@phil21 Major Depressive Disorder can be so powerful that it feels like "knowing". There are some companies that will donate drugs if you don't have insurance. Anyway, I encourage you to get those supports back in place because they are the best hope you've got. But I also want to say that I think most of life is about performing chores, unless you're part of the 1% and maybe even then. I know they feel like drudgery sometimes but from the outside I can see that those chores you are performing are important. But we all have limits, you can't do everything so you may have do set some boundaries. Perhaps it is time for your children to become more independent. I'm going to stick my neck out and give you my personal opinion on the sex issue. If I were in your shoes, I would tell my wife how upsetting the prospect of never having satisfying sex again is for me. This issue is going to hinge on communication. Maybe she doesn't realize how you feel. Maybe she doesn't realize your sex was unsatisfying. Maybe she wouldn't mind an affair if you got her permission. You've probably already considered all the things I've mentioned, but only you can take action on them.
I'd love to see a discussion of the issues here, and what it could mean in other countries, say the ...

LovinLarge replies on Jul 20, 2020:
@Unpretentious Cats have existed longer than coyotes but they are still fair game in the food chain, as is the human animal. It seems to be the killing of birds that troubles you. It troubles me too and I try to discourage it. It seems like the solution here would be to find a way to keep the cats out of your backyard. If a physical barrier isn't possible, there are various tools and products that can be effective.

@Unpretentious I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with this. We have a local non-profit called Friends of Ferals that handles situations like this where the local government authority doesn't. Perhaps someone will help you or at least instruct you. But you are infringing on their territory, not the other way around because cats predate humans by millions of years. They are not trying to irritate you, they are only trying to survive. In the larger scheme of things, is this truly significant?

Thank you. I've never gone looking for a cat. Mine are essentially all other peoples' discards and that suits me fine. I try not to think about that situation in Australia. I can tell you that I would never even travel to a place that would take such horrifying action. There are experts in this field who could provides alternatives but I haven't studied up on it. In the US, I think spaying and neutering can be cost-prohibitive or appear to be so. It needs to be mandatory and as such provided free of charge by local authorities. But as you say, perhaps even that would be insufficient. I would like to see animals be treated as a civic responsibility rather than entertainment but that will be a long time in coming. In the final analysis, like with everything else, I try to accomplish as much as I can every day and help others including animals as much as I can along the way and at this point I have to be satisfied with that.

@Fernapple There's no reasonable argument against what you've said and you've explained it well. Not to detract from your point, my only quibble is that I don't think such actions are taken mindlessly, nor do they need to be. Here in the US, it is a faction of the conservative element that opposes masking as a freedom issue. My theory is that conservatism is a form of Attachment Disorder in that they have a diminished sense of community, which explains why they don't feel a responsibility to do their part to protect the community by wearing a mask. The very first thing our federal goverment should have done was to issue PPE including masks to all residents and ensure that there would be enough PPE for the foreseeable future. PPE is not cheap and most of it is disposable. Availability may have helped. My point is that mindless submission to an external authority is not desirable and the fundamental problem is selfishness, which is common to other uniquely American problems. They want the full benefit of the community while contributing absolute least.

LovinLarge replies on Jul 19, 2020:
@Barnie2years I agree a source is preferable as a matter of assessing credibility, but my experience is that online, including this site, most factual allegations including quotations are not referenced properly (especially memes!) and the worst offenders are the conservatives, many of whom don't know how facts are established or understand the significance of evidence. Yesterday some con on here was making allegations against Antifa when the article he linked didn't even mention Antifa. When I called him on it, he continued to insist that it did. That's an old con trick, referencing an article and pretending the article says something it doesn't. I've seen them reference articles that weren't even related to the issue under discussion. In the case of a quotation, the source, date and context are preferable. I don't see anything contentious in your post and I was glad to have the opportunity to read it. Citation is preferable but nothing to get your panties in a bunch over.

@LucyLoohoo I didn't say they were cut off, I said they had less access to the things that would help them protect themselves, which makes them more vulnerable. There's a plethora of data to show that disenfranchised populations have less access to virtually everything than the wealthy, although having less money really makes it a matter of common sense. For instance, I just saw an ad on Craig's List about a working poor family of five that still doesn't have masks. That's what I'm doing this afternoon.

These are truly great, honest men who dedicated their lives to the public interest and I am heartbroken that they were relegated to the sidelines. Your video identifies movements as influential to progress and I think the undercurrent was that at least for now, this is an important role for third parties. There are only two realistic choices for president right now and Bernie wouldn't be working with Joe, supporting Joe and asking us to support Joe if he didn't believe Joe would act in the best interest of most Americans at least most of the time.

Some people don't want to listen and I respect that. I like these non combative discussions and I truly appreciate your perspective. I am on board theoretically but not always practically. Yes, the Americans who don't want true equality for all terrify me, too. That's why I don't want them to have any power. They would not support everyone having their basic needs met equally but I certainly do. I know it sounds simple but not even everyone agrees on what basic needs are, or worse, that everyone is deserving. Ridiculous I know, but conservatives are only concerned with their own and fuck everyone else. I am not a capitalist and the American dream was never more than a fantasy for many if not most Americans even though they don't know it. I never dreamed that in my lifetime in America a Democratic Socialist would garner the support that Bernie has and it did my heart tremendous good, so to speak. Not terribly surprising that he was crushed by the establishment, but disappointing nonetheless. I have much work to do today so if I drop out of the conversation, please don't be offended.

@RoboGraham Those changes were still incremental in that they didn't happen overnight and that they lay the groundwork for further change. @Fred_Snerd All good points. I'm not sure that most Americans want to establish "true equality for all" but I am sure that this phrase means different things to different people and that may be part of the problem. Look, I just want society to progress and I want to use my vote in the most likely way for that to happen, but at this particular point in time progress may mean ensuring the continuation of democracy and the rule of law. Voting for someone who is not going to win can't do that and may detract from it happening at all.

The handling of the pandemic is bad enough, but I do believe that if Trump gets a second term American democracy may well fail and we will be relegated to third world status in terms of a renegade governmental regime no longer subject to control by the people. On the basis of some of things he has done and said already, I think there is a very real possibility that this will be our last presidential election for the foreseeable future if Trump is reinstalled.
