Born in Wisconsin and raised in Fla. My passion is butterfly gardening. I am also passionate about animal rights, esp concerning game hunting for sport. My hobbies include movies and Karaoke. I recently became atheist around 3 yrs ago. I just realized that any book that cannot be taken literally is a poor source of information. Of course, I am referring to the Bible.

Are there places you can purchase monarchs eggs and raise for release?
Leafhead comments on May 30, 2018:
A better plan would to purchase or collect Milkweed plants or seed and attract your own. You can purchase seeds and plugs thru Monarch Watch and other organizations. Results vary depending upon your surroundings but rule of thumb is the more (Milkweed) the merrier. Areas such as sterile "green deserts", the sprayed, manicured lawn, will not do for butterflies. The first act should be to swear off all pesticides. I like to involve neighbors as well to maximize coverage. If you live near a park or other green space, you will attract butterflies quicker.

Leafhead comments on Jun 13, 2018:
Good for you, and welcome to a wonderful journey thru butterfly gardening :) It's so important for everyone of us to do something for the declining Monarch population. Thank you for your generosity. For those opposed to or repulsed by the looks and behavior of Common Milkweed and some others, there are "face men" like Butterfly Weed and Swamp Milkweed which do not spread underground and are more appealing to the average gardener. Tell a friend. Involve neighbors. Family, too. We have got to go pesticide free and bring back pollinators and other important and remarkable Arthropods.

Leafhead comments on Jun 26, 2018:
Sweet! Thank you for doing your part in providing for the Monarch :) You are also smart to contain your Milkweed in a pot! For a nonaggressive, very attractive and easy to keep Milkweed, try Asclepias tuberosa, the Butterfly Weed. It stays low, about 18", and does NOT travel underground. It has beautiful orange flowers, and also comes in a happy yellow cultivar called "Hello Yellow". Depending on where you are, Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) is another good choice for those seeking Milkweed that is both attractive and well mannered in the garden.
Even though I check milkweed every day for newly hatched caterpillars, these two pictures illustrate...
Leafhead comments on Jun 26, 2018:
I scour my Milkweed on a regular basis, and serendipity in its purest form arrived as 20 members of a garden club came to my garden for a lecture on butterfly gardening and garden tour. Suddenly, as I was beginning the tour, I looked down and there was a big fat #5 on my Swamp Milkweed! Here he is. It could not have been more perfectly time :)

I have Cicada Killer Wasps yearly. They terrify my neighbors. But It is not accurate to call them hornets. Hornets, Yellow jackets and Paper Wasps all belong to one family (Polistes) and are social. Polistes wasps will defend their nests. Cicada Killers are in another family (Crabronidae) and are not social. They do not defend their nests (death chambers), and will just fly away if disturbed. It is fun to watch the males fighting over the females in Summer.

Beautiful snake and a wonderful educational experience. Introducing kids to Nature is always a good idea, especially before fears and deep phobias set in. I am envisioning a similar plan of bringing kids to butterflies. Guided tours of green spaces here in Wisconsin for kids and their families would go a long way in education against pesticides, and providing for the Monarch and other butterflies in the home garden. Pictured are some shots from around my garden and around WI 1. Monarch, my garden 2. Hummingbird Moth, my garden 3. Diana Fritillary, Sandhill Conservancy 4. Eyed Brown, Cherokee Marsh 5. I have raised and released countless Black Swallowtails. I'm still here
Can any of you experts identify this vine for me?
Leafhead comments on Jul 17, 2018:
Bindweed! You'll have to do some extensive weeding to get rid of this menace! Dig up your tomatos, unwind the vines off plants, set aside, and raise hell in that bed!! You will have to get all underground runners. Once all Bindweed has been removed, you can replant your tomatoes.
We got our first bloom on our Strawberry tree. And a beautiful butterfly.

Leafhead comments on Jul 20, 2018:
Cymbalta does indeed dampen the libido in a big way. I am a man who could cum repeatedly and stay hard for hours, until they put me on Cymbalta. It took away 90% of my drive and I could not get or stay very hard. It took a year to kick with horrendous withdrawal, and I'm still not back 100%. And weed is illegal. Fuck that shit
