WHY DOES THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAVE SO MANY SILENT LETTERS?
LenHazell53 comments on Mar 15, 2023:
In some cases the silencing of a letter has come about through dialect or just plane laziness. Often it came from the fact that when Caxton invent the printing press he chose only to use the 26 most common letters, and substituted the others with combinations or alternatives from those 26. As it stems from the fact that Englished used to have many more letters and accents that have for one reason or another have been lost. The letter Thorn for example was done away with in favour of the digraph Th, and mistakenly substituted by the printed letter Y, leading to þe being pronounced both Ye and Thee þou being pronounced both You and Thou. The silent K on English cords was originally the Runic letter Kenaz (or Kaun in Viking Runes) ᚲ pronounced by the obsolete digraph cn and again was mistakenly substituted by the printed letters kn In time the sound softened to a hard N, so that words such as Knight and night became phononyms, with one sole exception in English that being the regal Name Cnute (the monarch who died ordering back the sea).

Would anyone mind telling me what they think "flewster" or "fluster" means ?
LenHazell53 comments on Mar 12, 2023:
Fluster from the Viking flaustr meaning to bustle or to agitate, by the 16th century it had evolved to mean "to flurry or confuse" Flewster is an now almost extinct English surname, derived from the combination of two names (originally hyphenated) Flew and Stern, Flew-Stern. Flew being an occupational name for a sea fisherman and Stern meaning strict or professional. Therefore Flewster which can be traced back to the 14th or 15th century means a professional Fisherman or the captain of a fishing boat. McFluwster, is therefore probably a regional dialectic variation?

LenHazell53 comments on Mar 11, 2023:
There has always been a LOT of contention over the similarity between "Be a Clown" by Cole Porter for the 1948 and "Make 'Em Laugh" 1952 Written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown who claim they wrote the song first but published it later (It is worth noting that Arthur Freed produced "The Pirate") Cole Porter claimed to have never heard the latter song until many years later Compare them and make up your own mind Possibly Gene Kelly might have known since he was in both films, but he is long since gone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbSz9sS6HtY
I want to see him indicted, tried and convicted.
LenHazell53 comments on Mar 11, 2023:
This is the natural evolution of what began with the movement that claimed "Feelings over Facts" was a legitimate standpoint. Once that wedge was firmly entrenched it took only a few tap of the metaphorical hammer to split open society and allow credence to th idea that the feelings of lunatics and dangerous insurgents are more important than the rule of law and convenient and comforting lies are a not only a social necessity but are in fact preferable to inconvenient and undesirable truths. If Trumpty gets away with this then it sets a terrible precedent in law that punishing the popular guilty is an infringement of civil and human rights not only those of the perpetrator, but those of the people who want to believe that their feeling being hurt by the removal of a criminal from society "trumps" the rules of law, common sense and moral decency.

Her career was ruined when it was revealed that her January 1970 playboy centerfold shoot was actually taken "at some point" before her 18th birthday when she was still a high school student and was either 16 or 17 years old. The photo sets were deliberately held back by the photographer and Playboy ,magazine until she turned 18 in October 1969, under US and UK law at the time making the photo set illegal, after it was legally decided it did not matter how old she was when the pictures were published, if she was under age when they were taken. It was also revealed that she was Jewish, causing her to be shunned by her local community, leading to her conversion to Christianity against her parents wishes causing another scandal. She never worked as a model again Today she is in her seventies lives in Oregon and cleans houses for a living. She has two sons and three grandchildren.

Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland - 1970's
LenHazell53 comments on Mar 6, 2023:
Jill Ireland was previously married to Man from Uncle Star David McCallum At the rap party for "The Great escape" in 1963, the then also married Charles Bronson approached the couple and told McCallum that Ireland was to good for him and that he was going to marry her. Five years later he did exactly that, there is some dispute as to whether there had been an ongoing affair, but David and Jill divorced in 1967, as did Bronson and his wife Harriet Tendler and Bronson immediately Married Jill in early 1968. However divorce in the UK during the sixties usually took at least two years of actual separation, and five years if a guilty party could not be established and was contested in court. Divorce in the USA was a much easier matter. Further Jill Ireland and David McCallum had been married in England in 1957 at the Islington Registry in London, so a divorce in the USA would not have been recognised under English law either for Ireland or Bronson, hence her moving back to the USA immediately before her second marriage. Also all three actors were Roman Catholic and so would have had to gain a religious annulment of their fist marriages in order for the second one to take place in the eyes of the church Sadly Jill Ireland died in 1990 of breast cancer. She does however hold the distinction of being one of only two on screen mutual love interest of Carry on Star Kenneth Williams. This being in Carry on Nurse 1959 with Jill as Jill the bookish sister of Williams' college room mate who he successfully woos from his hospital bed. (the other was Elke Sommer in Carry on Behind 1975 some 16 years later as the sexually voracious Professor Anna Vooshka)

Pluvial adjective Of or relating to rain, especially much rain; rainy.

LenHazell53 comments on Mar 3, 2023:
Mark Twain credited Benjamin Disraeli with having originated this maxim, but it actually goes back much further in the variation taught in law schools from time immemorial There are three kinds of witness "simple liars, damned liars and experts" The second variation is that three types of person who will always lie in court "Witnesses, lawyers and experts" Since Disraeli was a lawyer and an expert on political science, this gives some credence to Twain's accreditation.

I think the trend to control speech - and therefore thought - continues.
LenHazell53 comments on Mar 2, 2023:
The problem with debating free speech is that both sides think free speech is great for them, but that the other side cannot be trusted with it, being as they are too immoral, immature and naive to know when not to give voice to the unacceptable. It inevitably comes down to two factions both screaming "I find that offensive" at one another, then boycotting one another, then shouting to anyone who will listen "they are trying to silence me, so we should kill them before they kill us! Then we can reinstate free speech... for us"

LenHazell53 comments on Feb 22, 2023:
Not True, the last time the UK was invaded was during the 1812 US/UK war when an American warship blown off course landed on the West Coast of England in the fishing town of Whitehaven. 30 members of the crew including Captain John Jones rowed ashore and invaded the town, leaving only one officer and two seamen on board as caretakers. The astonished Locals offered the invaders Ale and dinner at the local Tavern and gave them directions to the home of the local Lord of the manor Lord Selkirk, who Jones decided to kidnap for ransom. Unfortunately Lord Selkirk was not at home and his butler gave them his apologies. Determined to not have the raid be a total waste, the captain demanded his Lordships silver as booty, and was presented with the only silver in the house, a Georgian silver Tea service, which they took away with them back to their ship after obtaining a sworn statement from the Butler that this tea pot etc was indeed spoils of war. The invaders sailed home and announced their Victory to much derision and incredulity and a refusal to accept that the ship had not simply just got lost. Years later Captain Jones wrote a contrite apology to Lord Selkirk and enclosed his tea service along with a latter asking that Lord Selkirk be so kind as to write back confirming to the American Admiralty that he had indeed invaded Great Britain. His Lordship obliged and along with thanks for the returned booty enclosed a copy of The Cumberland Chronicle and Whitehaven Public Advertiser,, which detailed the not only that the Americans had invaded, but also told the story of how while Capt. Jones had been at the home of Lord Selkirk a local drunken devision of the Merchant Marines had tried to sink the alien vessel, by attacking it with home made incendiary bombs, most of which had missed. One bomb did actually make its mark, but was extinguished by the local fire brigade who admonished the marines for endangering the local fish fleet. Jones had been completely unaware of the counter attack and so pardoned his midshipman who he had blamed for scorching the deck by clumsiness with lamp oil, when the the unfortunately officer had simply slept through the whole fiasco.

