I cannot tell a lie, or can I?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 22, 2018:
We all lie from time to time. Some folks lie every time their lips are moving and most of them are elected officials.
Moral question?

My nephew has cystic fibrosis. I'd be good with preventing that. Designer children, not so much.
Thoughts on kids? Have them? Want them? No!
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 22, 2018:
My "baby" is 26, and has a baby of her own. My oldest is 33 and will have her first child in May. The middle child says she will never have babies but is happy to be an Auntie. I always wanted to be a mom, and I mostly enjoyed raising my kids. They turned into amazing adults and are all doing pretty well. I think I done good and they've done good and being a grandmother is amazing.
My kids like to go to Sunday school.
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 22, 2018:
The cross was a torture device, the Roman government crucified hundreds if not thousands of people. It was a pretty gruesome way to die. Sounds like that is a rocking adult class and your pastor sounds lame.
Should a man be allowed to force a woman to carry his child?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 22, 2018:
My belief is that any time you have unprotected sex you are taking the chance of pregnancy. If you don't want a baby, don't start one. I had birth control discussion with my girls when they were in middle school. There are too many forms of BC that are fairly simple, and if you can't use one, don't have sex. That being said, guys also need to wrap their whoppers. I do agree that it is a woman's body and a woman's choice, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Abortion is not easy. I know it would be awkward to have the conversation, but ask your partner if they are protected and what if we do start a baby.
If you knew you were going to die one year from today, what would you do and how would you want to ...

Somewhere along the line the men gained power and societies became male dominated. Women have received short shrift for hundreds of years or more. Have you read the bible? Women are not valued at all. That is why women are marching now. We want our status restored, we want men out of our uteruses and private lives. We want our voices heard. We want equal consideration with men. You're an enlightened male, I hope you will add your voice to with ours.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 21, 2018:
I am a boomer. When the boomers were school age, schools were built. When the baby bust followed, school districts sold schools. The elementary school my former husband went to was bought by a church. Real estate never lies around, it will be bought and re purposed. There is no lack of demand for space. They might lose some money but I don't see that as being a concern.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 21, 2018:
If I understand this correctly, if I am new and I want to discuss something and I'm told we've done that already, that I should go check out the old stuff. I think it is the nature of groups like this that topics get revisited frequently, If you've already contributed your $.02 then you can ignore. Some of us might like to see what the newer folks have to say or add things we didn't think of the first (and possibly second and third....) time around. I think that is the nature of conversations. I wouldn't want newer folks to feel like there are hurdles and insider conversations going on.

I believe that the government needs to look out for the common good of all people, especially those that are more vulnerable: elderly, young, and/or differently-abled. It is both intellectual and emotional. The government needs to set standards because private business isn't. Look at big pharma and medicine. People should be put before profit. No company should have the CEO making 1000 times what his employees make. The hoarding of wealth is one of the major ills of our society.

Does your friends gift you religious books or souvenirs?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 21, 2018:
My kids know better than to give anything like that. If I got a book it would go to the library or used book store. My stance is to accept, say the right thing which is usually "thank you," and then go on as I would be going on. What I do with the gift is not their business, but then I don't have relatives to keep happy and friends that would give gifts are fellow Humanists or Atheists.

HippieChick58 comments on Jan 21, 2018:
We were an active church going family when the kids were growing up. My kids pretty much figured out on their own that it was BS, going off to college helped. We were a military family, so away from biological family and the church was our family and social life. I led several groups, did bible studies, the kids went to VBS, sunday school, church, choir and church camp. Their dad got more and more uninvolved with them as he got more involved with his religious website. Post divorce I tried to find a church, but the truth is churches are not welcoming of middle aged single women. Then I was introduced to Zeitgeist, and did some additional reading and it was like an awakening. My kids attitude was "what took you so long."

I worked awfully damned hard to get lucky. My kids are amazing now, but I worked with them and was there for them, and I was a "mean" mom that held them accountable and kept them from doing stupid stuff and gave them enough room to do stupid stuff with some safety. My less than humble opinion is in parenting, you don't get lucky. You do the work. Dog trainers will tell you a person gets the dog they deserve. I put time and effort into training my dog too, he was awesome. Same as my kids. There are some things I couldn't change. The youngest takes the easy way out and is very laid back, too laid back, kinda flaky. But there is only so much you can do. She's not horrible. Nature vs Nurture.

Natural Selection, or Universal Healthcare?
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 20, 2018:
What is the price of human life? What is the price to society of neglecting health? The Tide pod issue is not a healthcare issue, it is a marketing and social media issue. When heathcare is rationed the health of the population suffers and it costs more in the long run. ERs are used for primary care which wastes their resources. If every citizen has access to health care and can take care of their basic health, medical costs will drop. For example, if diabetes is treated properly it will avoid endless complications. ERs frequently end up treating and admitting poor diabetic individuals who end up with emergency amputations and other complications. That is NOT a good use of resources. The US is so far behind the rest of the world in this aspect it is shameful.

Through my work I deal with some religious organizations. I hear or read "have a blessed day" or similar comments frequently. I just let them roll on past. Don't get your garters in a knot for something trivial. I don't make it a habit to discuss my religion or lack thereof at work, or much of anyplace else. I know you're in a conservative area, I used to live in the KC area. My policy is to share on a "need to know" basis. Do they need this information, or do I need to put it out there? Usually not. Just like if I had a medical condition, ie: Would it affect someone negatively to know I had Herpes? Not that I do. Also, consider the intention, they're wishing you well. Welcome to the site, I think you will like it here.

I do like the idea of a tree growing out of my remains though. I'm not the party type. I have a friend who wants pregnant nuns at his funeral. Several of his lady friend are to obtain habits and strap on a pillow. I think a post-menopausal pregnant nun would be hysterical.

I don't think it is a one size fits all situation. In my work day I frequently have to contact HR departments for additional information. Once in a while they respond in seconds, and I always try to thank them and let them know how amazing I think that is. It is tax time and HR departments and my company are swamped, so turn around time of many days is more the norm. I try to say something good as soon as there is something good to say. The other side of that is something I got from Lord Mountbatten many years ago. "Never complain, never explain." The never explain I usually don't get to skip, but only complain if it is truly constructive.
How do I increase my level???
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 20, 2018:
From your home screen, click on your star that shows your level. That will take you to a screen where it will show you your points and how to get more points. And just chat, comment, like, makes posts. It adds up pretty fast until you get to level 7. Then it is like swimming in molasses.
1998:in 20 years we’ll have flying cars! 2018 we literally have to tell people not to eat Tide ...
HippieChick58 comments on Jan 20, 2018:
LOL! Yeah it is so sad. MAGA isn't working! The knowledge that in a few years my caregivers are going to be people that ate Tide pods makes me scared, very scared.

January 13, 2021 My newest and smallest grandchild. She arrived 5 weeks early and is now 2.5 weeks old and is less than 7 pounds. I've never held such a small baby before. She is quite perfect and very amazing. I love being a Grammy.
