Should prostitution be illegal?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it. I do think you said it well.
Personally, Was 2017 A Good Year For You Or A Bad Year? Explain Why.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
There is no middle ground in the poll. It wasn't the best year for me, it wasn't fabulous or horrific. I got through, I'm still employed, my health is reasonably good. I expect if I checked I had a record of lack of sleep and anxiety. Didn't find love, Der Drumpf is still president. However, Sammy Grace (grandchild) is thriving, my kitty makes me laugh, and I'm still employed, and I made a quilt, read a stack of really good books. Could be better, could be lots worse.
Secular humanism?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
I am a member of Omaha Metropolitan Area Humanists Association (OMAHA) and pretty much consider myself as much a Humanist (or secular humanist) as much as a atheist.
Does the lack of beleif in an afterlife bring you fear or comfort?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
My DNA will carry on, I have kids and now grandkids. I will leave a legacy for them, there will be stuff around for decades that SamSam and those yet to come will say "oh Grammy made this for me." That gives me comfort, that is my afterlife.
Single or Partnered, looking or not?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 30, 2017:
Single, looking but I am cognizant that the odds are hugely slim. When I first considered divorce I read an article that said most men in their 50s and above were looking for "nurses with purses". That might not be entirely true, but I've had a couple of dates expire on me. And being a liberal non religious person in a conservative state, the available pool of men I want to spend time with is incredibly small.

Do zodiac signs (star signs) have a significant role in your life?

Do you de-clutter or load-shed before a year ends?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
I stayed late at work tonight to make sure all my stuff was up to date, all my emails answered and filed, all my phone calls documented and returned if necessary, all my outgoing payments released, all my documentation for the day done and everything spiffy. If I die this weekend my coworkers won't find a mess, My house on the other hand needs several days of work, and that is likely going to wait until I retire or move, and the retirement better happen first.
What was the first religion and when was it first followed or worshipped?

are you afraid of death?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
I'm not afraid of death, I am concerned about pain and suffering. If I can go cleanly and quickly that would be my preference. My mom died when I was 14, she was 45. Yeah, it used to be comforting to think she was looking down on us, and I'm sure she wasn't happy about the step bitch my dad married. And when I lost a baby it was comforting to think that mom was there to welcome her to heaven. The reality is, heaven is a fairy tale.

Do you feel 'stuck' in your job?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 29, 2017:
For those of you who hate your jobs or the company drama, I recommend a website called Askamanager.com She is an HR person who has a well written blog and posts many times a day. Great read, and great information. She tells you how to job search, how to write your resume and cover letter. Office politics, gossip, culture, and so much more. People write in with questions and she answers them, and readers can comment. Wonderful supportive community. And if you think your workplace is messed up, she can show some that are worse. Even if you like where you are, Askamanager is still a good read. I check it out at least twice a day, and usually before i head over here.
How Many Years or months have you been a Non Believer.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
I tried to be a good christian wife and mother, and when the marriage broke up tried to keep connected to the church. The church has no use for single mature women. Then all those little questions got louder. And god wasn't in any kind of hurry to help out when I was in a bind. Then I watched Zeitgeist, and read, and read, and read, and enlightenment dawned.

Ages ago I read a great book called "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin DeBecker. Great book about listening to that still small voice inside you to keep you out of a world of deep kimchee. DeBecker is a specialist is security for public figures. It isn't a psychic power, it is your brain seeing things you're not immediately aware of. Wonderful book. I strongly suggested my girls read it before they headed off to college. Every woman should read it IMHO. (or not especially humble)

Do you feel 'stuck' in your job?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
I am not stuck in my job, I'm struggling to hold on to it. I'm not terribly fast nor a fast learner. However I have some skills they really desire and what I do usually passes all the QA thresholds, so they are working with me. I like the corporate culture and I'm going to stick with it as long as they will keep me. But as soon as I get to a point where I think I can retire, I'm done. I talk to stressed out people who have had close encounters with the medical field and I am the contact to the money. I am a claims examiner for short term disability claims.
For me the journey has been, for short, like this.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
I'm not going to mess with someone doing good, for whatever reason that motivates them. That would be counter to the result I want which is to have good done. If they want to know why I do good I will tell them why I do good, which is because I'm not an a*****e. I don't need god to be good, but if they do that's their problem.

