@Trajan61 I don't care if you have guns, I just want them licensed, insured, bonded, and locked. I want gun owners to be required to take gun safety courses. And no one needs to own an automatic weapon. Those are true WMDs, no civilian needs one of those. I grew up around guns, my dad was a hunter and reloader. I've shot pistols, rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, and an M16A1 rifle. I had extensive training before I handled some of those. Yes, training was courtesy of Uncle Sam, I was active duty Army.

I had fully intended to ignore President Trump’s latest round of racially charged taunts against an African American elected official, and an African American activist, and an African American journalist and a whole city with a lot of African Americans in it. I had every intention of walking past Trump’s latest outrages and writing about the self-destructive squabbling of the Democratic presidential field, which has chosen to shame Joe Biden for the sin of being an electable, moderate liberal. But I made the mistake of pulling James Cone’s “The Cross and the Lynching Tree” off my shelf — a book designed to shatter convenient complacency. Cone recounts the case of a white mob in Valdosta, Georgia, in 1918, that lynched an innocent man named Haynes Turner. Turner’s enraged wife, Mary, promised justice for the killers. The sheriff responded by arresting her, and then turning her over to the mob, which included women and children. According to one source, Mary Turner was “stripped, hung upside down by the ankles, soaked with gasoline and roasted to death. In the midst of this torment, a white man opened her swollen belly with a hunting knife and her infant fell to the ground and was stomped to death.” God help us. It is hard to write the words. This evil — the evil of white supremacy, resulting in dehumanization, inhumanity and murder — is the worst stain, the greatest crime, of American history. It is the thing that nearly broke the nation. It is the thing that proved generations of Christians to be vicious hypocrites. It is the thing that turned normal people into moral monsters, capable of burning a grieving widow to death and murdering her child. During 300 years of routine horrors — the slave ships, the brandings, the separation of families, the beatings, the lynchings, the constant flood of humiliation, the racist ads for soap and toothpaste, the anti-black riots, the segregation of buses and pools and schools and suburbs, the sundown towns, the kangaroo courts, the police dogs and water cannons, the church bombings, the cruel and petty tyranny of whites, reinforced by the most prominent politicians in the country — during all of this, none of the descendants of Europe were able to stamp this evil out. As James Baldwin said in 1963, “The only people in the country at the moment who believe either in Christianity or in the country are the most despised minority in it.” Racism is the fire that left our country horribly disfigured. It is the beast we try to keep locked in the basement. When the president of the United States plays with that fire or takes that beast out for a walk, it is not just another political event, not just a normal day in campaign 2020. It is a cause for shame. It is the violation of ...

In 1983 I was pregnant. I was SO Excited! I was also 25, and fairly newly married. I had just gotten out of the military and joined my husband who was still active duty. At 4.5 months they did a sonogram, which I did not get the results of for a month. The baby had some anomalies, we were being referred to an Air Force Medical Center that had better ultrasound equipment and high risk maternity care. My husband was put on temporary duty to go with me. There they did more ultrasounds, x rays, genetic testing, everything. We were there for a week. The baby had multiple neural tube defects: spina bifida, anencephaly, and the front line didn't close. The danger was if I continued the pregnancy there was danger of miscarriage due to excess amniotic fluid build up caused by the anencephaly. If I went to term and delivered the baby would be born with brain damage due to the anencephaly and spina bifida. We chose to abort, and due to being so far along I had to deliver. The brain detached during birth. The baby also had cleft lip and cleft palate. The stomach, liver, and other organs were protruding from her body. She had NO hope of normal life. IF we went by your preference I would have been forced to carry to term and may have died. Ya know, I'm glad you weren't consulted. I have three healthy daughter and two grand children. Your opinion is worth exactly and precisely nothing when it comes to a body that isn't yours.
What gives your life meaning? Why keep going? (just curious)

@MoonTigerII I noticed this year that I was not hearing birdsongs. I thought maybe it was the road construction that is going on all around my neighborhood, or just too busy/distracted. I'm not going to qualify for Medicaid for a long time, so I have to pay out of pocket for now. I may be able to get them through the VA, but time is of the essence, so this time I will buy and by the time the VA gets me approved I will need a new pair. I can't do my job (customer service for hospital billing department) since I can't hear everyone clearly on the phone.

I like the smell of vanilla. If I started to list all my kitchen blunders I'd be writing a book. I've had plenty of oopsies that ended up straight into the trash can. I've pretty much slowed down on the amount I cook in recent years, being single and eating very simply does that for you.

HippieChick58 replies on Jul 20, 2019:
@AmiSue My Golden was crate trained, and if we left the house he was often crated. During the day and evening when we were at home the crate was open, he could come and go as he pleased. I did notice when the kids got rambunctious or too noisy, (or I yelled at them) he'd go in his crate. It was his safe place. There was a desk in the kitchen, when we had dinner he'd go in there and wait for food to fall. My dog was my buddy, the son I never gave birth to, and my 4th child.
