An admirer of Hitler. He murdered a black chief. Founding the Boy Scouts does not excuse him. Glad his statue is coming down.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 21, 2020:
@LiterateHiker Despite what has been claimed elsewhere on this thread you are factually correct on all counts Baden Powell met with Hitler to discuss the foundation of the Hitler youth and gave it his blessing, that is a fact backed up in Baden-Powell's own journals, as is the fact he described Mein Kampf in the same journal as "A wonderful book" Baden Powell did order the execution of the Matabele chief Uwini in 1896 by firing squad and was court martialed for it. He was acquitted on the grounds that since Uwini had already been shot by one of LBP's own men and was dieing, British Justice would not be seen to be done at HQ where despite promises to the contrary the Chief was going to be tried found guilty and executed anyway. Baden Powell therefore convened a Drum Head Court Martial found the chief guilty and had him shot...again, only this time officially. Baden-Powell later claimed he was "released without a stain on my character" (Baden-Powell, Robert. "Lessons from the 'Varsity of Life". p. 90.) and was actually commended for quick thinking in keeping everything official. I agree that disgusting avuncular statue of the old git needs to go.

At the moment in the UK there is a loud minority who despise everything Imperial. I can go more deeply into this later. It is good and healthy to question the past, but to blanket eliminate it is no different to what ISIS were doing.
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 20, 2020:
I believe no one wishes to blanket over it, or forget it, but most of us these days want an end to the "Glorious" mythology of the illustrious British Empire, the fibs told about how the "colonies" welcome English civilisation with open and grateful arms and finally and most of all we want an end to the filthy disgusting LIES about how the empire was NOT actually financed by sugar and slaves and those who traded in both at an enormous cost to life, liberty, human dignity and a culture based on the falsehood of racial superiority. In short it is time for truth to be told. We may not be able to be held accountable for the grievous misdeeds of our ancestors, but we can and we will STOP Deifying and celebrating them as heroes and paragons of virtue, when they were monsters of arrogance, callousness and cruelty.

I never knew the Souts were a religious group. I was involved with them here in Australia when my children were small but we never had anything to do with religion, never. No prayers, no mention of God or Jesus. Is this something that is going on in other countries with the scouts?
LenHazell53 replies on Jun 20, 2020:
@Triphid Hey guess what, I just looked up the rules of the Australian scouts and found this The official version of the Scout Promise of Australia (almost identical to the British one) that is and always has been the prefered version as opposed to the secular one I quoted earlier On my Honour I promise that I will do my best To do my duty to **God,** and To the Queen of Australia, To help other people, And to live by the Scout Law. and yet you said "In ALL my years both a Cub and then a Scout NEVER once was prayer apart of anything to do with Scouts or Scouting." An oath to do your duty to God is not religious or a prayer? Or did you just never notice this In ALL your years both a Cub and then a Scout?

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 20, 2020:
@Jolanta The Scouts originated in the UK and were very much tied to the C of E who financed them. Church patrol on a Sunday was mandatory, and it was this more than anything that lead to the Catholic Church forming the "Boys Brigade" so that good little catholics did not have to go to Anglican churches. Prayer was mandatory in every meeting up until the 1980's and the Boy Scout oath contained a swearing of Allegiance to "God and the Queen". It was and to a lesser extent still is a religious organisation.

LenHazell53 replies on Jun 20, 2020:
@Triphid And old Baden Powell would have hated it. In fact when girls were admitted to the UK Scouts, it was one of the major arguments against allowing the change. LBP is on record as saying girls must never be allowed in the scouts as it would lead boys astray from many pursuits, and instead lead that to the terrible sin of "Self Abuse". It was why he had his "wife" with whom he had a famously and celebrated Celibate marriage set up the girl guide movement, to keep the "fools of women" away from his lads thus ensuring they were too busy whittling at woodcraft, or clasped in prayer to have there hands stray in a southerly direction .

