LINKRep. Eric Swalwell reminds us who really has the right to complain when it comes to COVID-19
Even though I’m not a parent (you can thank me later, nonexistent kids who were never forced to explain my Igloo cooler-sized head and piquant yeti musk to your friends and classmates), I feel every bit of this mini-Twitter thread from Rep. Eric Swalwell. I enjoy Swalwell’s takes, which tend to be clear, concise, amusing, and acerbic. And when it comes to the perpetual waves of death that have washed over our land since Donald Trump decided to politicize the coronavirus, the congressman ...

Heather Cox Richardson Senate Republicans will not issue any sort of a platform before next year’s midterm elections. At a meeting of donors and lawmakers in mid-November, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said that the Republican Party’s 2024 nominee would be responsible for deciding on an agenda. The Republican senators in 2022 will simply attack the Democrats. Rather than advancing any sort of a positive program, Republican Senators will be focusing on culture wars. ...

The measure passed the House by a vote of 221 to 212 with only one Republican, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, voting yes. “This government should be shut down,” Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said. “You want to know why it should be shut down? Heather Cox Richardson The U.S. economy is booming. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testified today before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, saying that although the rise in COVID cases due to the Delta variant had slowed recovery, the gross domestic product is still on track to grow about 5% in 2021. This year, though, that normal firehose is intensified by the news of the new Omicron COVID variant that the World Health Organization has labeled a “variant of concern.” Epidemiologists in South Africa first identified Omicron on Wednesday, November 24, but the variant did not necessarily originate there: South African doctors were simply the first to identify it. Heather Cox Richardson Today, Nate Cohn noted in the New York Times that the policies President Joe Biden and the Democrats are putting in place are hugely popular, and yet Biden’s own popularity numbers have dropped into the low 40s. It’s a weird disconnect that Cohn explains by suggesting that, above all, voters want “normalcy.” Heaven knows that Biden, who took office in the midst of a pandemic that had crashed the economy and has had to deal with an unprecedented insurgency ...

In March 2021, Congress passed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan to stimulate the economy, which had withered during the coronavirus pandemic. The plan extended unemployment benefits and provided stimulus payments to...

Heather Cox Richardson Republican state legislatures are gerrymandering districts to elect members to the House of Representatives. The results are extreme. According to voting expert Ari Berman, in Ohio, where former president Trump got 53% of the vote in 2020, the new maps would give Republicans 86% of seats. In North Carolina, where Trump won 49.9% of the vote, Republicans would take 71–78% of seats, which translates to a 10–4 advantage if the voters split the vote evenly. In ...

Heather Cox Richardson While the news has been full of stories about how Trump-like Glenn Youngkin’s win in yesterday’s Virginia governor’s race spells disaster for Democrats going into 2022, the election news is not at all such a clear story. The Virginia governor’s race almost always goes against whichever party is in the White House; indeed, journalist Eric Boehlert, who studies the press, noted that this pattern is so well established that in 2009, during President Barack ...

Heather Cox Richardson Americans appear to be waking up to the reality that our democracy is on the ropes. Emerging details about how hard Trump lawyer John Eastman pushed his memo with the plan of how Trump could steal the 2020 election, along with the chronology of the events surrounding the January 6 insurrection compiled by reporters for the Washington Post, show that we came perilously close to a successful coup d’état. LINKCan Cats See Optical Illusions? This Cute Feline Investigates - Nerdist
Cats are undoubtedly clever creatures. The species is known for getting into all kinds of mischief. From stealthily stalking their prey to making their every desire known, cats are ahead of the curve. But this video by Hosico Cat begs the question, can cats see optical illusions? While cats don’t seem to be able to, for instance, recognize themselves in the mirror, optical illusions are a bit different. The illusion only requires sight, not precisely a deeper level of understanding. The ...

LINKQuitting Your Job Never Looked So Fun
By John Herrman Oct. 29, 2021 In making sense of the Great Resignation — the phrase coined for the record rate at which Americans have quit their jobs this year — it’s important not to lose sight of the fundamentals. We’re living in a pandemic. There’s a child-care crisis. Workers across the board are worn out. Others are just over the grind. It also helps to read some receipts. For months, text exchanges between fed-up employees and their villainous bosses have been going ...

Heather Cox Richardson For all the news stories that seem to tug us in one direction or another, there is just one overarching story in the news for Americans today. We are in an existential fight to defend our democracy from those who would destroy it. People seem to hark back to films from the 1930s and 1940s and think that so long as we don’t have tanks in our streets, our government is secure. But in this era, democracies die more often through the ballot box than at gunpoint....
