There is a scene in the movie "They Live" where Nada tries to persuade his friend Frank to put on a pair of glasses that show the world as it really is. Frank refuses and it takes a twenty minute fight before Nada can force him to wear the glasses and see the truth that he is nothing more than cattle. This scene is exactly what it is like coming out of religion for many people, they will fight to keep their comfortable delusion, they do not want to see, and resent anyone who even makes them think they might possibly have an inkling of a doubt that they have been a bloody gullible fool there whole life.

What amazed me was reading the headline I was perfectly willing to believe someone had stolen and sold the ACTUAL head of the mummy of the boy king. After all during WW2 the tomb was plundered by occupying soldiers, when the kings jeweled burial neck piece was found to be stuck to his ribs by the Natron used in the mummification the robbers cut off the entire rib cage, it has never been recovered.

Amphibology (noun) A sentence that is grammatically ambiguous, i.
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 4, 2019:
There is term in English for this which is a Colemanballs, named after the late sports commentator David Coleman who had a habit when in the thrall of sporting excitement, of putting his foot in his own mouth by stating to opposing facts in one sentence or pointing out the glaringly obvious and then using a mixed metaphor to contradict himself. eg "Here they come, every colour of the rainbow: black, white, brown" "There were 150 drug-related deaths in Glasgow last year, an all-time high" "Stronsay is an island surrounded by sea" "Brendan Foster wins, by himself, with 20,000 people" "When your back's against the wall that's the time to turn round and fight" "He's pulling him off. The Spanish manager is pulling his captain off!" “This game could go either way… there’s no two ways about it!” “I’m not going to stand here and say it could have been better, but it could have”
It has now been put to me that it is wrong to post the same article in multiple groups.

The word you are actually seeking is flibbertigibbet, fibberdegibbit is a deliberate mispronunciation used for comic effect. A flibbertigibbet is a gossipy person, some one who talks too much. It comes from Bert to be a Bright or vigorous person as in Albert and Flighty, again a bright or careless person and Gibbit a gallows. So a flibbertigibbet is is some one whose reckless personality will one day get them hanged.
Boffola (noun) a joke or a line in a script designed to get a laugh.
LenHazell53 comments on Jul 2, 2019:
Boffola is an odd word that seems to have come about in the 1940s derived from Boffo which was Italian slang for "really good or popular" (same root as Boffin for a clever person). Boffo was popular in circus' for hundreds of years (especially in Italy, nb. In Latin Bo fo mean so be it) as a clown name for a carefree fellow. Bofo (sic) appears in the writing of of an anonymous contemporary of Chaucer in "the most lamentable tragedy of Titus Andronicus" written in middle English and one of Shakespeare's sources where it used as a comedy name for backside or Buttocks. How ever I feel the most like derivative in this sense is the Italian slang Boffo La "There's Good/best Bit (here)"

Before smoking was banned on flights, the air in the fuselage was changed every ten minutes or so, as smoke was visible this could be seen to be done. However since smoking was banned airlines have be decreasing the regularity of air replacement as a cost saving measure (air is stored on board in very expensive super cooled liquid form and heated before being placed in to the Ventilation system). Some airline only change the air once every two hours, leading to a large ratio of methane and carbon dioxide building up in the air, leading to headaches, jet lag, air rage and nausea. I think this might be the case here

If understand you correctly your daughter is 43 years old. She has made her life choices and is presumably happy with them. You may not agree with them, but honestly it is none of your business, unless the slob actually physically assaults your daughter, then be there to offer her a bolt hole. If you interfere, you will not be thanked for it and if you daughter wants to see you, have her come and visit you, tell her at your age you are not willing to camp out for the privilege of being ignored. If she wants to visit you tell her there is no room for her boys, they will have to fend for themselves for a few days. Just my suggestion.

Tory leadership. Which do you think is/are the most important of quality(ies) for a leader.?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 28, 2019:
It depends upon from which perspective you are coming to the question. The requisite qualities for being a Tory leader are totally different from those required to be a competent leader of a country. For example in order to be a Tory leader one must by necessity hold certain views and priorities that are completely at odd with being humane, since right wing political philosophy is entirely pragmatic, materially based and denies rights to the individual when they come into conflict with the financial, economic or the state. Like wise much Tory doctrine is based upon the idea of trickle down economics theorizing that the financia well being of the elite will result in financial well being of all. This is a proven fallacy but is no the less an almost "sacred" doctrine of right wing political thinking along with the idea that people are a near infinite resource however money and property are not and so should be given superior legal status. Left wing thinking begins with the general doctrine that the well being of all citizens will by necessity result in a better society for all, that life outweighs property and that there is no default criteria to define a social elite other that achievement for the benefit of all. Therefore a "good" Tory leader will offer a package of policies and assure it is what you want and expect you to trust him/her. A "good" leader will look at what is needed and provide it and then will bring about a situation where your wants may be earned fairly.

