Do you love to hike?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I voted no, that I don't hike, and I pretty much don't. That isn't to say I never have, or that I don't exercise. I have hiked Diamondhead in Hawaii. Not a great challenge, but some fab views when you get to the top. When I was a kid, living in Germany, we used to go on these "Volksmarches." They were fun and you got a souvenir medal at the end signifying the event. Pretty cool. Maybe I just need to meet the right person. Huh? HUH? =]
What is truth?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 5, 2018:
Truth and fact are, in fact different things. Where things get messy is with truth and honesty. It is possible to state out-of-context "truths" in order to manipulate a situation, but fully integrated honesty is truth presented in its full context without deception or "spin."
I just thought I'd introduce myself to the group.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
Welcome to the site/group. Me so jealous! I love HI, and particularly Oahu and the Waikiki area. I'm a total tourist. I'm long overdue for a Teddy's Bigger Burger!
How to respond to a proselytizing sibling?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
This really comes down to you and how well you know your sister. Is your position on religion already known? If so, then she might not be so surprised when you tell her that you respect her right to practice any religion she chooses to believe in, but you feel that imposing her beliefs on others in any way is wrong and that you disagree with what she is doing. You could also set up a Nonbeliever's table near where she is doing her thing and print up a bunch of FFRF handouts. I agree with you that what she's doing is wrong. I hate it when I'm at a mall and see a table with a pious-looking grandma sitting there handing out religious shit (and I do mean shit). Over the holidays, I attended an outdoor Xmas thing (I'm not a believer, but I love all the pretty lights, m'kay?) and there were a few people there standing in front of a large (like 10' tall) white cross, large home-made signs telling people to repent and come to jesus. One of them was shouting through a BULL HORN for crying out loud. I wanted to smack them. Especially bullhorn dude. Anyway, hope this helps.
Delicate Procedure; Un-Brainwash
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
Whew! This is a tough one. Complicated by dad, who is evidently a believer. I have been fortunate in my situation to not have had to have dealt with the type of brainwashing your daughter is being exposed to. She has the misfortune of being the victim of being a good girl and believing in the authority of the adults apointed over her (dad, minister, congregation. All those she interacts with at church). You seem to be the sole voice crying out in challenge to an overwhelming amount of mysticism being almost force-fed to your daughter. I guess the best advice I can give is to try what I have done with my kids. I have told them that they can believe whatever they want to believe, but also to NOT just take people at their word. Do their own independent research and get answers and then make their own decisions about what they want to believe. This might place your daughter into a more questioning mindset and could get her to where she at least takes what she's hearing with a grain of salt. I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this situation and hope this helps.
What is better than sex?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
Not much! LOL! Seriously, sex IS great. It's like pizza. Even shitty pizza is pretty good cuz who doesn't like bread with melted cheese all over it? Amiright? With that said, being in a romantic love relationship with someone you love deeply, passionately, endlessly, and completely upgrades sex to "making love" (as has been mentioned already). That, is da BOMB!
Proof of no god?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
The burden of proof always, always falls with those attempting to prove the existence of something, not the existence of nothing. I believe your logic here is flawed. Also, Atheism is not a religion, nor is it a "belief system." It is merely the LACK OF BELIEF. Atheists simply do not believe in the existence of a mystical supreme being. That is all.
Anyone here read the DUNE series of books by Frank Herbert?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
I read the series some time ago and loved it. I like the film as well.
What’s the longest you’ve ever gone without food?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 4, 2018:
I've fasted briefly for blood labs and other medical procedures, and skipped a meal here and there, but have never had to do without food, nor tried to.

What does it mean to you when a members starts to follow your posts?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 3, 2018:
In my experieince here it has meant they have seen some of my posts or my comments on their posts and found them interesting. This could mean they are merely interested in the social/commenting aspect of the site, or it could mean there might be some actual interst in me. I have had some direct communication with site members here, but no romantic connections have been made...yet.

Does anyone shy away from using a company who promotes religious ideals?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 2, 2018:
Generally speaking I do not support businesses who actively promote their religion in a political way (Prop 8 in CA, etc.). However, I have succumbed to pressure and shopped at Hobby Lobby eith an ex GF a couple of times. More notably, there is a family ice cream parlor operating in this area who have an excellent product, are open late, and there's amost always a line out the door. No one else does what they do, so when this place is suggested in a group setting I'll go there. Otherwise, I'll continue to patronize Baskin Robbins. LOL! On a related note, if I walk into a place of business and they have a cross on the wall or something, but are otherwise just doing business in their business, it only rates an eye-roll. There are plenty of good people out there who happen to be believers, but operate good businesses and are not religious activists.

