What are levels???
IAMGROOT comments on May 26, 2018:
The level program is designed to help you engage. Posting, liking posts and comments and commenting are all rewarded with points. As you level up, your level is displayed on your profile. It's not a big deal. You can go after the points or just ignore that aspect of the site. Totally up to you.
I have to laugh at the absurdity in movies, and TV, where some great catastrophe has been visited on...
IAMGROOT comments on May 26, 2018:
Makes for great entertainment. That is almost exactly what Stephen King did with The Stand. It starts out as (not so) sci-fi, with a man-made superflu virus that escapes containment, spreads throughout the globe, killing most of Humanity. The remaining people (conveniently all located in the US) start having dreams about an old woman or a "Walkin' Dude." This is setting the stage for a good vs evil showdown. It's a great story. They even made it into a TV mini-series. It's not overtly religious, and there is no real religious theme, but it generally follows what you're talking about.

IAMGROOT comments on May 26, 2018:
I'm not going to like your post because being unemployed SUCKS! I do have a couple of comments that I hope you'll find helpful. First, as far as I know, in the good 'ol U S of A, racial discrimination, especially in employment is illegal. If you were actually told to leave the state by a prospective employer because of the color of your skin you may have a case there. I work in state government in California and have a decent job, but I need more money so I just signed up to be a Lyft rideshare driver. The income potential, even P/T is significant. If nothing else, it's something you can do to keep the cash flowing while you search for F/T employment. All you need is a fairly late-model, clean car or SUV. Something to think about. I hope this helps and sorry to hear you are dealing with this frustration on top of just trying to get a job.
Any advice on overcoming the sheer terror of teaching a teenager to drive?
IAMGROOT comments on May 26, 2018:
I just did it myself for my 16YO daughter. This is my second go-round. I have a 25YO son too. With my daughter, our first behind the wheel session was in a confined space, a residential loop. She drove around in one direction for a few laps, then reversed direction. This gave her a feel for the car, and for making turns. You can practice braking and acceleration in that scenario too. If you don't have a loop like that available, find an empty parking lot. When you finally go out on the surface streets, be calm. Your anxiety will not help anything. I coached my kid through every action the first few times. Forecasted every turn, gave running (calm) commentary about her lane position and following distance. I know you'll be scared shitless, but you must present a calm demeanor. I think that helps more than anything else. Your kid is already tense and excited at the prospect of driving. You don't want to make the experience any more tense than it already is. Hope this helps. =]
How old is everyone?
IAMGROOT comments on May 26, 2018:
Hi there! I don't know what the actual average age is. There surely are some 20-somethings, but I've found the majority of folks are more in my range (50+). There are some alt lifestyle groups here too. Root around in the groups and maybe you'll find what you're looking for. Welcome to the site.

Today is National Wine Day If you drink wine, what kind is your favorite?
IAMGROOT comments on May 25, 2018:
In order of preference: Zinfandel Red Blends Pinot Noir Viongnier Dessert wines (Ports or other) More specifically, my favorite wine right now is from a Lodi, CA vintner called Berghold Estates. They have two Zins I love; Crankcase, and Footstomp. I like other Zins too, from other makers that have quite different characteristics. 7 Deadly Zins from Michael & David, another Lodi winery, is very good, and quite affordable.

IAMGROOT comments on May 24, 2018:
I have moonlighted as a mobile DJ in the past. It was more for events (corporate parties, and mostly weddings). For weddings, I often had input from the start on what they wanted, type of music, specific requests. I didn't have to talk much. Of course, there were some emcee duties, but they aren't difficult. It's mostly about the music and customer service. Give the people what they want.

It's actually much worse than you think (their hypocrisy). They whine persecution while making greater and greater inroads into the Federal government (thanks Trump!). They are directly attacking the wall of separation between State and church. It is truly terrifying, in my opinion. You definitely are not the only one who feels this way.

How to spend free time
IAMGROOT comments on May 23, 2018:
For me, soon, it will be driving for Lyft. I needs da money. LOL! More to your question; I recently bought a house (last October), that house has a pool (the place I moved from had an even nicer pool, but I still have a pool). I'm slowly turning my "new" back yard into a Tiki lagoon. A perfect down day for me would be turning on some Hawaiian music, chillin & grillin on the back patio, and relaxing in my pool with friends. (or maybe just that one special friend).

IAMGROOT comments on May 23, 2018:
I Heimliched my daughter in the grocery store when she was round 6 when she started choking on a jellybean or a glob of fruit chew or something. I noticed she was having an issue very quickly and the whole thing was over in seconds, so it never really felt like she was in jeopardy, but I suppose that would count as things could have gone south quickly.
I started watching a new series on Netflix called "OA" it's pretty different but I'm enjoying it
IAMGROOT comments on May 23, 2018:
I haven't seen this show, but just peeked at the Wiki. Some good talent in the cast. Also, the woman starring as the main character also co-created and produced the show. Looks interesting. I see Alice Krige (Borg Queen from Star Trek, First Contact), Jason Isacs (currently on the new Star Trek Discovery series) are also in it, as well as Scott Wilson (Herschel from TWD). Cool! Have you seen Stranger Things? This show is being compared to it.

