I spent 18 months in Okinawa 1977 to 1979 when I was fresh outta HS and newly in the Army. Even then the relations between the American Forces and the local nationals tended to be strained. Yes, GIs mistreating the local women, and the America spouse that had a MVA that killed a child did not help either. The native people of Okinawa are not true Japanese and the Japanese mistreated them horribly during WWII. Going to Okinawa at age 18 was an awakening experience for me, small town girl from the Great Plains.

IMHO, hospitals are over inflating the numbers. If they show it as a COVID death, they can get extra money from the government. So, they pressure these doctors to say that its COVID related death based on a pre existing condition.
HippieChick58 replies on Jul 13, 2020:
Sorry, you're misinformed. Unless doctors are misreporting which can get their licenses pulled, they have to enter the correct diagnosis. The coder who fills the information in will follow up with the doctor if there are any questions. The hospital has to be able to bill the insurance companies correctly. This all goes into a national data base reported to the CDC amongst other places. The patients get billed based on treatments and diagnosis, and yes, they often read their bills. Then they call the billing office and tell customer service that "hey, this was not the correct diagnosis," and then the coder is notified to check with the doctor and the records get corrected and CDC is notified. All sorts of reports go out from hospitals. Over inflating the numbers JUST DOES NOT HAPPEN. Aside from the fines that can be and are levied against the hospitals, doctors, and staff, there are so many hands on those reports checking for accuracy, no false information does not go out. And if the staff knows that false information is going out they can blow that damn whistle and make some money. I worked in hospital billing, it is complex, time consuming, and heavily scrutinized.

HippieChick58 replies on Jul 8, 2020:
New York (CNN)This could be the year Black Friday finally unravels. For decades, the day after Thanksgiving has attracted massive crowds and hysteria outside of malls and stores nationwide. Thousands of shoppers gather sometimes as early as 5 pm Thanksgiving Day itself, jostling for the mad dash into their favorite shops to grab Black Friday doorbuster deals on flatscreen TVs, diamond necklaces, holiday toys, winter coats and more. Now imagine this scenario in a pandemic. "I just can't envision that happening this year," said Scott Rankin, principal and national consumer and retail strategy leader with KPMG US. "With everything that's going on, there may be no Black Friday at all," said Rankin. "I can't imagine retailers buying inventory to stock up for an event designed to pack hundreds of people into a store. There are so many risks to that." Curbside pickup is great for everyone, but it's a headache for malls The only way Black Friday can be the annual shopping bonanza it has been for decades, he said, is "if by some stroke of luck we have a vaccine and everyone gets it by Black Friday." Even the experts say, however, that a vaccine will take at least 18 months to develop and test. At least one retailer is already thinking ahead to a different Black Friday game plan this year. Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette raised the issue with analysts just last week. "When you look at the stores, I would tell you that [crowds are] a big concern of ours. But when you think about a Black Friday, if you think about the 10 days before Christmas, what does that mean in terms of traffic if people are nervous about gathering with crowds?" At the same time, more consumers have actively embraced online shopping. Noting the trend, Gennette said Macy's is looking to focus on online deals for Black Friday. Macy's (M)is also considering a much earlier start to its Black Friday marketing push, potentially right after Halloween, and plans to adopt one other tactic for the first time during the upcoming holiday shopping season. The pandemic could force retailers to rethink their typical Black Friday strategy of one-day deep deals designed to attract hordes of shoppers into stores. The pandemic could force retailers to rethink their typical Black Friday strategy of one-day deep deals designed to attract hordes of shoppers into stores. "Curbside pickup is going to be a big secret weapon for us. We didn't have it last holiday season," said Gennette. "We think that's going to be huge for this holiday season." Losing its relevance Industry watchers say Black Friday has been losing its relevance with shoppers in recent years. One reason is because retailers started to spread their deals out over many days instead of just one day. And consumers increasingly have turned to the internet to ...