DON'T BE AN ATH-HOLE.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 2, 2018:
You know, opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one. You are entitled to yours too. I'm sorry you feel this is a hate site, but you couldn't be more wrong. This site advertises itself as a dating site, but that really is more of a secondary function. What it really is is a safe haven for nonbelievers to have conversations with like-minded people. Here they can have those conversations that, if they attempt them with believers, will result in their being attacked. You may be correct in saying many of the people landing here are recently deconverted. If so, they need to vent. They should be able to do so here, among friends. I find most of the folks here to be intelligent and very nice. They have a live-and-let-live attitude and have no problem with believers believing as long as those beliefs don't encroach on them. I happen to agree with this philosophy. Before you condemn this community, perhaps you should dig a little deeper than "top level topics."
How do u handle holidays?
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 2, 2018:
Although both of my parents were raised in different religions, neither of them were practiced in our home when I was growing up. We never attended any church and neither of my parents attempted to provide any spiritual guidance. We celebrated Xmas in the commercial way with a tree, gifts, sometimes we would connect with the larger family (my dad had two brothers and everyone was in the same area) and have a much larger gathering/gift exch. Easter was for hunting for the hidden easter baskets (I have two siblings). After I grew up and had my own family, easter was typically celebrated by going out to brunch (and no, nobody said grace, LOL!).
The Antidote
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 2, 2018:
There is usually a reason for being in a horrible mood. Some problem in your life that you are wrestling with, or an issue you can't resolve. Distracting yourself with various activities (as has been suggested already) is one way to at least temporarily dispel your mood, but resolving the issue(s) is the real fix. IMO
The question we should be asking Christians.
IAMGROOT comments on Apr 2, 2018:
This may be the most profound question ever posed on this site. It requires intense and thorough discussion. LOL!
Any advice on working upper extremities?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 30, 2018:
Hmm, dodgeball to me, while probably requiring some endurance and stamina like B-ball because I imagine you're running around a lot, is not so much a strength sport. I think I would be more focused on throwing technique. Never hurts to build strength, and the things you're doing will help. How long will you have to train?
I have a cousin whom I love dearly.
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 30, 2018:
I'd just tell her you don't think praying will help, but you want to help her in any tangible way you can. Then ask what you can DO for her to help. I hope this helps.
Anyone like Broadway musicals?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 30, 2018:
I do! I've seen South Pacific more than once. My daughter has been doing musical theater for years. She is part of a local youth community theater that puts on truly excellent productions (I know because I help, LOL!). Through her, I have developed a love of stage. The only do Broadway shows. They just wrapped a run of Addams Family. They did Cats several years back. A few more they have done since she started include; Shrek (awesomely good), Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Anything Goes, Seussical the Musical. They've been around for 26 years or so and do two productions a year. If you are in the greater Sacramento area and love musical theater, check out River City Theatre Co (just Google it). The younger kids are doing Lion King next month.
Does anyone else have a problem with the Pledge of Allegiance?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 30, 2018:
Saying the pledge, particularly making it compulsory for children to say it in school, does nothing more than promote nationalism, an inherently unhealthy mindset. It instantly creates a mentality of "us versus them," or "we're better," or "we are the chosen." In children, it conditions them, moving them into this way of thinking with each repetition. Forget "under god." I say get rid of the whole thing.
How many veterans are on here, and if you are a veteran, did you see combat?

Sexual Compatibility
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 29, 2018:
You are saying "sexual compatibility" but you are describing unsatisfactory (to you) performance. If your partner is unable to satisfy you via intercourse, but is willing and able to do so in other ways, wouldn't that work? Maybe a clearer definition of what you feel compatibility is would be helpful. =]

What’s your favorite medium for music? I’m into original vinyls myself
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 29, 2018:
Back in the day, I had a pretty nice turntable and everything was on vinyl. I also transferred many of my albums to cassette tape (ya, I'm that old), and made lots of custom tapes for myself. Now I have stuff I want to keep permanently on CD and use my iPod Nano for playing back, making lists. Same with movies. Everything's on Blu-Ray and I use streaming services. I get the appeal of records tho and know some people who collect and maintain their music that way.
Do you feel increasingly disconnected in this instant connection social media age we now exist in?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 28, 2018:
It depends on how you use it. I maintain personal F2F connections and I use social media (and now this place) to maintain and make new connections. This place has become a real treasure trove of humanity for me. I'm chatting right now with someone I've become acquainted with from this site as I write this comment. If you use social media & electronic communication methods as your sole means of interacting with anyone to the deliberate exclusion of face to face interaction, that could be a problem. The intent is to make folks more, not less connected.

