I live here. A stunt for the GOP base since they knew he wouldn't sign it. Yet, anything of any importance that would benefit people who live here is being foot dragged and delayed or just ignored.

Your neighbor across the lake, Michigan, is stuck with the same bullshit- a Republican legislature who don't want the Democrat Governor to get another term (a woman Governor, of all things! gasp! quail!) and so they waste time with this kind of stunt. They even want to sell off public assets like toll bridges and airports rather than have a tiny gas tax to repair the roads, they're that allergic to taxes in principle.

"Thou shalt not kill" (or literally "murder"), in Jewish law, applied only within the tribe. Everyone else was fair game and in fact they were supposed to be wiped out or enslaved as heretics. I suppose they are following the strict interpretation of that commandment. But other Christians like to say that Jesus replaced the Law with Grace, so everyone is supposed to be forgiven equally. I can't account for their insanity, other than to say they use their religion as an excuse for their hate.

"A true pedophile can't resist for long" is a ridiculous generalization. This is the argument used by people who think someone who commits one offense will inevitably commit more and therefore needs to be in prison for life. Pedophilia is a distinct sexual orientation, but that does not make it inevitable that a person will act on it, any more than a homosexual in past decades would act on that orientation despite the cultural shame attached to it. An individual's willpower is just that- individual. What's true for one might not be true for another. The OP's father may have dealt with these thoughts his whole life, and never acted on them; we can't know at third hand over the internet. In any case, there's no one rule that fits everyone.

'The report by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III: “Sanders told this Office that her reference to hearing from ‘countless members of the FBI’ was a ‘slip of the tongue.’ . . . She also recalled that her statement in a separate press interview that rank-and-file FBI agents had lost confidence in Comey was a comment she made ‘in the heat of the moment’ that was not founded on anything.”' So she lied outright in a national press conference, completely fabricated what "countless members of the FBI" supposedly said but in fact never said, and insisted that it was the truth when it was something she made up on the spot. This is not the Post editorializing, it's a quote from the Mueller report. Explain how lying to the nation, and not retracting it until under oath in front of the Special Counsel months later, meets your definition of "brilliant and fair"? While we're here, let's see some other lies she has been caught in.... https://www.politifact.com/personalities/sarah-huckabee-sanders/statements/byruling/false/

@SeaGreenEyez I did not say the bill was anything to do with President Obama. I am discussing the reaction to it. What I said was, "The ammunition stockpiling craze", the subject of the OP link, also happened in reaction to Obama's election, and for the same reason. Irrational gun owners on the far right bought into a myth that ammunition was about to be restricted or banned. It did not happen then; it is not happening now. Unlicensed dealers are already forbidden from selling ammunition. I don't see how this changes anything. Online sales are interstate commerce and therefore a federal matter. This will run afoul of the Constitution, as it should. Nobody in this discussion is out to kill anyone. I am pointing out that requiring background checks for ammunition purchases is not going to change anything, despite the hopes of one side and the fears of the other.

At least, he doesn't seem to trust her to genuinely express what she wants without a hidden agenda; and he doesn't feel free to participate or not based on his comfort level. "Why does sex have to be about control..." It isn't. It's between equal partners, ideally. But, between equal partners, sometimes one can, for the time they agree to, assume a passive role and be completely acted upon with no demands on them. This can be an extremely freeing thing for someone who has demands and responsibilities placed on them constantly in their daily life. Don't think of it as control as much as a relaxation. She's asking him to treat her to the equivalent of a spa day, only it's sex.

@Piratefish Um... because the religious movement chose abortion as the issue of choice with which they would mobilize their base, take over the Republican party, and try to turn America into an effective theocracy? How many Democratic legislatures do you see voting to restrict abortion rights? Whether individual Republican legislators do or do not support abortion rights, most of them are afraid to vote their conscience because of the control the religious right has over the Republican primary process. Religious conservatives are a disproportionate power bloc in the Republican party, and they will hammer any politician who is insufficiently conservative by their definition. Whatever you're shaking your head about, maybe it will dislodge the chunk of willful ignorance that keeps you from seeing the way things are. You can wish for us to get outside the categories of the political party system, but those categories exist because they work. The Republican party is ruthlessly organized to get things done and accomplish their agenda, and their agenda is now determined by the religious right to a frightening extent. If you don't want to live in The Handmaiden's Tale, the left needs to get organized and win elections.

Paul4747 replies on May 25, 2019:
@Healthydoc70 Well, exactly. So if they're this dismissive of women suffering such an ultimate violation, how could one imagine they'd respect a woman's rights in *any* circumstances? Imagine their attitudes on some other issues: "Women are physically and mentally less capable than men, they shouldn't expect the same pay." "It's just natural for men in the workplace to compliment women on their appearance, if a woman can't accept it graciously there's something wrong with her." "Family leave is an undue burden on the employer. A woman who chooses to have a child needs to decide her priorities and either have a job or raise a family." "Women have no place in our military. They're just a distraction. Young men will be getting themselves killed protecting women who shouldn't be there in the first place." These are all arguments I've heard firsthand over the years from conservatives. You can't make this shit up. They really treat women as second-class citizens, and at the same time claim that this treatment is actually putting them on a pedestal; they're too precious to society to go fight on the front lines or work full time jobs, they're supposed to be raising families (like June Cleaver did)!

