Best ever lover, did you have one?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
When I was young and foolish, at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts I had an encounter with a supply clerk after hours in the supply room. It was amazing. As is the Army way, he was transferred shortly after that, and then I went elsewhere. I don't think we would have been a good couple, but that one night was the best I have ever had.
Recently I had to send my beautiful cat, Appollo, to the Rainbow Bridge.

I am so sorry for your loss. A year ago November I sent my old girl to the Rainbow Bridge. She was 16 and my heart cat. In February last year I adopted Xena, she's two now. Last month I adopted Zelda, she's about 6 months. I love my furgirls. It has been "interesting" at my house ever since the baby joined us....
ARE YOU GRATEFUL I know I am.
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
I am grateful to my parents that I am here. I am grateful to my sister that she is who she is and my best friend. I am grateful to my employer that we have a mutual understanding that I bust my butt for them and they provide pay and other benefits so I can keep what I got. I'm grateful to my ex that we produced amazing kids and didn't mess them up too bad. You don't have to be grateful to a who, you just have to be aware that you're pretty well off compared to others. You didn't do anything to "earn" being born in the first world, but I'm damn happy that I was.
How mobile are you?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:

Marriage... Are there any divorcees out there who actively hope to get married again?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
I doubt I ever remarry, I have strong financial incentive not to marry. So if the gent in question is independently wealthy and will provide for me should he go first, then I'd consider it. As it stands now, I just want a very long term cohabitation.

Do you have a (relationship with your) car?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
I have an 11 year old red Toyota Rav4. My ex always wanted to buy new cars, his folks bought a new car every other year, and the older cars ended up as cars for grandkids to drive as they got to be teenagers and got their license. They almost always had Chevy Citations or the like. After we had kids I persuaded the ex that we needed a minivan, and we had 3 Chrysler Voyagers in 18 years. When the kids were leaving home he thought the last Voyager was getting old and after test driving every smaller SUV, I chose the Rav4. I kept the Rav after the divorce. The youngest named it Elmo. Elmo has a sunroof which I love. Elmo is also paid for, which I love. I have told the kids that when they think I should stop driving they will likely have to pry Elmo's keys out of my cold dead hands.

Americans/slavery Germans/holocaust
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
This is very sad, and I understand it should be. Slavery, US Apartheid of the Indigenous peoples, and the Holocaust are horrible examples of man's cruelty to man. I have been to Dachau and to the US Holocaust museum. It was easy to distance it as happening over there. However slavery and the apartheid of the indigenous people of the US are largely swept under the rug. I think in the US as a nation we need to identify our responsibility to see that ends. To acknowledge it and put process in place to assist the descendants of those harmed, and to educate the future generations of how easy it was to look the other way. I personally did not participate, but I am a descendant of those that did, and I have benefited as my skin is white, and as long as I am breathing I will speak out against that inhumanity and demand justice.

HippieChick58 comments on Feb 3, 2018:
Of course I love chocolate, but something that shows he is listening to me. A weekend get away, someplace cozy. A gift certificate to dig up a new garden patch for me in the spring or a similar gift of service. I like flowers and house plants, but young cats live in my house, most of the plants are gone now. Cleaning and detailing my car would be awesome!
Should I go Vegan?

go slowly to allow your body and mind to adapt. cut out the bacon and processed meats first. Eat as close to the state it is found in nature. I usually eat mostly a vegetarian diet. I do have eggs fairly often, and fish sometimes. Rarely ever pork products and I avoid all highly processed foods. You might also consult a dietitian.

People say that Christmas is a depressing time of year; I think it's valentines. What do you think?
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 2, 2018:

And when I drive to work (I go directly east) if the sun is out it is blinding everyone and all the other drivers are stupid (yes, I whine.) I just grit my teeth and dream of spring.

They won't let me give blood. I lived in German in the mid to late 80s. I ate foods obtained locally. I may be a carrier of creutzfeldt jakob disease, aka Mad Cow (and that would explain so much.) 30 years later I still cannot give blood in the US, however the child I carried for 9 months and gave birth to in Germany can donate blood. Go freaking figure.

Co-parenting and bad attitudes and younger sibling
HippieChick58 comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Mothers of teenagers know why some animals eat their young. Buckle your seat belt, you're in for a few wild years. Consistency is the key, and clear communication of expectations. One of my kids ended up in a room stripped of all comforts until her attitude improved, she had basics, and I chose her clothes for the day. No electronics, not even a lamp. She was forced to spend time with the family. Correct behavior earned her stuff back. You have to have some backbone and be ready for some tough love. And let him/her know that you love them. My awful teen turns 30 this year and is an amazing young woman. I'm so glad I didn't drown her!

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I have two cats, Xena is almost 2, Zelda is about 7 months. The I've had Xena almost a year and Zelda for about 3 weeks. They're still working things out between them. They both are on the counters and tables far more often than I'd like. The baby likes to carry pencils around and play with them. They both knock stuff over and off tables. Zelda is much more "in your face" than Xena, but both of them like to be wherever I am. They both love little balls of paper. I wad up receipts and toss them, and they play for hours. They have also distributed my earring pretty much throughout my house. I may never be able to pair all of them back up. If I wore them more often I'd probably mind it, but it was probably time to cull them out anyway. The worst thing is Zelda playing with hanging things. My cuckoo clock gets stopped every day, the shower curtain rod has been moved, and pull cords for blinds have been attacked. What was I thinking getting a kitten, but I love my little tornado.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Wow, you touched a nerve. My mom was sweet and kind. The elevator went to the top, it just didn't necessarily go quickly. It took a while for her to get jokes, especially if they were slightly off color. My dad's brother was so in love with her that he fell in love with her sister too, and married her. And they're still happily married 70 years later. Anyway, my mom gave all for her family. 6 kids and my dad was a brickmason, and frequently unemployed. His job was seasonal and he did not tone down his opinions. My mom was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in 1972, and passed on in November 1972. I was 14. As a woman you never get over losing your mama.
Is being overweight the new fad?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I think many people regard "normal" weight as fat, given the Hollywood/movie star/model anorexia that we have been subject to for so long. The reality is more Americans are overweight than ever before. There is so much sugar in our food chain, even foods that aren't sweet have excess sugar. It is a filler, it is dirt cheap. Which is why I don't eat boxed foods and try to eat as close to natural as possible. There is more sugar in our food supply now than there has been in the last 50 years, which is why our grandparents were healthier than we are. I kicked sugar 2.5 years ago and lost 50 pounds. I changed jobs and stress caused me to put 15 pounds back on. Now I'm trying to get back in control, some days are better than others. Your pill, my friend, is to read labels. Keep your sugar under 30 grams a day. That is the first and most important step. Then eat more veggies, less meat. (Heresy! I know). If the diet is not controlled all the exercise in the world is not going to help, even my doctor admitted that. Sugar leads to inflammation which leads to clogged arteries, and arthritis to start with. Excess sugar also leads to Diabetes. DM2 is on the rise in the US, elementary aged children now have DM2, that was unheard of a generation ago. There are some good documentaries and TED talks on this, Food, Inc being one. Fascinating stuff.

I got my flu shot last year because I started a new job and therefore a new pool of germs. And most of my coworkers have school aged kids. I got my flu shot this year because they relocated our office to another building and I'm working among more people in a more open environment. Next year, maybe I will be brave enough to skip the flu shot. However, so far I've been well. I work disability claims and I've worked a few that people have been sick enough to qualify for short term disability, which means you're out of work for usually more than a week.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