My dad told me I shouldn't go to college, and he wasn't going to help pay for it. OK, it was late 70s and my dad was not the brightest of the bunch. So I joined the Army and got the hell out of that small town. After I was in a few years I married another soldier and became chief logistics officer for the family. When I realized I needed to end that marriage I got an Associate's degree in HIM, and was prepared to enter the workforce and the economy tanked. Yeah, life did not work out how I planned, but I became adept at surviving.

Nope, no moving. I've moved 23 times in my life. I've been in Omaha now for 13 years, My kids are all in long term relationships and have jobs and are within 15 miles. I have one grandchild and one on the way. My kids rarely saw grandparents or other family growing up. Their dad, my ex was in the military, and post military did not manage to relocate near family until our move to Omaha. I will not willingly move away, and the logistics of long distance relationships is a burden. Tried it once, got burned bad. So no long distance for me.
What would it be like to be married to you?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 28, 2017:
1. I need a certain amount of alone time, depends on the day I have had or the project that has my attention. 2. I rarely watch TV. 3. The cat IS a person. She is my baby 4. I think I snore, I'm not sure because no one has complained of my snoring in a very long time, but then I've slept alone for a very long time. 5. Respect my kids. 6. There is a radio on somewhere in the house at all times. I have tinnitus, I keep the radio on to mask the ear noise. Sometimes it doesn't work. And frequently more than one radio. 7. No TV in the bedroom and I sleep with white noise and the ceiling fan on. Well, try to sleep. 8. I read lots of books, and sometimes stay up too late reading books. I read in bed. 9. I have very relaxed housekeeping standards. 10. I will never marry again, it would mess things up financially. However I am open to a very long term shack up. Why marry? 11. Don't leave the lid up.

Sooo scripture tells us we are all god's creation and he loves each and every one of us. so how would he find his creation not worthy of him? And if he made you why didn't he endow you with faith in him? And if god is real he is a misogynist, and a truly mean SOB. Visit a children's cancer ward and tell me god loves them.... Anyone who allows small children to suffer is not someone I want in my life. Starving children, children who live in war torn regions, children with diseases why would anyone allow that? If god is all powerful how does evil exist?
Can you be agnostic and still think evil exists?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:

How important is romance in a relationship?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I think it depends on what you're looking for. It you want to live like roommates then romance is not needed. If you want a deeper relationship then you need romance or something like it. How to maintain, every individual is different. For me, doing stuff together helps build the relationship, but it depends on the stuff.

Out of curiosity, how many people here are old fashioned?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I spent 25+ years as a stay at home mom. We also moved frequently (ex was military, and I was when we married.) I did not have skills for a good job, so staying home with the kids was a good choice for us. I should have started taking college courses when we finally had the stability of a metropolitan area and children in school, however I put it off. I hit the point where I knew the marriage had to end and I had to be ready so I got an Associate's degree. I wish I had gone further, but hindsight is 20/20. My girls (I don't have sons) were encouraged to get their degree and get a job as in this day and age it is hard to have a one income family. I think each couple needs to make that decision, and child care is frightfully expensive. And there is nothing wrong with a stay at home dad.
Opinions wanted: my now ex has suddenly converted to Christianity??
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 27, 2017:
I assume your BF is about the same age as you are. You're very young all things considered and I gotta tell you there are lots more good men out there. At 20 you're still figuring stuff out, science will tell you your brain isn't fully mature for about 5 more years. You will be a different person at 25 then you are now. I don't think it is unfair for him to break up with you, people move on all the time. Seriously why would you want to hang on to someone who doesn't fit anymore. Give yourself some time to get to know who you are. Become the best you. You don't need a man to complete you. Enjoy your singleness and take time to find the right fit. There are worse things than being alone, like being in an unhappy relationship. Nurture you, What have you wanted to do that he didn't want to do? Do that now.
Do we have a purpose in life?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
My purpose was to raise three amazing daughters to adulthood. As long as they need me I will be happy to stick around. I grew up without a mom after age 14, I would not wish that on anyone. My girls still need me, as does the first grandchild, and a second en route. And just making it from one day to the next is purpose enough.

HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
Are you willing to live with the consequences of your actions? If you tell your Mama what is that going to do to her? If you continue living a lie what is that going to do to you? Mama might be OK with it because she loves you, but then again... If you have to give up scouting what will it do to you? If you continue to lead the scouts while not believing what will that do to you? If you come out what will that do to your position in the community? Tough position, good luck with figuring it out.
If you are not a Christian, is it alright to go to church?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 26, 2017:
Why shouldn't I go to church? As long as I am respectful of others it might be entertaining, or the music might be good. Last time I went to church was my daughter's wedding. I even read scripture without being stuck by lightening. The next time I go to church will likely be the grandbaby's baptism but I get the feeling my daughter isn't rushing that. I'm not going to make an effort to go to church, but if the kids request then I will be there. I've sat through movies I couldn't wait to get out of, I can handle a church service.

I am NOT the life of the party any more.

MERRY CHRISTMAS. Christ Mass?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 25, 2017:
Google can be dangerous. From the last trumpet ministries: The World Book Encyclopedia defines "Christmas" as follows: "The word Christmas comes from "Cristes Maesse", an early English phrase that means "Mass of Christ." (1) It is interesting to note that the word "Mass", as used by the Roman Catholics, has traditionally been rejected by the so-called Protestants, such as Lutherans, Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals and so on. The word "Mass" is strictly a Catholic word and thus, so is "Christ-Mass." the word "Mass" in religious usage means a "death sacrifice." The impact of this fact is horrifying and shocking; for when the millions of people are saying, "Merry Christmas", they are literally saying "Merry death of Christ!" There is so much more following and makes me glad to be out of that culture.
Here's the story.

Can an atheist be a racist? What are your views on racism?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 25, 2017:
Of course. Atheism and racism are separate issues. Being an atheist I don't believe in God. Being a racist is behaving in a manner that says to you people with skin color or ethnicity unlike your own are not equal to you and sub human. To me racism is the ultimate ignorance, whereas to be atheist is a measure of intelligence.
I'm an Atheist, but being here alone tonight, my loved ones dead or very far away really sucks.

Same as movies. I don't read the local newspaper as it is a conservative rag. I also read lots of books. I dated a guy once who told me he hadn't read a book since high school. That relationship did not last long. And then there is the whole not christian thing. I am also a quasi vegetarian, usually don't eat meat, I grow some of my own vegetables, I recycle food scraps with a compost bin and a worm box in my pantry. I don't use chemical concoctions to clean my self or my house, I make my own soaps and cleaners, and lip balms. And now I realize why I will be single for the rest of my life.

OMG did that bring back a bad memory. Back story my mom died in 1972, my dad remarried 6 months later. I was 4th of six children, oldest at home, I had two younger sisters, and we had moved to Lincoln, NE so this must have been about 1976. Stepwitch never had kids and was not religious. She told me when you're dead just just rot, no heaven or hell. I was nominally religious and mostly ignored her. BG Crusade is on TV and she is into it!! She is weeping, and singing with them and hanging on every word, and talking about being saved. I OTOH disliked the BGCrusade, too showy, too over the top. Less than 48 hours later she reverted to the former evil stepwitch, until the next televangelist crusade and then repeat. I am so glad her genes did not get directly spread out into the world. She has been gone for several years now, after my dad died I made no attempt to keep in touch with her.
I posted this on Facebook and nobody had anything to say. Hahahsha!!!