How do you express gratitude for the people, things, and experiences you've had in life?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 28, 2018:
I express that gratitude directly whenever possible, in proportion to the benefit, if that makes sense.
What random act of kindness do you practice regularly?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 28, 2018:
General gentlemanly stuff, like holding doors for people. If I see someone grappling with something who clearly needs a hand, I give it. TBH though, I'm not out there looking for good deeds to do. These are "crimes" of opportunity. =]

If you were a trip advisor for where you live, what would you highlight as the best attractions in ...
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 28, 2018:
If this doesn't have you packing your bags, then I'll quit my job as a trip planner...Wait! Um... I live in the seat of California State Government, Sacramento. While there is plenty to see and do in the greater Sacramento area, I am also: 90 minutes drive from Lake Tahoe (all the natural beauty you could ever ask for, and casinos too!) 2HRs from the SF Bay (which has numerous tourist sites including Fisherman's Wharf, but in the East Bay you can visit Marine World Africa USA <Vallejo>, Disney/Pixar Studios <Emeryville>) 4 hours from Monterey/Carmel/Santa Cruz 7 hours from Southern CA (Disneyland and many other recreational parks and tourism sites, endless beaches) In Sacramento itself, there's the Capitol, also a tourism site. The Crocker Art museum. Old Sacramento. The Sacramento Delta (boating, fishing). Folsom Reservoir (Camping, boating, swimming). Downtown Sacramento has numerous and diverse restaurants, clubs, theaters (as in musical) I am not coming close to doing this justice. There is so much to see and do within reasonable driving distance of where I live it's INSANE. OH, I didn't even mention vineyards.

What's the worst job you've had? Why?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 27, 2018:
A temp/manual labor job I had because I needed something to keep some cash flowing. It was basically moving stuff (debris) from one place to another. Real grunt work. Second worst, another temp job working for a guy who owned a small window washing business. Spider-man I'm not.
Datng site
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I think people who have spent a lot of time on "traditional" dating sites that are really giant compatability filters that have been hijacked by men who are just looking for sex, now have an expectation. This site is different and the people here really engage and talk. Contact is free and open, and encouraged. Members are supportive, nice, intelligent. I have only been here a few weeks and have met some REALLY nice folks. Who knows where it will lead? I'm enjoying the ride.
Do you talk to yourself?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
Ok, funny that you are asking this. I'm recently out of a live-in relationship and am alone in my house for the most part (my daugher is here sometimes), and yes, I sometimes have a running monologue. I'm weird. LOL!

Is the era of men "wooing" or "Pursuing" over?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I voted no way, but I'd say it's a two-way street these days. Ladies pursuing men is no longer frowned upon as it once was (or at least I SERIOUSLY doubt it is in this community).
When looking at posts do you?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
It's a combination for me. Sometimes I'm not clear on the question being asked and reading others' replies helps to clarify it for me. And sometimes I DO look at posts that have been made similarly by others, but if I can respond intelligently, I do. Which leads me lastly to say that I always give a thoughtful response if I can. =]
Dating
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
Don't discount this site. Yes, it acts more like a social platform than a dating site. That's a GOOD thing, IMHO. Here, you dive in, get to know folks from their posts, commenting on, and having yours commented on, and then directly interacting via the messenger here. That's more like how you normally meet someone. Would you like this place if it was just a big filter? Another thing to keep in mind is that this is a pretty new site, but is growing rapidly. Hang in there, make an investment here, of yourself. It should pay dividends. =]
I am curious what some of you think.

