November 2019
Its the weekend. What do you have planned?
HippieChick58 comments on Aug 15, 2020:
I am sewing, which falls into the category of what else is new. And doing laundry is likewise. Tomorrow I will have my online book club, and my daughter will deliver my groceries and visit for a bit.
HippieChick58 replies on Aug 15, 2020:
@Sonja44 I have made bowl cozies, they are very handy. The picture was my last completed project. Current project started out small and evolved into a quilt for a double bed. Currently I have one more quilt at the longarm shop to be quilted. I have no idea how long til the current project is ready to go to the shop. And then in September my daughter should learn the gender of the next grandchild, and then I have a baby quilt to make. I always have a project or 10 in works.

HippieChick58 replies on Aug 15, 2020:
I guess I am fortunate that the few relatives close are my kids and quite liberal and smarter than hell. The more distant relatives are liberals or reasonable conservatives, and the even more distant relatives I don't keep up with and I don't care. Some I know are evangelical and all that entails, but they're not part of my life. The door creaked open earlier this spring, and I pretty much helped them nail it closed, but not about politics.

HippieChick58 replies on Aug 13, 2020:
I started to say no, as I live alone and don't generally take pictures as I'm working. Then I remembered as I laid it out I took pictures to share with my sister as she is also a quilter. I use my dining room floor to lay out my quilts, as once I move the table it is the only room with enough open floor space. And then the kitties have to investigate, and "help." The first two pictures have been rotated 90° to the right when I loaded them up from my phone. The last one is as it should be. The stitching that was done by the long arm machine is visible on the finished quilt if you can enlarge it enough.

My kids are all adults, and their kids are all preschool/infants. They don't have to make the hard decisions. My granddaughter stays home with her dad's mom as her day care doesn't have hours that work for her parents (they are carpenters, no remote work for them). The grandson goes to daycare, his parents work from home. I had that little guy for two days as he could not go to daycare after running a fever. There would be no way to work while he is awake, he wore me out! The school district I live in has decided to start a week late and start remote and reassess in a few weeks. I applaud that decision. As to closings, it is going to be very dependent on each school and how well they navigate the pandemic. There are districts closing already. Scary times we live in.

Did Jewish Slaves Build the Pyramids?

HippieChick58 replies on Aug 8, 2020:
From the article: But if neither Jews nor Israelites nor Hebrews were in Egypt until so many centuries after the pyramids were built, how could such a gross historical error become so deeply ingrained in popular knowledge? The story of Jewish slaves building the pyramids originated with Herodotus of Greece in about 450 BCE. He's often called the "Father of History" as he was among the first historians to take the business seriously and thoroughly document his work. Herodotus reported in his Book II of The Histories that the pyramids were built in 30 years by 100,000 Jewish slaves. Unfortunately, in his time, the line between historical fact and historical fiction was a blurry one. The value of the study of history was not so much to preserve history, as it was to furnish material for great tales; and a result, Herodotus was also called the "Father of Lies" and other Greek historians of the period also grouped under the term "liars". Many of Herodotus' writings are considered to be fanciful by modern scholars. Coincidentally, the text of the Book of Exodus was finalized at just about exactly the same time as Herodotus wrote The Histories. Obviously, the same information about what had been going on in Egypt 2,000 years before was available to both authors. Note: In point of fact, Herodotus only says 100,000 "workers". He does not mention either Jews or slaves. So even this popular belief seems to be in error, and the origin of the idea of Jews building the pyramids remains a mystery. –BD

There is a temporary shortage as there is less financial activity. The government is not trying to phase out coins. When I was in Germany with US Forces in the late 70s and mid 80s there was a penny shortage on the bases, our change was rounded to the nearest nickle.
