@skado Thank you, that is surprising although "charlaran" might be a bit of a stretch. I wish he had explained himself. He was always so dishevelled, I often wondered if he was half cut. Here's the only thing I can think of. One thing I absolutely hate is someone trying to talk me into anything. I also hate being put in the position of having to try to convince others of anything. Maybe that or something like that was his issue, I don't know. I would for sure eradicate religion if given the opportunity but maybe not every atheist would. If there is one who wouldn't, there must be more. We're under no duty to convert anyone and there is a part of me that doesn't want to anyway because I don't want to exercise undue influence over anyone and it is probably better if they arrive at this type of decision on their own. Maybe that's how Hitchens felt. Do you know who that man with him in the video is please?

LovinLarge comments on Jul 31, 2020:
Government regulation is the only way to solve price gouging by Big Pharma.
LovinLarge replies on Jul 31, 2020:
@dermot235 I don't know for certain that it would, but if we presume that it would, I suppose there would have to be a formula that linked the costs of the drug, including R&D, to the price of the drug. This is an area of expertise that people in this field spend their careers developing ideas about how to find a balance but Big Pharma is so selfish they won't participate.

To trivialize someone's death, just because their worldview is different from ours, is exactly what we disliked about Falwell, is it not? So is it ok? Sure. It's ok to be just like the person you think doesn't deserve to be regarded as human. Everything is ok. Choices still have consequences ...
LovinLarge replies on Jul 31, 2020:
No. I haven't watched the Hitchens clip yet, I will later but I don't need to, to respond to this. No one trivialized Falwell's death and no one said he didn't deserve to be regarded as human. I did not dislike him because his worldview was different than mine, I opposed him because his output was detrimental to humankind and without factual support. That is much different than the way he encouraged the disenfranchisement of people on the basis of innate characteristics. Progressives like myself support the societal inclusion of everyone, including those who don't share our worldview so I indeed think he deserved to be regarded as human. I didn't trivialize his death, I celebrate it as one less toxic individual on the planet. As for proclaiming it, I did not go around throwing confetti when it happened because I would not want to make the loss more painful for some, but in this forum for discussion purposes I consider myself both free and obligated to tell the truth to the same degree as anyone else and I don't give a rat's ass if anyone agrees with me.

Never before in 58 years have I had to even consider such a thing.

@BitFlipper Opposing something is the opposite of being interested in it. And I just don't see this as a complex system. It just makes more sense to me to avoid a problem than to let it play out, especially when we're talking about controversial topics. I understand the liberal "anything goes" approach but I'm just not on board. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of activity in a lot of these groups anyway. I guess I will start one, employ my method and see how it goes. Thanks again.

LovinLarge replies on Jul 29, 2020:
@BitFlipper Thank you for indulging me. So if the point of groups is to gather people with a particular interest, it only makes sense to that having that interest would be a prerequisite to membership in that group. Say someone opposed to sexual deviancy joined your group because everyone is allowed, made posts and comments in the group that were critical of sexual deviancy. Presumably they would eventually be blocked. Thst problem could have been avoided if an interest in sexual deviancy had been required for nembership.

@Redheadedgammy Happy to explain and I probably should have done a better job of it in my original comment. I find two-way communication by text so limited. The last sentence of his post says "(m)aybe the Canadians are seeing themselves as the actually winner of that fight". I read that sentence prospectively as if the border closing could start a war. But he may have meant it retrospectively about the Pig War, although the US took the San Juans by way of a diplomatic resolution so I think that is why I ruled out that interpretation. I didn't realize my comment was ambiguous when I made it so thanks for the opportunity to clarify. I think these opportunities for interaction are important and I surely hope I did not offend the OP.

@Fred_Snerd My intuition tells me that you have led a diverse and interesting life and there are two examples. Thank you for sharing them. I don't think anyone really likes rules. They feel like an infringement on our liberty. I felt that way when I was young, but over time I came to accept rules because they let me know in advance what was expected of me so that I could stay out of trouble. But as you pointed out, as with everything, money has infected lawmaking to benefit the wealthy and so it will be until we get money out of politics.