@FrayedBear So tragically true, Thalidomide was the pharmaceutical industry, specifically the german Pharmaceutical company Chemie Grunenthal profiteering by pushing it as a wonder drug on women as a universal panacea for "women's troubles". It was known to cause birth defects in Germany literally years before it was noticed and then proven to do so elsewhere in the world. Marketed under various names in various countries it managed to escape detection as the cause for far to long. Initially since it was give as a cure for the symptoms of PMT/PMS, the menopause, period cramps and "hysteria" it was not such a problem. It was when marketed as a cure for Morning sickness, that the horror story began. Despite Chemie Grunenthal, causing the problem and being forced to pay reparations, they continued to export the drug to the USA until 1986 as a cure for Leprosy. The same company is in trouble again today over the addictive effects and poisonousness of their opioid painkillers drug Tramadol.

@FrayedBear it was ten died, 169 (some sources say up to 200) with some degree of paralysis and out of the test group of 200,000 about one fifth became ill to a greater or lesser degree, with most recovering. Ultimately the vaccine was perfected and the death rate of 2400 per annum (mostly children) was reduced to zero by the 1980s. It was an absolutely appalling tragedy and should never have happened, and justly served as a warning for years about not rushing improperly tested vaccines out on to the open market due to political pressure, unfortunately one that is today being ignored in the rush to save the economies of the word, rather than the lives of the people.

@WilliamFleming "How do you account for the fact that 51% of US scientists believe in God?" Easy, most academic institutions rely on donations from Christians and Christian institutions, you promise me a million dollars for an electron microscope I will say I believe in whatever the fuck you want me to say I believe in. "science has not disproven the existence of God." You know that is a silly argument Bill and I am disappointed in you for using it. Science does not have to, since there is no evidence to prove the existence of Goblins, fairies, Lancelot Spratt or the Philadelphia chocolate monster either but no no one asks science to prove they do not exist.

" By attacking the sanity of religious people you are basically telling them how to live." So when a Christian missionary goes to a tribe of indigenous people and brings them the "Gospel" is he or she telling those people how to live when he says their god are not real, or are demons? The acid test for me is to take anything any religious person says about their beliefs and replace the word god with Jelly and Blancmange, and church or similar with the Rice pudding factory and then repeat it back. 'Our Jelly and Blancmange who is in the Rice pudding Factory , hallowed be your name. Your the Rice pudding Factory come, your will be done, on earth as it is in the Rice pudding Factory . Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the the Rice pudding Factory , the power and the glory, for ever and ever Amen'" If it sounds totally insane, then they probably are, and providing I was sure they were not subscribing to that grand old American, totally sane, practice of openly carrying a gun in public... then yes I would say it to their face. It is always good to look at both side of a story and make a truly informed decision before decrying a story in Trumpian terms as "Fake News" especially when the facts of the matter are essentially true. i.e. A man was beheaded on temple grounds by another who claimed, initially, in an inebriated state, to have done it as a act of human sacrifice, to end corona virus.

Do you hold that some day fairies might be proven to exist and so you are agnostic about them? Do you hold that ALL god "might" exist so are agnostic about all of them? I was about to point this out to. However, I would also point out that in this day and age, with widely available contraception for both the male and the female, in the west at least there is no excuse for unwanted pregnancies. When they do occur the blame falls squarely on the parents, both of them, as does the consequent responsibility. When religion interferes with the use of contraception, family planning and support, the male and female parent should ignore religion in favour of responsible behaviour. Should either potential parent refuse to do so, the other partner should simply refuse to participate or accept responsibility.

Even at the time people were saying that all 4 countries should have been counted separately, and then each nation given a single vote. This would have led to a stalemate, with NI and Scotland voting remain Wales being too close to call and England voting leave. However Cameron insisted on counting the votes of all 4 together resulting in a tiny minority winning on the leave side. 17,410,742 votes to leave and 16,141,241 to remain, a margin of 1,269,501 votes, out of a total population of 66,000,000.