IAMGROOT comments on May 22, 2018:
Welcome! There are hundreds of groups here now, I believe. That's one way to zero in on topics. There's a butt for every seat, Norm. And there's a show for every taste. I love Somewhere in Time too. Dave was ok as well. I also love good action films. The Die Hard series, especially the first one, are great fun. Not only do you get your explosive fix, there are loads of great one-liners and a deliciously bad, bad guy in Alan Rickman (what a loss). I appreciate great dramas, comedies, Rom-Coms, Sci-Fi/Fantasies. There are good, if not great films to be found in every category, but we all have our personal tastes. =]

IAMGROOT comments on May 21, 2018:
Wow! As others have said, thank you for sharing this very personal part of yourself here. Clearly, you made great efforts and took great risk to exercise your right TO have children and I'm glad it worked out and you have happy (mostly normal), healthy teenagers now. I have an adult "child" and a teenager. My perception of the abortion "issue" is that it is over a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. She should be able to make that choice REGARDLESS of her reason. Maybe, like you, she has potentially life-threatening risk associated with the pregnancy, or maybe she simply feels she's not ready to be a mother. Maybe she just flat doesn't want a child. Maybe it's financial. Whatever the reason, it is HER body, HER choice. For the sake of this discussion, let's assume we are talking about a nonviable fetus. I don't want to have that debate. My point is simply that it's the woman's right to choose, period. Thanks again for sharing.
I'm getting back into a workout routine.
IAMGROOT comments on May 20, 2018:
I find doing the elliptical at a decent resistance setting for 30 minutes combined with a split resistance training routine plus some floor exercises helps me to maintain good muscle mass and keeps me from gaining weight. This is without paying much attention to diet. I would definitely drop pounds on this program by reducing fat/carb intake. I shoot for 4x/week.

IAMGROOT comments on May 20, 2018:
I love Gladiator, and yes, Far and Away too, and I just bought the Mummy series on Blu-Ray. Is the other film you mentioned "Chocolat?" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolat_(2000_film) I've seen that one, but wouldn't place it in my favorites category. To be fair, I should re-watch it just to re-familiarize myself. It's been a long time. I have to admit I find many of the Marvel SH films very re-viewable. Just watched Iron Man III for maybe the 4th time. Avatar is another one I could watch again and again. My kid is a musical theater nut and together we have watched Shrek the Musical (Broadway version) numerous times. She performed in a community theater production of that one. Interesting side note on Gladiataor. I was on a (my first actually) Mediterranean cruise while it was being filmed. One of our stops was the island of Malta, one of the filming locations. At the time, I had no idea this was happening and learned of it long after the film was released.

This is a site filled with nonbelievers. Ain't nobody gonna hate on you here. =] I believe there are numerous followers of Christianity who have drunk the Kool-Aid and are genuinely nice people who try to live their lives following the "peace and love" aspects of the religion, but this is selective hearing, at best, and they are simply sheep. I agree and disagree with your "religions are not all the same" comment. They are, and they aren't. They are the same in the sense that they are all Man-made mechanisms designed to subjugate and control other men (and women to an even larger extent). Anyway, you are among friends here and I know you'll have some interesting and direct discussion.
Politely declining
IAMGROOT comments on May 19, 2018:

IAMGROOT comments on May 19, 2018:
I don't have that tagline in my bio, but I think when people use it they don't mean they don't want to engage or want to be with a completely dispassionate person. I think it means they have had relationships in the past where their partner had numerous issues, perhaps was extremely needy, high-maintenance, or had other negative emotional problems. I agree with your "definition" of drama (through my kids, who are both involved in musical theater, I have been drafted. LOL!). =]

Escaping broken love
IAMGROOT comments on May 18, 2018:
Sounds like you have already made the determination that you need to leave, now comes the hard part of ending the relationship. How? You have the difficult conversation and deal with the emotional fallout it will create. I went through this recently and ended a relationship with someone who I cared for (and still do), but who was going nowhere. Although there was a great deal of physical attraction and our personalities meshed well, we both brought a lot of baggage into the relationship (emotional and otherwise). She was a financial and emotional drain and I finally had to end things. It sucked, but it needed to happen. I hope this helps.
Influential Books - Which book changed your life so completely it altered your path in life?
IAMGROOT comments on May 18, 2018:
Many years ago I purchased something called The Neo-Tech Discovery Manuscript. It has much in common with objectivism and even references Rand, if I recall correctly. That got me interested in her works so I started with Atlas Shrugged and went on to read most of her body of work, both fiction and philosophy. Those materials, combined, helped to change my thinking and to solidify my Atheism as well as my support of Laissez-Faire Capitalism.

IAMGROOT comments on May 16, 2018:
Welcome to the club. LOL!
At what age do you start to feel "old"?
IAMGROOT comments on May 16, 2018:
Age is a relative thing. I think how old you "feel" can be interpreted a number of different ways. Sometimes I feel old when I think about my almost 26YO son, and my 16YO daughter who is now permitted to drive. Sometimes I literally feel old when I experience various aches and pains when I exercise (I work out fairly vigorously and do a combination of cardio and resistance training). I have had "bone spurs" removed from both shoulders now, surgically, in order to continue to exercise at the same level. I'm not a bodybuilder by any stretch, but I'd say I exercise more intensely than most men my age (56). Conversely, I feel young when I compare myself to other people my age, both physically and mentally. Maybe I'm just immature, but I prefer to call it "youthful." LOL! I look and act much younger than other men my age, and even 10 years my junior. So, as I said, it's all relative. =] Oh, and @Sk8rgrl, my daughter is big into musical theater. After each show, her production company has a cast party at a local roller rink. I look forward to this activity a lot and, while I'm not the only parent out there skating, I'm among the oldest, and fastest. LOL!
Any Johnny Cash fans? What’s your favorite song(s)?
IAMGROOT comments on May 15, 2018:
Ok, not a huge fan of the genre, HOWEVER, JC has some cool, and very singable songs. I like to "sing" Karaoke and think I do a decent job with some of his songs, like Folsom Prison Blues and Orange Blossom Special. Enjoyed Joaquin Phoenix in his film as well. =]
