LenHazell53 comments on Jan 8, 2019:
A major cause of the Dunning-Kreuger effect is instilling in to very young children the idea that they are in some way or another superior. By giving them a false sense of confidence self righteousness and infallibility you create a self justifying idiot who can never know he is an idiot because that in itself is, to him, a stupid idea. Either by religion, ethnicity, religion the child is made to think they are privileged and must never let anyone tell them they are wrong, especially if that person is "other". For example my father would never accept that he was wrong about anything if my mother corrected him, it was simply impossible that a woman, by virtue of being a woman, could possibly know better than him. Even if I or my brother backed up my mother as being correct, then he would say that proved his point as the woman was only parroting other men and did not understand what she was saying herself. In the USA children are raised to believe themselves privileged to be citizens of the greatest country on earth, to be "white" American is both to be a member of the greatest nationality AND the superior race. TO be White American and MALE is to be unassailable regardless of any other factor such as education. When Trump came along and showed himself as a White American Male who agreed with these self deluded idiots and justified their belief in their own false self confidence it simply reinforced what they "know" to be true and provided a totem to rally to.

The Latin word for right is dexter and for left, sinister.
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 7, 2019:
It comes from linguistic confusion in religious circles The idea that those who oppose god "walk not the path of righteousness", Deliberately confused right meaning correct and right the directional indicative Therefore those not following the "right" path follow the "left hand path", the "Sinister" path, so sinister came to be synonymous with evil. Even today many mystics of various factions still identify one another as travelers on the left hand path.

Kubrick's The Shining Recently there was a post asking people to name their favorite movie...
LenHazell53 comments on Jan 7, 2019:
The Shining is the Islam or Christianity of Movies, in that those who are willing to defend it are willing to tie themselves in to mental gymnastic knots and say openly stupid things in in order to defend it. I was in the day a huge Stephen King fan and saw the Shining the first performance of the first day in my home town. The cinema was packed and we waited with baited breath. Then it started. We were treated to a glorious cinematic overhead shot of the Torrance car heading to the over look as the shadow of the Helicopter filming them drifts in to sight. That is when the sniggers started. By the the end of the film most of the audience left wiping tears from their eyes and declaring that not billing it as a comedy was a stroke of genius. Then as months passed many of my circle of friends began to hear rumours of this minor piece being hailed as a work of actual cinema genius. I seriously wondered if they were talking about the same film, the one with the kid croaking at his finger, the one with Shelly Duvall mugging at the camera and Jack Nicholson turning out his most over the top ham sandwich of a performance since "The Raven". But No it was the same film and then the art centre corner bar critics began trying to explain WHY it was not only a really good film, but a Great film. Within ten years the ridicule and mockery that greeted it's initial release had been over taken by the propaganda. I am afraid no matter how blasphemous it may seem, I will stick by my original assessment that Kubrick's the Shining is terrible, it verges on so bad it is good, but is not self aware enough to merit that mitigation. Try this experiment... sit and watch the film with someone who has never even heard of it is not a Kubrick fan. Tell them nothing, put it on and watch the cloud of incredulity slide over their face and see it give way to either a plea to turn the crap off, or to near hysterical laughter.

Language changes over time.
LenHazell53 comments on Dec 29, 2018:
No you are not getting old, people are getting lazier and dumber. Simply claiming language changes does not explain anything, it is an excuse to tolerate bad education and bone idleness. Language is like a muscle it either evolves with use or degrades in indolence. The evolution of language allows for more precision and accuracy a greater comprehensibility and universality where even if the word is unknown to one or the other conversationalists it's meaning can be implied and/or inferred based on root etymology common to all speakers. The degradation, the degeneration of language is the loss of coherence in favour of fainéant, usually monosyllabic grudging, simple animalistic sounds that can and do convey a multitude of meaning reliant purely on context and a common frame of reference unique to the concomitant interlocutors, while being utterly incomprehensible to anyone else, words in such cases loose all etymological and lexicographical roots, defy analysis and often have no basis other than onomatopoeia or emotional resonance.

It is of course possible to write and produce a good Holmes comedy, as exemplified by **Without a Clue 1988** & **The Private life of Sherlock Holmes 1970** For example However it is necessary in order to do this to ***start ***with a good Sherlock Holmes story. This is the Key Holmes first Story first, and *then* add the right humour. Beginning with the idea that you are going to find a home for a bunch of old routines and crap old jokes and then decide you are going to piss take a beloved institution for that purpose, will never work, because it will not be Holmes, or even a parody or Pastiche of Holmes it will be a clown in a deerstalker at best.

This is common place, even when I was a TBM here was a small and very vocal minority speaking out against such things. But bringing the church in to disrepute by telling the truth about it has always been an excommunicatable offense. In recent years many items of church history have been admitted as being true, leaving hundreds to wonder why they were excommunicated for pointing out these exact same things years before. The church is on it's last legs, and while being still VERY rich, the "active" membership has been steadily declining everywhere except in third world African countries and having spent some time speaking to a Somali missionary in my home town, the church they know is not the church I was a part of. When I asked him about the banning of blacks from the priesthood until 1978 he had no idea what I was talking about and his seething red faced Utah born companion rushed him away insisting he had never heard about it either.

No western, despite it's many faults, has ever moved me like "High Noon" Franky Lanes performance of the theme tune is quintessentially what the western themes evolved from, so much so he was brought back years later to do the theme for Blazing Saddles a parody theme that none the less ranks up there with the greatest cowboy themes ever.
Being neither a neurologist or a philosopher, I don't write this with any authority but will make it...

What religious people call a soul is a desperate personification of self that is separate from the physical born of a desperate fear of death and reality. What musicians call soul is the powerful essence of passion able to be written or played in to and derived from truly emotional music and musical performance. The former is a delusion, the latter is real.
If a cowboy is happy ??
