one. The poor, who need all of these strategies, are much less likely to use the last two. They can't afford to, according to some revealing research by University of Michigan professor Yesim Orhun and Ph.D. student Mike Palazzolo (hat tip to Michigan Radio). Using panel data on more than 100,000 American households over seven years, they tracked purchases of toilet paper, which has the great benefit of being non-perishable and steadily consumed (it's hard to go without, but we also don't use more just because we happen to have more in the house). That's nearly 3 million toilet paper purchases. When Orhun and Palazzolo compared households with similar consumption rates shopping at comparable stores and controlling for two-ply TP they found that the poor were less likely than wealthier households to buy bigger packages, or to time their purchases to take advantage of sales. By failing to do so, they paid about 5.9 percent more per sheet of toilet paper a little less than what they saved by buying cheaper brands in the first place (8.8 percent). Perhaps this sounds like a subtle discovery about minor household goods. But it supports a larger point about poverty: It's expensive to be poor. Or, to state the same from another angle: Having more money gives people the luxury of paying less for things. In the case of toilet paper, or any number of other storable goods like canned tomatoes, rice or paper towels, shoppers have to pay more up front to reap savings over time. And the poor often can't afford to do that to pay $24 for a 30-pack instead of $5 for a four-pack. Then, because they can't stock up, they can't afford to wait until the next sale comes around. When the toilet paper runs out, they have to run to the store for another small quantity of it whatever it costs in that moment. Because they can't use one money-saving strategy, they can't use the other, either. "You can create a poverty trap even around the toilet paper that we study," Orhun says. Middle-class consumers behave quite differently, she adds. "They buy when the price is right and wait when the price isn’t. But poor people don’t have that luxury." She and Palazzolo show that the problem isn't simply that the poor aren't savvy about sales or bulk buying. They're more likely to use these tactics closer to the beginning of the month, when they have more cash on hand from paychecks or benefits. Then, they behave more like...

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 12, 2019:
Remember, women have been "birthin" babies since the beginning of time. We're evolved to protect the babies that we carry, and if the baby is getting squished YOU will be uncomfortable and have to change positions. That baby is all cushioned up inside you, she isn't going to feel much of anything. Amazing how we have evolved to be efficient incubators. That said, talk to your doctor or NP or childbirth educator if you have concerns. I was a stomach sleeper until after I got pregnant, and as I grew larger I started sleeping on my side.
This is most of why I'm not around the site much lately.

People who have Cystic Fibrosis are likely immune to cholera. At one time that may have helped them survive, however now it has no useful purpose. There are a few other conditions that are like that, necessary from an evolutionary standpoint, but no longer useful or needed, and indeed harmful. I have a 30 year old nephew with CF. It is good that you have managed your diabetes so well. I have been pre-diabetic for years. When I stopped working 6 months ago I also stopped eating sugar and started exercising. I am no longer pre-diabetic, and 30ish pounds and a full size smaller. Now I am back to work and having trouble fitting exercise in. But I will continue to abstain from sugar and eat well, so the weight will come off, just slower.

HippieChick58 comments on Mar 10, 2019:
When I was a renter it was in the contract that the management handled snow removal, and indeed all maintenance inside and out. You might want to check your lease. If management is not paying you in some form or fashion they may be taking advantage of you, and IF you get hurt they may be liable for your injuries. This could open a can of worms.

This is likely not an exhaustive list. And this device that has all that information is smaller than that rotary phone. As vegans we talk probably more about diet then the rest of it.
HippieChick58 comments on Mar 8, 2019:
I tend to be more of a flexitarian. When I am alone I eat pretty much vegetarian and pushing into vegan. When I'm with my kids or my kids come over I fix meals with meat for them and eat whatever they have fixed which usually has meat. I don't need anyone else to eat as I do. I don't want anyone else telling me how I should eat. We're all fully functioning adults and therefore get to make up our own minds about what/when/how to eat or live our lives. Some people treat their diets like a religion. I have left one religion, I'm not about to get tangled up in another.

I found out about the program in my area from a United Methodist pastor, and you don't have to be a church member or religious in any way to take advantage of that program. That would not be a deal breaker for me, but... to be a long term relationship I'd have to redo most of my recipes. I love onions and garlic. Lots and lots and lots of onions and garlic.

I would LOVE it to live walking distance from a grocery store. I don't drink beer, and cars are transportation only, they really don't excite me. I'm a nerd, and I enjoy it. If being a nerd is why I am still single, then I'm going to die alone. You're young, please don't give up on finding someone. My ex was 29 when we met. And yes, he's a nerd too. We raised several nerdy/geeky kids.
I finished reading a book today.

Good for you for getting back to reading. I love to read, it is usually so relaxing. I keep track of my books on Goodreads, are you familiar with it? Goodreads.com
Just sayin'

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