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — With an order from their governor now in effect, everybody in New Mexico has to wear a mask in public. But one pet store worker in Albuquerque said enforcing that order led to him being threatened by a customer with a gun. Cody Westfall said a man who came into the store Thursday was not wearing a mask, but he was wearing a gun on his hip. “I asked ‘do you happen to have a mask on you?’ He said ‘no’ kind of dismissively,” Westfall said. Here’s what he said happened next. “At that point he stopped and kind of turned around to me and asked, you know, ‘are you going to make me wear a mask?’ To which point I mentioned that not only is it a personal preference for our store but as of yesterday it is now government mandated,” Westfall said. Westfall said that's when the man gestured to the gun on his hip. “He looked down and then looked back up and said ‘are you sure you're going to make me wear a mask?’” Westfall said. Westfall said when he mentioned the mask rule again, the man gestured to his gun again and said ‘are you really going to make me wear a mask?’” Westfall said. “When he did it the second time when I mentioned it, I was like oh, this is where I know he's threatening me,” Westfall said. Westfall said the man left the store and that's when he called police. The Albuquerque Police Department report said they identified the man and he lives in Rio Rancho. It goes on to say an off-duty officer from nearby Rio Rancho did make contact with the man, but no report was filed. Rio Rancho police confirmed the officer did not file a report and that it was not uncommon for officers from different departments to make house calls like that. Charges have not been filed in the case. Albuquerque police said their report was forwarded to a specialized unit for further investigation. Westfall said he wants criminal charges filed, not just because he felt threatened, but because he feels people who refuse to wear a mask and take it to that level are a threat to everyone.

Federal judge orders Dakota Access Pipeline shut down | Bakken News | bismarcktribune.com

HippieChick58 replies on Jul 6, 2020:
Probably because it is Bismark, ND and you're overseas. A federal judge has ordered the shutdown of the Dakota Access Pipeline while a lengthy environmental review is conducted of the project opposed by environmentalists and American Indian tribes. The move was requested earlier by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and three other Sioux tribes in the Dakotas who fear environmental harm from the pipeline and sued over the project four years ago. North Dakota officials have said such a move would have “significant disruptive consequences” for the state, whose oil patch has been hit hard in recent months by falling demand for crude amid the coronavirus pandemic. The $3.8 billion pipeline built by developer Energy Transfer has been moving North Dakota oil to a shipping point in Illinois for three years. But U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who is overseeing the lawsuit, in March ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to complete a full Environmental Impact Statement. The question of whether the pipeline would be shut down in the meantime has lingered since. An EIS is a much more stringent review than the Environmental Assessment the Corps completed earlier. Such a study is expected to take 13 months, Boasberg wrote in the ruling he issued Monday. After arguments by both sides and other interested parties, Boasberg revoked a key Corps permit for the pipeline and ordered that "Dakota Access shall shut down the pipeline and empty it of oil by August 5, 2020." The pipeline has been carrying as much as 570,000 barrels of oil out of the Bakken each day -- about 40% of the state's daily production before the pandemic hit. Boasberg acknowledged that his order "will cause significant disruption to DAPL, the North Dakota oil industry, and potentially other states." But he also said "the Corps has not been able to substantiate its decision to publish only an EA and not an EIS." "Given the seriousness of the Corps' ... error, the impossibility of a simple fix, the fact that Dakota Access did assume much of its economic risk knowingly, and the potential harm each day the pipeline operates, the Court is forced to conclude that the flow of oil must cease," Boasberg wrote. The judge in 2017 ordered the Corps to revisit several issues pertaining to the easement it granted the pipeline, but he allowed the pipeline to continue operating. The Corps completed the work in August 2018, leading to more legal wrangling when the tribes maintained the additional study was flawed. The company over the years has maintained that the pipeline is safe, a contention backed by the Corps. The lawsuit has lingered since July 2016. The tribes fear a pipeline spill into the Missouri River -- which the line crosses beneath just to the north of the Standing Rock Reservation --...

This is happening way too often for it to be dismissed lightly, or again. There is a serious dysfunction in our police force that needs to be addressed now. Cops should not need to be militarized.

She thought all good things came from people. She thought our golden was her toy, he wasn't so sure, but he tolerated her. She went blind in old age, but still kept me company all the time.
