Wow, that is a heavy burden. You need to do what you think a good daughter would do while still protecting yourself from her paranoia. That means you need to set boundaries, but because of her mental illness that might be difficult. My point being that your mom must be 85ish, she sadly won't be around much longer, just a fact of biology. So, do what you need to do that when she is gone you won't feel like you have neglected her or been a bad daughter. You can't change the past, you can only learn from it.

Since I have been off work I have averaged walking about 10,000 steps a day. I have read several really good books. I meditate almost daily. I have gotten a hair cut (it was seriously needed). I have gotten my nails done about every other week. I have decluttered my closets, a bedroom, kitchen cabinets and pantry. I have lost 20ish pounds, sold the too large clothing on eBay, and cleaned windows. Yeah, I think I seriously need to look for a new job, but I feel great!
How old were you when you got your first job? ? A. for me ?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 27, 2018:
I was 16, started working in the restaurant that my mom had worked in before she died. When I met with the owner/manager he looked at me real hard and said, "Are you Minnie's daughter?" Yeah, I got the job. My brothers had also worked for the restaurant, as did my younger sister later on. Good family restaurant, no longer there.

Does age really matter in a relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 26, 2018:
It matters to me. I just don't find younger men to be a turn on. My oldest will be turning 34 in 9 days. When the ffffff did that happen? But I digress. I am 60, will be 61 in 6 weeks. Daughter # 2 "suggested" that I date men closer to my age than to her sister's age. So to keep my kids happy and for my own sensibilities I should not date a man that is younger than 48, and really it depends on the individual. As for older than me, depends. Some guys just seem old old, and some are chronologically old but have a young mind set. And yes, keeping the kids happy is important. They will be taking care of me in my older age.

For this type of group where so many people struggle, they don't need additional crap. This needs to be a safe place. I'd say you were justified to block at the first offense to make sure this is a safe place for everyone.

When I was married we moved frequently, and every time we moved we had professional movers paid by ex's employer. I accumulated lots and lots of books. As I was getting ready to move into an apartment about 10 years ago I purged those books. Most of them hadn't been read in years and only got dusted when we moved. I schlepped bags and boxes of books to a place called "Half Priced Books" and sold them. I have never lived in a house with an accessible attic to fill with junk, and most of the places I lived didn't have basements either. Longest occupancy of any house post childhood has been 5 years. Even now every once in a while I go through the books on my shelves to see if there isn't something that can be sold or otherwise purged. Since I've been unemployed I've been doing more purging and selling, not only books but anything I don't need. Less is more.

I'd like to see what my cats would do to that... When I was stationed in Augsburg, Germany (1980) I worked in a secure area, we had a hedgehog family that lived under the guard shack. Occasionally they'd get in the way and have to be moved to a neutral location. I knew nothing about hedgehogs, but I had a hat with a brim handy. I just scooped the little bugger up and dropped him in the grass. Some of the A'holes I worked with would not have been so gentle.

Any of you fine folks making any homemade gifts for the holidays?
HippieChick58 comments on Nov 25, 2018:
I'm not making handmade or homemade gifts for this year, though my daughters are all getting quilts for their next birthdays. All the quilts are about 66X76 inches, throw size. Good to cuddle under while watching TV. All the fabrics are the same, the layout of the blocks is the difference. The first to receive her gift will be my oldest, her birthday is December 5th. Her quilt is done. The second birthday is the youngest daughter's, Jan 14th, that quilt is also done. The third for my middle daughter is still in the shop to be quilted. Then when that is done I have to bind it to finish it. That birthday is not until March 15th, so I've got some time. These are the completed and ready to be gifted quilts.

HippieChick58 comments on Nov 24, 2018:
I have gone shopping twice on Black Friday, neither time for Xmas gifts. The first time was just prior to divorce when I needed some stuff to furnish the apartment I was moving into. The second time was about 4 or 5 years ago, I worked a snowy Thanksgiving day, and dropped my phone and it broke. I don't have any phone number memorized now, so I knew if I had trouble driving home from work, I was up shit creek without a paddle. I made it home and Friday morning I was at the Sprint store at opening time to replace my phone. This year the family had changed our gifting strategy. The grandbabies get gifts, the adults are entered into a gift exchange throught a web site called Elfster. Elfster allows for rules to be set up, I won't get the ex as my recipient, ex won't get me or the unmarried daughter's partner, and spouses won't draw each other. So, with just grandbabies and one other recipient, my shopping is DONE long before Black Friday.

More freak out that went on for days. And then I noticed the calendar had only ONE MORE PAGE on it, and I was totally convinced the world was ending. A few days later my mom put up a new calendar.... I asked how she could do that, and I learned about calendars. I was so relieved!! I'm convinced my mom thought I'd lost my mind. I think that was the defining moment of my childhood.

My daughter will have worked out a timeline for when every step needs to be done, she did not get that organizational skill from me. I will be taking a side dish, sweet potatoes, cranberries, and apples with a sweetish crunchy topping. It is quite good, really, and vegan as some of the partner's family keeps vegan. Jan 2019. Quilt for 2 year old granddaughter, just learning her colors. Her mama wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