@AnonySchmoose Absent a legitimate reason not to do so, I will side with a judge who heard the evidence over a civilian who did not. "Judges and police can do anything they feel like doing to citizens and not be held accountable." While we know that happens in some instances, probably more than we know, as a blanket generalization that is false because there are processes in place to establish accountability.

@Fred_Snerd That is why the development of expertise is critical to a civilized society. I can't be an expert in every field so I rely on the opinions of credible experts in fields other than my own. There are surely greater and lesser humane ways of raising and harvesting animal flesh and I think those profiting from doing so should be responsible for financing the independent development of that expertise and be required to abide by it.

@AnonySchmoose As I understand the old man's account, which may or may not be accurate, the Restraining Order was dismissed by a judge so apparently the evidence does not support your position, at least in the eyes of the judge who heard the evidence. Also, calling for someone to be expelled from their home? That is unheard of and I hope our society never sinks to that level of barbarism.

@Fred_Snerd I am concerned about fish farming on the basis of what is generally known about their operations. Each of those concerns may not apply equally or at all to every aquafarm. That would be for an expert or someone employed in the industry to determine. I am not employed in that industry and I can't be an expert in every field. I do not like the fish living their two years of life living in those barren and relatively small tanks, seemingly an impoverished life compared to a natural environment.

@Bierbasstard Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that to me. Of course you're right, it is a problem. I do like the blocking feature and I think it's necessary, but I would hope it would be used as a last resort. I only use it when I've seen enough comments from a member that I've concluded that I have no interest in what they have to say, never on the basis of a single comment. The people I usually block are the intentional troublemakers because they are not here for the same reason I am. For the record, I have never seen you post anything offensive. A lady here just blocked me because even her bio admitted that she was extremely mentally ill but she was expecting the members here to meet her needs rather than seeking actual professional help and I nudged her in that direction. She was seeking pity to avoid taking steps to help herself. I'm at the point that I don't worry about stuff I can't change anymore but I certainly understand how this effect of blocking troubles you. Great name! I like non-people names for pets, not sure why. Did Sweet Pea's leg heal up okay? I wish I had a nephew like yours. Not too long after I found the tail in the garage, I had gone out to the garage to look for the cat. He was not in his basket but something else was. I thought it was another cat so I shook the basket and a raccoon popped his head up. I got rid of the raccoon overnight and had the fence mended because as much as I would like to help it, I can't have a raccoon around here. I understand they can climb, but I haven't seen it since. My theory is that the raccoon bit Sweet Pea's tail off and I just can't imagine how painful that was. Probably used up one of his nine lives. Thanks for asking and sharing.

@MyTVC15 No apology necessary. Venting is acceptable. I know your situation feels overwhelming but only you can fix it or at least take all the steps necessary to fix it. Here are my thoughts: Above all else is always self-care. Properly eating, drinking, sleeping, exercise and keeping your home decent are critical to physical and mental health. I knew a guy who told me he was so depressed all he ate for 2 years was hot dogs because he had no interest in meal planning. At least he ate. There is no shame in going to the food bank. I have gotten some excellent meals to take home from there. The next step is to solicit the assistance of anyone you know and trust to help in any way they can, if only to listen. The next step is to apply for Medicaid in order to get your medical needs met, as we should all be entitled to. When I have difficulty with a gov program, I go to the local office in person and I assure you, they know I mean business. You must pursue that tax refund and those unemployment benefits until you get them. Everything else can wait until these things are accomplished. You hear the saying "one day at a time" but some days it is one hour at a time and some days it's just one foot in front of the other, but at least you are moving in the right direction. @phil21 It makes perfect sense. I worked with the same therapist for about 10 years until the pandemic hit. She didn't do much, mostly just listened. But it was a safe place (she was not religious) for me to talk out loud to another person, sometimes about the discrepancy between what I thought and what I felt. Occasionally she would chime in with something of value or cause me to think of something I'd expressed differently. I made so much progress over that period that now I would be embarrassed to admit some of the things I did near the beginning. I could tell her anything and I think she came to know me better than anyone else does. I believe that relationship played a key role in the stability I've achieved. @Fred_Snerd I am sorry about your predicament and wish you were closer. Most industries in most of Colorado are thriving. Men in health care are particularly needed.