Zelensky like all actors and performers is fame hungry, when he was used as a puppet by ogliarch to become Leader he was more than happy to do it, when he was used as a puppet by right wing fanatics to legitimize their dubious endevours, he loved it. When he was puppeteered in to hitting the world wide stage as the blackmail victim of the evil Trump he hit the jackpot. So when Trump's successor (and father of his business acquaintance) assures him that Putin saber ratting on the Ukrainian boarder is not bad thing for either of them Big Z lapped it up. Time of war is no time to change leaders, so long as Prez Putrid is being an international terrorist Zelensky is in no danger of being ousted from the top seat and gets to play Ukrainian Churchill. Of Course when the cossack hoards actually crossed the boarder and marched in to Ukraine, Zelensky's public image, which up to that point had been spurious at best, suddenly rocketed to the lovable international underdog, the brave little David standing up to the Big bad bald Goliath of Russia, all is forgiven all is forgotten and so long as Z goes on his international personal appearance tour, aid pours in to Ukraine in the form of weapons, support and hard cash from ALL OVER THE WORLD, and all Zelensky has to do is keep smiling, keep being humbly appreciative, and keep out of the way of Russian missiles. NATO gets to fight Russia by proxy, the arms manufacturers coin it in, and gratefully donate to the political parties their cut of the lollipop time, NATO and the EU get new member, wiling to pay for the protection that brings and the news media has another bumper pay day. Just a bit of Trivia Arthur, changed his name from Adolf in 1911 after WWII he made the change official, it was he who originated the the Groucho character in the stage act, but preferred the Harpo character and so asked his younger brother Julius to take over playing Groucho so he could concentrate on the musical side of the act along with Leonard AKA Chico the eldest brother a talented pianist. The other two brothers known as Zeppo and Gummo (Milton and Herbert respectively) both left show business and went in to business Gummo as an agent and Zeppo as an engineer

THis used to happen a lot to the Angel Moroni Statues (I Moron as I like to call them) blowing his horn, plonked on the top of every Mormon church, until it became a joke that obviously god was smiting the Mormon religion because it was a pile of horse shit, at which point the first presidency ordered them all taken down, claiming it was nothing to do with god, that it was simple physics and a that the metal statues were a fire hazard. Oddly god chose not to tell the divinely inspired prophet of the LDS about lightening rods I wonder why not?

Merit, talent, competence and capability should be the only criteria by which any candidate for any position should be judged. Every other aspect of their being is irrelevant If I am in hospital and in need of treatment Race, ethnicity, gender, generation, immigrant status, education and all else matter not one fuck to me, if they can stop the pain and save my life. I want the same for anyone who has any significant influence on the life of me and mine.

My mother was Salvation Army for donkey's years, she only quit when she joined a lunatic Charismatic sect in her sixties, because the Sally Army had, in her words "Gone soft" The very idea of a Paramilitary Christian organisation had always to me seemed highly suspect to begin with, but during the time that my wife was working as a senior carer in a home for homeless geriatric men I heard so many horror stories about the Sallies, that it made my hair stand on end. Such as allowing Homeless people to take a shower, but then charging them 50p for use of a towel after they got soaking wet, or telling them to make do with tissue paper, telling other homeless they were to well dressed to have charity clothes or eat in their soup kitchens, and refuing to help those who would not sing Christian hymns. To the point where many of them would rather freeze than go to the Sally Army for help. Then the final straw came for me when I was working for the Charity Shelter and literally had three 3 Salvation Army Heavies approach my self and three colleagues while we were collecting for the homeless on the street at Christmas and threaten us to go collect elsewhere as we were on their patch and stealing their donations. We had a council permit to collect and they did not, but when I called the police for assistance was told we would have to move as they were not prepared to "Get in the papers for hassling the Salvation Army"

Because many of us authors are self indulgent egoists with intermittent bouts of verbal diarrhoea who require someone to polish our rough diamonds. If you want prime examples look at T.S. Elliots unedited version of "The Wasteland" and the published and rightly famous version edited by Ezra Pound ("The better craftsman" as Elliot refers to him in his preface to the said epic poem) In a more modern example compare the early works of Anne Rice with those later works prior to her sad death in 1981, when she insisted that her books be published unedited and as she wrote them. The former are thrilling snappy well paced and frightening, whereas the latter are over long rambling diatribes that substitute story for exposition, continuity for convenient retconning and long conversations for character development and world building. Editors do a valuable job, equate the with cultural vandals if you must, but it is a false equivalence and a poor metaphor that does not stand up to scrutiny.

Given the unlikely situations that there is a god at all, my first question would be "Are you fucking insane?" The second would be "What did you think you were doing?"