It is subjective, if you have something to offer that only a few others can do, you can be as unsociable or socially inept as you like and you will still do well in life. In the UK most restaurants and retail outlets display a sign that say "The management reserve the right to refuse service" If this sign is displayed and some one is asked to leave they must do so or the police may be called NO reason should be given. If a reason IS given and that reason is illegal (prejudicial) then it may be contested later in court unless the objection is withdrawn, but if NO reason is given it is perfectly legal for an owner to ask anyone to leave their premises so long as it is not designated a public space.

Three ranks One standing and loading with powder and shot having just fired One kneeling waiting to fire loaded but not cocked (Pulling back the spring load flint striker) One kneeling ready to fire cocked and loaded on the command "Volley"

Since the correct pronunciation of this word is according to various dictionary sites Kwanked, I am tempted to wonder if this the word from which the word Wanker evolved. Wank, wanker and wanked have long been an etymological mystery, having seemingly sprung in to existence spontaneously somewhere between 1880 and 1940, as a military term for a despised enemy prisoner, however it would make sense if being quanked was blamed on excessive qwanking? Dialect in time dropping the Qu (K ) and adjusted giving us wanked?

Does being an atheist go hand in hand with liberal politics or are some of you Tory voters ?
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 24, 2019:
Being atheist mainly comes from a need for proof, evidence and reason. It is very hard not to notice the similarities between right wing politics and religion, the expectation that you will defer to the judgment of your "betters" without argument, the idea of a master race/chosen people, elitism, the idea of returning to a golden age, knowing your place and being content with it on the promise of "Jam tomorrow", rampant corruption being accepted as the natural state of things, black and white thinking, rallying to symbols, etc, etc, etc. So often there is a noticeable correlation if not a causative connection between the rejection of religion and right wing thinking.

LenHazell53 comments on Jun 20, 2019:
This is exactly the type of devolved word I spoke of earlier in another post. Almost every phobia is defined by the use of the word phobos Greek for fear or irrational fear and an appropriate Greek root for the source of the fear. Using this perfectly simple linguistic technique we have the basis for every named phobia with two exceptions Coulrophobia (fear of clowns) since the Greek word for clown is gelotopoiós simply writing clown in Greek text as Kloorn was considered preferable. Nomophobia However is ridiculous because it is an actual existing Phobia Nomos νόμος means the Law, therefore Nomophobia is **irrational fear of the law,** *not of loosing you Mobile phone.* Nomo here is obviously a contracting of No Mobile. Because no one has even made a serious try to create a real word, just a pathetic pun. So far as I can see Kinitochanophobia (though actually meaning fear of the loss of mobility) can be read as the "fear of the loss of my mobile," though I might prefer foritóphonophobia fear of "losing my portable noise maker."
OK.

English is an evolving and amazingly nuanced, precise language, the most accurate in the world, as locutors of this language we should be proud and defensive against its devolution in to a set of monosyllabic grudgings and phonetic spellings from which no original meaning can be defined.
The attack on Christianity continues.

I wonder if this word may have originated with the German word Mäuse (mice) in the same way we say nice weather for ducks when it rains, damp and muggy is nice weather for mice. Just a thought, nice word however.
I am wondering to what extent people decide to be atheist/agnostic or just grow out of religion

For me it was a conscious decision, born of reason and disgust in equal measures
Do you remember when monopolies were a concern? When did that stop being a worry?

When capitalist liars demonised socialism, when profit become more important than productivity, when people became an expendable commodity when we have what you want to buy was replaced with you will want what we have to sell.
Call me Mr Stupid if you like but I am even more confused about Brexit than I have been before! ...
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 19, 2019:
Lots of people can make lots of decisions, but that is not enough, every decision has to be ratified and investigated and then finally agreed to. We do not yet, thankfully, live in a dictatorship where the uninformed whim of one or another selfish idiot is a law unto itself, that everyone else must suffer for.
A fair comparison:

I have always said the LDS should be grateful to the L-Ron Hubbard trolls, thanks to them Joseph's myth as been push off the dottiest religion top spot. "Of course Xenu is not real, we all know God lives on a planet orbiting the Star Kolob!"
45% of Americans think that federal law protects LGBTQ people from discrimination.
LenHazell53 comments on Jun 18, 2019:
Most people are deluded enough to believe that since a law exists it will be enforced and that if a law is needed it must already exist. Ignorance is indeed bliss

WOW they actually need a resolution to tell their members that any form of racial superiority doctrine is wrong and that the alt right are a gang of bigots? They need to be TOLD that? Fuck me what is next years main resolution going to be , "Pay attention brothers and sisters water is wet, the sky is blue and by the way this bloke Jesus we keep going on about was a Jew!"