What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 24, 2017:
Judge me or fire me? I work in disability claims and sometimes I want to ask "what in the H**L were you thinking? Other than keeping my job I don't give a dang what people are thinking. If someone doesn't like me, oh well. My well of give a darn has run dry.
Why should we have children ?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 24, 2017:
Well, my parents had children and though it is kind of a mixed bag of results, I'm here and I think I'm pretty cool. I don't regret having my kids, and I gotta tell you grandchildren are amazing. I do worry about the future for that generation, but I think she may part of the tide of change. Some of my children are actively working to make a change in the world. Besides, if I hadn't brought my children into this world there would be no one to help me out in my old age (ya'know, like 15 or 30 years in the future). I already see them helping out their dad.
Who else is having a white Christmas?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 24, 2017:
Omaha got snow mid to late afternoon on Thursday, enough to snarl homeward traffic but nothing to get the snowplows out. Then yesterday we got some more snow. Maybe an inch total. It is enough snow to say we have a white Christmas, not so much that we are going to cancel anything.
Why do people here hate Christmas?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I don't hate christmas. I dislike crowds, I dislike the limited repetitive music of the season. I dislike the cold but that will still be around after the holiday. I dislike the crass commercialism. I dislike the prolonged discussion over Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays. I dislike the insistence everyone should be happy. This is a tough season for many people. I dislike the hypocrisy of people "getting religion" for the season and then getting over it after the holiday is gone. I like the getting together with family for an incredible meal, and the gift exchange is nice. And this year is my precious grandbaby's first birthday, so what is not to like.
I like this one so much better!!

Am I the only person on the planet who has to work today?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I not only worked, I put in some overtime.
The first half of my life was made awesome by my parents.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I have three adult daughters. They did grow up going to church, dad is a conservative christian. Two have outwardly rejected the church, one goes to church to make daddy happy.
Catholic Bishops Urge Parents To Reject Transgender Children
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
How anyone can urge someone to reject their child just blows me away. My kids are my soul, my life, be they gay or straight, or other, or not. This is why I am not catholic. So much for the catholic church being "christian".
If you had to name the current chapter of your life, what would you call it?

Really, When Do We Get This S**t Figured Out.
A friend of mine just got a new kitten.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I cannot imagine a kitten that just sits there and doesn't do anything. Kittens are hell with claws, so prayer is probably a good name. They create havoc, they test limits, they shred curtains, destroy plants and dreams, they disrupt plans, and when they're asleep they're cuter than all get out.
I hate wrapping presents
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I used to do the wrapping thing, and I'd try to get creative with the bows and ribbons. But when the wrapping was just ripped off and discarded in half a second I started to wonder what possessed me to spend so much effort for no appreciation. Now I almost always use gift bags, saves time, effort, and frustration.
This Christmas Eve I plan to be visited by three spirits: Vodka, Bourbon, and Gin.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 22, 2017:
I am likely going to bed with a good book, sleep is often elusive so there is wine, or benadryl, or tea, or other stuff to help me sleep. I will hope the book will be sufficient.
Rapture by 2018?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 21, 2017:
Scripture says you won't be able to figure out when the rapture will be, so all the prophesies about the rapture are false according to scripture. And since there is no god to rapture anything... Sometimes I just shake my head and sometimes....
Hello everyone, I'm new here, just want to ask if you think religion will die off in the next 100 ...
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 21, 2017:
Mine was a slide from well educated active lay person to less active, to angry at the church to doubter, to open agnostic, to atheist. My kids grew up going to church and two out of three are atheists and one likes to make conservative christian daddy happy. I think religion is dying out. Too many people the age of my kids aren't buying the bs any longer. Mega churches have gotten too greedy. College was the turning point for them.

LOL!!! Love the cats, mine looks much like those. But she's not completely useless, she makes me laugh. Thoughts and prayers however make me wanna hurl.
I'm new and don't quite know how to work this thing.
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 21, 2017:
Welcome fellow Nebraskan!! It is tough to be agnostic/atheist in this conservative state.
For those of us who are single, do you enjoy your singleness?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 21, 2017:
I think I am "resigned" to being single. I would like a companion at times, someone to hang with and help with living expenses, and the physical aspects. However, I like my solitary activities as well, I can spend hours daily reading, or sewing, or other stuff that can't be easily shared. I know I'd rather be single and content than yoked and miserable.

Should religion be taught in schools?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 20, 2017:
All religions should be taught as part of cultural awareness and social sciences. Compare and contrast all religions, this is stuff all people should know.
If you could travel anywhere in the world right this second, where would you go?
HippieChick58 comments on Dec 20, 2017:
I want to go back to Great Britain, and Germany. I want to go to Africa, and Australia. I want to see the few parts of the US that I haven't seen before. I want to go to Greece, and Spain, and Russia, and China, and India. Give me a ticket, I will go anywhere.
