Many have been converted to dwelling houses,clubs, antique stores etc but quite a few are just slowly decaying as it would cost too much to renovate them.

I attended Sunday school and then church every Sunday from the age of 5 to 16 but it never meant anything to me. It was just another not very pleasant task like washing the dishes or bringing in firewood. I base my atheism purely on the non existence of the Judeo/christian/muslim god .Having read the first few books of the old testament in some detail it is obvious (to me) that Jewish monotheism was adopted ,possibly taken from Zoroastrianism, as a control measure and justification for their warlike aquisitive behaviour. Some other gods which are little more than belief in some sort of life force may have more validity but since we in the west are normally referring to "yaweh" when we say "god" I think those who call ourselves atheists are quite entitled to do so.
