@puff Last time the prime went up that high mortgage rates went up to over 13% which caused a big recession and caused not only a massive wave of bankruptcies but also resulted in layoffs and a depression... If Biden allows that the price of real estate will still go up because of the same reason it is so high now... corporate greed. Several billionaires have been purchasing outrageous numbers of homes and apartment houses or complexes and then jacking up rents sometimes as much as 80% in states with no rent control laws. In California they can only raise rent by 5% per year in states like AZ there are no controls. So tell me what happens when corporations have unscrupulous brokers buying homes and competing with each other in the same market area to bring them a large number of rental properties many of which are rented through ads and the prospective renter never meets the manager or anything? Simple the law of supply and demand kicks in and prices go up as demand increases. meanwhile average families are losing their jobs and homes.

Lizard_of_Ahaz replies on Jun 1, 2023:
@puff It doesn't work to curb inflation.... Inflation is a byproduct of corporate greed. When oil companies raise the cost of fuel the cost of transportation goes up raising the price of goods. That is what inflation is what raising interest rates does is to leave less money in the consumers hands which means you can't buy what you need or get a decent rate on a loan or credit card. So instead of buying you cut spending which lowers demand for goods resulting in more layoffs and higher unemployment. Economics is driven by demand so you can have a huge supply but without the money to purchase those goods they just sit and rot. This is why Reganomics aka voodoo economics aka supply-side economics is such a joke and not only has never worked it never can work. The concept of lowering taxes on the rich will never result in them investing in production after all why should they when they can invest in precious metals, stocks and bonds or just leave it in the bank drawing interest? Looking at the first two graphs you will see the relationship between the total percentage of wealth held by the upper .3% in this country and the top tier tax rates for those years. Notice the close relationship is with minor delays for the increasing effects and minor fluctuations it is an inverse curve. The second two are the interest rate (prime) over the last 100 years and recessions during that period.... Keep in mind the process of deregulation during the same period and if you like mark a date bracket between 6 and 12 years after that industry was deregulated (Bank Modernization act under Clinton Wall Street deregulation and market collapses etc) and you are going to find the relationships between everything I have told you in this thread. You can even add in mass shootings, domestic terrorism spikes, crime rates, rioting and no small number of other things. I have not only lived through much of this but have studied it and several other subjects my entire life.

@puff Well the economists are saying around May of next year but I am fairly certain Biden will start pressuring Powell before than because of the election coming up that year to help boost the economy. To me it is obvious but most people don't see or understand. Often those ones are the ones who make lots of noise about this things they don't understand.... The less they know the more certain they are they know everything. The more people know the less certain but they can also make excellent guess they just don't try to be exact. I am making an educated guess but Powell is unfortunately a Republican which is why he raised interest rates in an effort to cause a recession and give his party an advantage in the 2424 elections which is why the so-called "freedom caucus" is still trying to block raising the debt ceiling.... They want to collapse the economy which would make it easier for them to turn the country into a fascist dictatorship... You asked the question and I am just answering it truthfully and if you want to know how I know this one of them just admitted that is still their plan and because McCarthy blinked in the negotiations they are planning to throw him out now and making it a priority.

@puff Those would be good right now as well if you are not living from paycheck to paycheck but you didn't ask so I only worked off the top of my head for the exact investments you were asking me about. Right now since interest rates are high savings bonds are paying better interest but after January the interest rates that aren't locked in are going to start dropping so if you did invest in them my suggestion would be a longer term say at least 10 years but if you are looking to fund a child's higher education I would suggest 20 year bonds and defer the tax until they mature and use a trust so that if something happens to you they still get the money when they need it. If you buy the bonds in their first year that gives them the opportunity to go to a good community college and have access to student aide including grants. then after that as the bonds mature they can help pay for their university education costs or they can take out student loans and use the matured bonds to pay them off after they graduate as some bonds will continue to accrue interest even after the maturation date so those would be a good idea to invest in. The real issue with bonds is that cashing them in before maturity loses you money so for a personal investment if you are a person who doesn't have a lot of cash cushion they aren't as profitable.

@puff Anyone who invests in crypto is a idiot that is going to get fleeced... Unless you have time to study the stock market stay out because to make money there you need to understand how it works and have the time to watch your investments. Real estate can be a good investment but you need good credit and have to know when and where to buy. Precious metals is a market for the big boys who other sell short to drop the prices and that hurts the little guys. Once the price is down they buy again and screw you. as for banks I would suggest that if you only have a small amount of savings your local credit union is a far better place for your money that one of the big brick and mortar banks they just fuck you over with fees and don't pay interest. If you have some savings and are not living paycheck to pay check I suggest you look into Discover bank or Ally bank for savings and checking accounts Ally pays 3.85% on savings with no minimum and .1% on checking with no fees and checks are free. Discover at present pays 3.9% on savings again with no fees but no interest for checking but free checks and 1% cashback on ATM purchases. You can also look into connexus credit union they pay high interest but I am unsure of their fees and costs and synchrony bank is paying about 4% on savings but they are also heavily invested in branded credit cards and I have heard they have lost some money recently though they are FDIC insured it would be best to split your savings with a second bank so your bills don't end up being late if they do have problems with stability.

My stepson wanted to be a pitcher so I started teaching him to throw for accuracy by using one block as the target in a concrete block wall. He was having trouble hitting the target so I demonstrated that it was possible he just needed practice by hitting the same block 20 times in a row. After that he kept at it for a solid month until he was hitting it consistently then I taught him how to add speed to his pitch as well as throwing curves. He got pretty good at it after a while. My pitches though were a bit faster than yours but I was never clocked I am fairly certain they were around 80 to 90. So fast that when I threw the catcher needed a bit of extra padding in his glove.

@puff This tells me you aren't using credible sources for your information... China has been selling off their US debt because they are bankrupting their own economy while Japan has been increasing the amount they hold because interest rates have gone up. What is killing the Chinese economy is apps like "Temu" who are losing hundreds of billions and bankrupting small Chinese businesses by doing the same thing Walmart was doing in forcing them to sell at prices they can't make money at. Last year Temu lost nearly 900 million alone.... My point being I am far better informed and educated than you will ever be... This explains their losses and why the Chinese government is selling US debt to pay their own debt... https://www.wired.com/story/temu-is-losing-millions-of-dollars-to-send-you-cheap-socks/
And the debt limit keeps getting increased every time, the U.S. debt now stands at $31.4 trillion.