How good of a consumer are you?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I watch very little network television and listen to almost no commercial radio programming so I am not so bombarded with product ads. My buying choices are based on needs and wants and the wants are not really influenced by advertising. With that said, I don't have anything against advertising in-general. This part of how business works. Ethical advertising is another discussion.
A fun question for everyone... what is the best way to break the ice here?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I know it feels like a personal rejection, but don't take it personally. I sent some brief "hi" messages to folks when I saw they were nearby and...crickets. I later learned that it took them some time to spot the messages or to even realize there was a messaging feature on the site (they said as much). In the meantime, just participate in the conversations. Comment on posts. As you see interesting responses, or posts from nearby members, "follow" them on the site so you get a ping when they post something. This is all part of getting to know everyone here. As you immerse yourself in the community, people will come to you. Have fun, this is a great place to be!
Is Christianity kind of the same as Capitalism?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
No, not at all. Capitalism at it's core is nothing more than the voluntary exchange of mutually beneficial values between two entities (a buyer and a seller). In the US, much has been made of "income inequality" which implies there is some organized system working to make this happen. The income inequality argument is nothing more than an attempt to usurp (steal) from "the rich" in the name of "wealth redistribution." Think about it. That's my opinion, anyway.
About you?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
Does it matter? Not really, however, I was born in Germany and so have dual citizenship. Something I may need to take advantage of. LOL! =]
What would civilization have looked like if humanimals had not invented religion?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
As others have said here, I believe we would be seeing much more advanced tech/science. People would be able to think more clearly and rationally without the psychological poison of religion. Surely, there will always be good & bad people in the world, but no religion would be a net positive. That goes to a large extent to governments as well.
Are you attracted to people who are just comfortable being themselves from the start?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I feel it's human nature to be on your best behavior when you are getting to know someone. That makes sense to a certain degree. We all do it. For example, if you went on a date with someone, even though you have a mouth like a sailor you wouldn't drop f-bombs every 5 seconds, but once you got to know that person you (and she) would probably relax and you'd learn that she's got potty-mouth skills too. Also, if you date someone longer term and spend lots of time (or move in) together, he or she will eventually discover all of your "bad" habits (not putting the toilet seat down, born slob, other less than desirable habits). That's not to say you couldn't or wouldn't change all of that, or maybe you'd just clean up your act BECAUSE you met someone. That's cool. Hope this helps.
Do you offset a sedentary lifestyle filled with PCs, TVs, and other technological indulgences?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 26, 2018:
I have a desk job, cubicle dweller. Also, due to age, my metabolism ain't what it used to be so I have to keep that engine running. I have a workout routine I have done off and on for many years and it has served me well. My routine includes some floor exercises, 30 minutes of cardio on an elliptical trainer, and some resistance training (weights, cable machine). If I can get in 4X/Wk, I'm good. =]

Are you a romantic?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I guess this can be relative, like many things, but I consider myself somewhat romantic. I'm a gentleman and hold doors for ladies, whether I'm with them or not (men too, for that matter). For my partner, I'm pretty good about recognizing key holidays (V-tines Day, Birthday). For those two mentioned, I shop for greeting cards that I think capture my feelings towards them (usually buy 3 or 4) and hide them around the house in places I know they will find them, like under their pillow, on their nightstand, on the bathroom vanity). I like to order Shari's Berries (if they like that sort of thing), or other treat and have it mailed to wherever they will be on their BD or V-tines day. In the past I have ordered Vermont Teddy Bears (is that still a thing?) in different themes. Is that stuff romantic? =]