And what do you suggest doing as an alternative? Your current legal options are 1) stay home, or 2) move to another country. Otherwise, support a candidate or get involved yourself. Run for office. Write editorials. Go out and canvass for your party. Work for change. **Do something.** Instead of just griping that the system is broken.

@Varn People who go around saying the system is broken actually mean, "My side lost". When Clinton won, Republicans insisted there was no way that womanizing criminal could have won. Let alone *twice*. And when Obama won, they *freaked*. The system was completely broken, he wasn't even an American, it was the End Times. But they responded by mobilizing their base and electing two Republicans in response; both times when the Democrats should have had easy wins. Clinton had the best sustained economy in world history, Gore should have coasted in on his coattails. And Trump was- Trump. But the Republicans were willing to use their surrogates in the right-wing media to distribute lies and outright slander (at one point in a book called *Slander* which accused mainstream media of doing exactly what the right -wing media was up to). They painted Gore as a liar by taking completely truthful remarks out of all context and then spinning them for endless media cycles. And the mainstream press ended up reporting on the story, because otherwise they would be accused of hiding the "truth" and favoring Gore. And of course Trump was a shameless liar, but again the media was duped into "reporting the story" about Clinton and couldn't simply say "Trump lied about his opponent again today, film at 11" without actually reporting the allegation. And because Hillary was not the nicest person, and a woman, she got classified as a bitch by (frankly, from the ones I knew) a lot of bitchy white women, who seemingly said to themselves, "I wouldn't vote for someone who acts exactly like me... but I have no problem voting for someone who acts just like my husband." Factor in those Democrats who weren't sufficiently excited and decided that, since their candidates were shoo-ins, they could either stay home or register a principled protest vote for a third party, and you had two Republican victories. Because the thing is, there's no right-wing "third party", and three or more left-wing. So now a bunch of far left liberals say the system is broken. No, it worked as intended. They just didn't vote for the candidate who had a chance to **win**. They threw their votes away, and were sad when the other team won the election. To throw the Republicans out and keep them out, the Left will have to get more smart than principled and practice strategic voting. Don't protest and "vote your conscience" when it comes to the elections, come out and vote to WIN. Anything else throws yet another victory to the other side.

Paul4747 replies on May 18, 2019:
@EdwinMcCravy "Love" is just a chemical reaction caused by a release of hormones and glandular secretions in the brain. It facilitates pair-bonding and helps in raising the next generation of the species. It falls apart when the male's drive to procreate seeks a new recipient for his seed. There's no such thing as "love". Many people have made some version of the above argument. They see "love" as a human delusion that's entirely subjective. But to almost everyone, it also means something greater than that. Likewise, the concept of "God" began as a personification of natural forces, and grew into the supernatural ruler of a tribe; this tribe, through military victories, became dominant in its region and their concept of "God" became more widely accepted. Even though this tribe was later conquered, the concept survived, and in a modified form was adopted by the conquerors and imposed throughout their empire centuries later, until it became one of the dominant forms of worship on the planet. Clearly billions of people do have a concept of the word "God" that is agreed upon and serves as a common point of reference, whether we agree on the objective meaning or not.

And thus failing to take into account the number of times that a rapist might actually be an unknown assailant; or worse, when it's a spouse or family member and a woman has all too many reasons not to press charges and tear her family apart, lose her home and shelter, lose contact with the rest of her family, *and* very likely face the disbelief of law enforcement at the same time. They chose a great screencap of him; he looks like he's having an aneurysm. That we should be so lucky.
It’s time for us to have an unapologetic atheist in the Oval Office - The Washington Post

Appalling ignorance and bigotry shown against atheists in the USA, It really needs prominent people who don’t believe in God to speak out and demonstrate that they have the courage of their convictions. Gays have come out, it seems incredible that atheists haven’t. If Bernie Sanders can’t...

But if he's the nominee, he'll get my vote. The alternative is 4 more years of Trump. I don't vote on "principle" or who's "worthy", I vote to win.

I live have lived in the U.S. all of my life... and on this issue, I don't understand the lack of common sense at all.... although the suggestion of guys wanting guns to make up for their small dicks does explain a part of it.

@Sticks48 You assume all violence occurs in the home? Pay attention. And for that matter, I would not want to try to maneuver a shotgun in my tiny apartment. Many collect firearms because of historic interest and because they are things of beauty in and of themselves. It IS a hobby, whether you consider it a "ludicrous" hobby or not. I consider Beanie Babies ludicrous, but there you are.

This is undeserving of comment, but I'll try to respond with some seriousness. Do you actually know anyone who owns guns? The problem with the gun debate is that both sides talk only among themselves instead of talking to each other. They deal in stereotypes; either a person is a nut who carries around an AR in the back of his pickup, or a gun grabber who wants to confiscate every squirrel rifle. Nobody recognizes even the *possibility* of a middle ground. Almost every gun owner I know (many who voted for Trump, which is another story) favors some type of regulation and training, mostly very rigorous training. Next to nobody wants unrestricted gun ownership. It's a hobby like any other for gun owners. Almost nobody is gearing up for the end of society; we just enjoy the skill used in shooting and shooting well, the technology and craftsmanship of a well-made firearm. At the same time, most believe in self-defense and want that ability. Criminals don't care whether they're carrying illegally; it's foolish to restrict a law-abiding person's ability to carry a gun as long as they're trained in its use.
