Is Turnbull the worst PM we've ever had?
MsDemeanour comments on May 17, 2018:
The problem with Turnbull is his total lack of balls. Once upon a time he wasn't religious, he was pro gay marriage, was progressive in addressing global warming but on being offered the top job, he compromised all his beliefs to become a puppet. I hated Abbott but at least he stuck by what he actually believed in.

Given the increased scientific support for the purported benefits of mindfulness and the practice ...
MsDemeanour comments on May 15, 2018:
Mindfulness need not have anything to do with meditation or relaxation. A modern psychological take on mindfulness is 'being in the present'. As such you can do it with your eyes open. Notice the sensations your body feels, hears, sees, smells, tastes. Notice if your shoulders are tense or your hands are clenched. Just notice. And be an observer of your thoughts. People think they ARE their thoughts. But if you observe, all sorts of things pop randomly in your mind. Step back and observe those thoughts....letting the come and go. You don't have to believe everything that pops into your mind

What do people in this forum think about "bad" words?
MsDemeanour comments on May 5, 2018:
oh for fuck's sake words are just made up human constructed noises. If you let them offend you then they have power over you. I refuse to let a human sound or written marking (word) hold the power to upset me. Besides as Billy Connelly says "its not true that people use swear words because they have limited vocabulary. I know lots of words but I still love the word fuck".

I’m wondering if folks find it more difficult to have friends with religious beliefs, or friends ...
MsDemeanour comments on May 4, 2018:
Some of my friends believe in a god of some sort but none are particularly religious. If they were religious and had opposing political views they wouldn't be my friends. They might be friendly work colleagues but we aren't going to hit it off as great friends who share great conversation.

In countries outside of USA, the more educated people are, the less religious people are. I don't understand what is happening in USA. Don't they teach critical thinking?
What moral code do you follow now that you are non-religious?
MsDemeanour comments on May 3, 2018:
Our morals are evolutionary. Back in the day, wearing our bear skins and living in caves we soon learned that if we were obnoxious pricks, thieves or murderers we would be kicked out of the clan. We are pack animals and couldn't survive solo so we constantly checked that we were pulling our weight (notice we still compare ourselves with others). We learned altruism because we wanted people to be kind to us when we became sick or injured, others in turn would care for us.
Atheists are too nice.
MsDemeanour comments on May 3, 2018:
I agree with you. Religions are dangerous. They cause division, and excuse bigotry, sexism, racism in the name of their religion. It is not harmless free thought, there are consequences.

What’s your source for morality?
MsDemeanour comments on May 1, 2018:
Evolution. We are a pack animal. Those with antisocial behaviours were ostracised from the group. Their genes died out. We learned through evolution to cooperate with each other. We learned altruistic behaviour because we needed others to care for us if we were sick or in trouble.

Name something women should stop doing.
MsDemeanour comments on Apr 18, 2018:
Most stereotypes are completely biased and culturally based. Take 'nagging' for instance. Men can nag as much as women but along with the long list of female adjectives: slut, whore, cunt, feisty, frumpy, airhead, bitchy, bombshell, bossy (men are more likely to be called 'strong-minded)' bubbly, ditsy, emotional, frigid, hormonal, hysterical, illogical, irrational, pushy, shrill, sassy, they have been invented by men, to keep women subserviant. eg: It's ok for a man to be a slut but not a woman. Words like hysterical, irrational, illogical are used to discard female points of view. According to neuroscientists using MRIs it is impossible to tell a male brain from a female. these adjectives have evolved culturally. For millions of years women were kept subjegated because they weren't physically as strong. You would think that with the gender divide narrowing we could embrace people as individuals instead of being so quick to judge.

Why does it seem to be that there are more male atheists and agnostics when women are often ...
MsDemeanour comments on Apr 15, 2018:
Good question. My guess here. If you consider the poorer countries of the world, they are the most religious (except maybe USA which is an anomaly no one can figure out. ;) ) . The poorest, the most subjugated have to have something bigger than themselves or life isn't worth living. Now in our first world culture, women have only had the vote a mere hundred years. When they were wed, they were told to 'obey' their husband, the head of the house. They handed over their property and husbands had the right to discipline their wives. Have a look at a dinner party today and see who does the cooking, the washing up. Yes I know it is changing but for generations women have been indoctrinated to serve men. Just as we still don't have equal representation of the sexes in parliament, we have yet to catch up. Women aren't paid as much as men. Men are usually physically stronger and can use that to instill fear (I've only ever met one that used it and it was terrifying). So I think evolutionarily women have had a bigger leap to make. I also think women are more reliant on their social set. So if they renounce their religion they have to lose friends and families and often even culture. Perhaps I am wrong and it is equally difficult for men. In any case education is key. The more women are educated and gain autonomy the less likely to hang on to superstitions. Sorry but I can't include USA in my answer because I simply can't understand why religion would be increasing there unless it is because of growing poverty
I'm interested in what else you do in Oz in support of your non religious views?

Interesting comment that I will think more on. But humans are animals too and I love that just as animals bring joy to us, we can bring joy to them. I watched a youtube clip about dog personalities. They were trained to sit still in an MRI. When their owner walked up to them, the parts of the brain that release dopamine (the feel good hormone) lit up in the brain. This was evidence that they felt joy to see their owner.
"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed ...
MsDemeanour comments on Apr 15, 2018:
This is so true. The people attracted to govern are megalomaniacs and narcissists. This is why present government needs a completely new system. I'd like to see members of the public who are experts in their field (whether military, of social services or whatever portfolio) approached and asked if they would like to serve their country in that particular field. We could still vote but we would be voting for someone who actually knew something about the field in which they were going to serve. Also I think a mental health check should be a pre-requisite for all who want to enter politics. :D