Hi All! I am finally on a track to get my first ever tattoo.
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Congrats on taking the plunge. I'm a late bloomer to tats. I have two now, both are pictured in this group (Groot and an elaborate Tiki surrounded by a rainbow, flowers, and above, the cosmos <trippy, right?>. I don't have the issue of having beautiful olive skin and I tan normally, but any colored tat you get will be more difficult to see under a tan, and will become more visible as the tan fades. Not much to be done unless you choose the colors carefully. Your tattoo artist should be able to provide guidance on that. When you're in the chair, relax, drink water, and sit still. LOL!
I have my first, from here, date tonight. Any tips??
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Be yourself, have fun. Dont take it too seriously.
It's Sunday. We're not in church. What did you get to do today?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
So far, had coffee, exercised, did a little work around the house, spent time here on this site.
What do you say?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Ich bin ein Wiesbadener! Guten morgen fellow German! On this topic, I have gotten to where I say nothing at all. I have said Gesundheit in the past, but now I say nothing. I bristle at the expectation that anything at all needs to be said. Maybe I'm just getting cranky in my old age. LOL!
Good morning everyone.
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
My emotions on this topic are clear. They are all negative. This pseudo (and not even that) "science" is complete bullshit. As has been said, mediums speak in generalizations that apply to EVERYONE. In your niece's case, she is being told exactly the comforting words she wants to hear.
Have you dated someone YEARS younger or older?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I just ended a relatively short relationship (about 18 months) with someone 28 years my junior. This was a first for me (being with someone significantly younger). I've been through 2 marriages and both my exes are my age. There was a bit of a difference in maturity, but that wasn't a huge problem. I ended the relationship for a number of reasons I won't go into here. She is very attractive and I have to admit I am/was very flattered to be found attractive by someone so young and beautiful. Could be a bit of mid-life crisis going on there, and maybe still is. I can't say for sure that I'd rule out another relationship with someone much younger.
So what do you do when is time for a group prayer at work or dinner table?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I work in state government so this is not an issue at all. If I happen to be a guest at somone's home and they say grace or whatever prior to a meal, I'm respectful, but don't actively participate. People can believe whatever they want. If you work in the private sector (for a company) and they conduct prayer, that is their right, but, as others have said here, they can't force you to do it.
Have you lost friendship once you declare you are a non-believer? I have, even family members.
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Well, ya gotta have'em to lose'em. LOL! I have a LOT of FB contacts. Some of them are locals who I know or have met F2F. They all know about my non-belief, they are just completely silent when I post FFRF items to my wall. At least they aren't rude. At work, my closest co-workers are all aware and again, they're cool, but mostly silent. There are people who work in my organization that I interact with who don't know and I work for the state so there's no need to stir crap up with activism in an environment that is supposed to be secular. That could change if/when I see some blatant prostletyzing. =]
I am curious as to how all of you with children, or thinking about having kids, feel about teaching ...
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I think you're handling it well. My kids both know what I think (I don't consider Atheism a "belief," but rather absence of it). Along with that, I have always encouraged them to do their own research on the subject of religion, or anything else for that matter, and then making up their own minds. The result is that the apples have not fallen far from the tree. My son (now age 26) is very "live and let live," and at the very least, is highly skeptical of religion. My daughter is my mini-me and has gotten herself into some minor arguments and controversies at school because she's a bit outspoken. (she's a performance artist, what can I say?)
Could you consider someone a real friend, if you've never met them in person?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I think this is absolutely possible. In our electronically connected world, we all have numerous "friends." Most of them, I think, could be classified more accurately as acquaintences, but sometimes you really connect. I have finally had some private conversations with folks here and who knows where that could lead. This site is an extremely fertile "friendship ground," I think. The common mindset helps everyone to relax and really talk to each other. I love this place (and I love your intelligent and thought-provoking posts too, BTW. Thanks!).
Do you have a dating pattern?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I haven't done a lot of conventional dating. I was in a 10 year relationship (5 of which were married), then I met my second wife in an AOL chatroom (before online dating was a "thing"), and that turned into a 20 year relationship. So now I find myself in the dating pool for the first time in a very long time. I am attracted to intelligent women with sarcastic senses of humor. My first wife didn't match that type which has more to do with me than with her. In my 20s, I wasn't thinking. No, really, just not. LOL!
What is the issue with Communism? Why is it such a 'bad guy'?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Communism is the bad guy because it is anti-freedom. It reserves the right of ownership to itself. It owns the fruits of everyone's labor, and all their property. It destroys the natural human desire to produce and feel pride in accomplishment and in earning something for themselves. Capitalism is grossly misrepresented by just about everyone these days. Capitalism is the voluntary exchange of values to mutual benefit. All of the attention being given to "income inequality" is nothing more than an attempt to drive us (as in the US) to socialism and to justify the "redistribution of wealth" (translation = theft). This is patently wrong, IMHO. Are there CEOs out there who do not earn what they make? Yes, and they are the ones who get all of the attention. However, there are many, many more who do, and who are responsible for successfully managing their companies to the benefit of all. They provide affordable products that benefit everyone and jobs. One thing that everyone seems to have lost sight of, or perhaps never understood to begin with is that Capitalism is the engine that has driven the world. It is singlehandedly responsible for raising the standard of living everywhere it is practised. Crony Capitalism is a horrible binding of the government and some businesses (through regulation, favoritism, tax breaks, etc.) that has hurt Capitalism and provided fuel to Socialism (Communism lite, if you will). Very curious to see how my comments will be received here.
What is the most painful thing you’ve endured?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Hmm, physically, it would have to have been when I was involved in a bicycle accident as a child. I went ass over teakettle, got a nasty shiner (but no concussion) and lots of scrapes and bruises from it. I remember having to remain awake for a certain amount of time (late into the evening) out of concern over a concussion and watching The Incredible Mr. Limpett on TV. LOL! Emotionally, two things. The first was having to watch how my daughter looked coming out of what was considered to be fairly serious surgery for someone her age (5). I don't think she was every in any real danger. The surgery was for removal of her tonsils and adenoids, and also widening of her sinus cavities (and I can only imagine how that was actually done). When she came out of the surgery she looked like she had been hit by a bus. Her face looked badly bruised. It just broke my heart to see her like that. Again, it was just my reaction to her shocking appearance. I hate seeing children suffer and seeing her like that, well. The other emotional pain has to do with heartbreak and I can't share it in detail here, but I feel emotional pain from it to this day.
Steroids?

