Hello from Fort Collins. Staying home for more than 2 days used to trigger my depression. I don't know what happened but I have settled right in to staying home six days a week because I would not survive the virus. My work is now online so it works out okay. I have always been a loner but I admit that this level of isolation can't be healthy. I have one relative in another part of Colorado that I can talk to once a week but right now I am trying to talk her out of voting for Trump again. It is hard to meet people, especially now. Some people are willing to risk go to gathering places like restaurants, but not I. I even tried a meetup group some years ago but eventually decided it wasn't for me. I agree that pets are a comfort, but I sure wish they could speak English. I think those of us without pre-existing relationships are in a bind. I think we're just going to have to make due until the crisis passes. I'm glad you have your mother. I sure miss mine. I was born here but raised and educated in Canada, returning after the sudden death of my only sibling. The people look the same in Canada but the culture is different. It is a more compassionate community and I miss that. At least at the time I left, they didn't even have guns in the prisons (except the Supermax). I have dual citizenship and consider returning. But the fight is here and I feel a responsibility to do my part, although I did vote absentee until I returned. Were birth not luck of the draw, I surely would have chosen a Nordic country but I feel fortunate that my father chose to be part of the departure of academics from the US to Canada when I was a young child.

I am not, but I certainly have been. For me, it was more than a rut but I don't know about you. It passes for some, others have to reach out for help. Even now, I do have to force myself to do some of the things that I don't want to do because there is no one else to do it. I would hate anyone whose profile I visit to think that I was interested in them romantically. This isn't a dating website but your confusion is understandable and I'm glad you raised the issue. I'm not a huge fan of hers but I saw one of her Ted talks any was able to pick out a couple of pieces of wisdom although I can only remember one now. She said that everyone has a story that would break your heart. I suppose I was so caught up in what was going on for me at the time that it truly was a revelation that not just me and select others but absolutely everyone, at least by a certain age, has experienced something horrific outside of the normal human experience that has affected them forever. For me it was quite humbling and I try to keep that in the back if my mind at all times in order to practice compassion on a regular basis. Thank you for the reminder.

Most of it was analysis by a Princeton professor who identified the reference to the ruination of suburbs as a racist dogwhistle. I can't explain it as well as he did but I agree with him.