It's a personal choice, period.
Christians argue that the founding fathers had Christ in mind while designing the constitution etc.

Read this lovely essay on the topic on the FFRF site (it earned the writer a $1K prize in a contest): https://ffrf.org/legal/item/19257-america%E2%80%99s-toxic-%E2%80%98christian-nation%E2%80%99-claim
Growing up, & how we often destroy scientists before they start.
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I have no one to blame but myself. I can't say I ever had a dream in terms of "what I want to be." Honestly, I'm 56 and still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up. There are some things I'd like to do in semi-retirement. My parents were indifferent and did not foster/cultivate dreams or imagination nor did they discourage them. So I own my own situation (working a job I don't love, but making ok $$, homeowner, late model car, etc. Not rich or wealthy). What I would say to you is that it's never to late to act on your dreams. Also, applaud you for raising your kids as you have described. I have told my kids (I have two) to find their passion and pursue it. And that the key to at least part of their happiness will be discovering their passion and turning it into a career. =]
Best Dating Site?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Dude, you landed here on this site, which advertises itself as a dating site. How could you leave it out? Online dating has become huge business. I don't think I would use any paid dating site. I love this site because it is filled with like-minded people which eliminates a big faction (the supposed faithful), secondly, it's free, and thirdly, this site merely masquerades as a dating site. It is proving to be more of a social networking platform. This mimicks real life better because you can spend time getting to know someone here first (for free, they don't ration out or filter the contact) in the posts and you can message them (for free, without limits) privately. As has been mentioned, many of these dating sites are linked. That could be advantageous, but they are also riddled with fake profiles and fake people.
What's a thing that you love?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
The list of what I love is long, but something that immediately popped into my head when I started to think on your question (in addition to cuddling, cuz who doesn't love that?) is this: I love eating a big, juicy Teddy's Bigger Burger sitting in my beach chair on Waikiki beach watching the sun set. =]
Have you ever done a good deed and someone assumed it's because you're Christian?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Nope, that hasn't happened to me (not that I haven't been good, LOL!). The pervasive presumption that only X-tians or the religious do good deeds sickens me. The attitude is so ingrained. This is one of the things the FFRF tries to change with their "good without god" billboard campaign.

I have a shirt that says "Science Bitch," from Breaking Bad. That's a bit obnoxious. LOL!
The subtext of texting....
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Texting is fine for quick messages. I find it preferable to a phone call where you just need to impart some info. But it SUCKS for sustained communication, partly because I just can't do it fast with my thumbs. LOL! But beyond that, it's difficult to express emotion and tone and EASY to be misunderstood. This goes for email as well.

Is "God" a bunch of Aliens?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 23, 2018:
Regardless of human myths and superstitions, the likelihood that alien civiliations exist elsewhere in the universe is extremely high and mathmatically probable. That they would be much older and technologically (and biologically) advanced than human civilization is also highly likely. I'd buy that theory in a hot second over any mystical, omnipotent/omniscient "god."
I am excited to find this community after months of attempts at online dating in the “Bible ...

Weekend plans
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 23, 2018:
Theater duty this weekend. My kid is performing in a local youth community theater production of Addams Family so that's where I'll be tomorrow.
Do you give to beggars?
IAMGROOT comments on Mar 23, 2018:
We call them panhandlers in the US. I don't donate because it's impossible to tell those legitimately in need from those who are unwilling to help themselves. I have seen professional panhandling take place where people were dropped off at strategic locations by a large van and placed. Really?
