Democrats can Beat Trump without Impeaching Him.

"Cowardly"... why use such a loaded word? It's not cowardly to make a realistic assessment of the likelihood of an impeachment resulting in conviction in the Republican Senate (slim to none), the likely public reaction (perceiving it as a political trick by which Democrats are trying to force Trump out of office), and knowing the political hay that Trump would make of such proceedings daily and the extent to which it would backfire and rile up his base. It's extremely shrewd not to start a battle that you know you won't win. Save the political capital to spend where it does some good.

@TomMcGiverin See https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2016/05/31/nader_elected_bush_why_we_shouldnt_forget_130715.html Without needing to click that link, here's the main facts of why Nader defenders are dead wrong: 'The official Florida tally gave Bush the win by 537 votes (48.847 percent to 48.838 percent), while Nader racked up 97,488 votes. The national exit poll asked respondents how they would vote in a two-person race between Bush and Gore. Political scientist Gerald Pomper summed up the results in a 2001 Political Science Quarterly overview: “approximately half (47 percent) of the Nader voters said they would choose Gore in a two-man race, a fifth (21 percent) would choose Bush, and a third (32 percent) would not vote. Applying these figures to the actual vote, Gore would have achieved a net gain of 26,000 votes in Florida, far more than needed to carry the state easily.” But that is not quite the end of the story. Tony Schinella, a self-described Nader supporter, in a 2004 blog post cited by Disinfo, said we should not apply the national exit poll to Florida, but we instead should look at the Florida exit poll, which showed “the results as Bush 49 percent, Gore 47 percent” in a two-person race. That looks like Bush would have slightly benefited in Florida from Nader’s absence, but that is not definitive either. The Florida exit poll had a sample size of 1,829. Nader’s support in Florida was 1.63 percent, meaning the pollsters only found approximately 30 Nader voters -- a sample too infinitesimal from which to extrapolate. (Consider that the official margin of victory was 0.009 percent. One voter in the Florida exit poll sample amounted to 0.055 percent, more than the margin.) In fact, some argue that the national exit poll yielded too few Nader voters for the purposes of analysis. So in 2006, professors Michael C. Herron and Jeffrey B. Lewis conducted a granular “ballot-level” analysis of 3 million Florida ballots, because “ballot images directly reveal voting behavior in its most raw form, unmitigated by hindsight, social desirability, or other intervening affects.” By looking at the partisan nature of the down-ballot choices made by Nader voters, the two scholars estimated that the Gore-Bush breakdown would have been about 60-40. That’s a slightly smaller ratio than found in the national exit poll, but nonetheless a clear lean toward Gore. Herron and Lewis note this means Nader voters were not all left-wing, yet they still conclude, “Nader spoiled Gore’s presidency only because the 2000 presidential race in Florida was unusually tight.” The extreme tightness of the 2000 result makes it easy for Green sympathizers to cast blame elsewhere, such as Stein’s point that “many D's voted for greater ...

@JesseBoren Which "over 1000 seats" are you referring to? You do realize that Trump LOST the popular vote, and is in office only because of a fluke of the structure of the Electoral Office? While it's true that some traditional Democrats voted for Trump, it was based on a distaste for Clinton as much as any "message" that Trump put out. His appeal to nativists and the disaffected to blame everything on foreigners, is no different from your appeal to blame everything on "corporate sellouts"; it ignores the complexities of a changing global economy which has moved away from heavy manufacturing into services and information, and away from unskilled labor into a highly educated workforce. There's no going back. (And by the way; how is Trump not the very definition of a corporate sellout?) For example, Trump's promise to reinvigorate the coal industry ignores the facts that coal is about the least efficient energy source possible, does enormous damage to the environment both in its mining and its burning, and that there are far better sources which we could be putting our money into developing- which would also provide jobs to former coal industry workers. But they don't want to hear those newfangled notions. Trump appealed to their anger over the changing culture and loss of their identity as coal miners; Clinton told the truth, and lost their votes. Mind you, she could have told the truth in a nicer way, but there was no way to tell them "We're not going all-in on coal" that would have appealed to them anyway, in contrast to Trump's promising them the moon, the stars, and Federal subsidies. Trump is willing to throw the economy and the environment away for votes; Clinton wasn't.

@demifeministgal No matter how much people have, some people will want more. There's always an incentive to earn. BUT: in my example above, since nobody would be forced to work such a job merely to survive, the society would have to offer a very decent wage or other incentive to do it. Take for another example, my current career in corrections. Sure, you could pay people $10 to do it, but you'd get a very different caliber of person doing the job and they wouldn't do it the same way. Prisons would look like the stereotype with corrupt staff and prisoners running the cell block, not trained professional staff. The dirtier the job, the more you need to pay if you want it done well.

@Stephanie99 From my perspective, that's what's really frustrating about dating. Women talk (or write) about how important honesty is, but then have no problem... How exactly did we get the Venezuelan Assembly to declare Maduro illegitimate, and 54 other nations to agree? Did WE make Maduro rig his own reelection? Obviously it's in our interests if this dictator is run out of power. That doesn't translate to "It's an American plot." It's also good for Venezuela. They started this all on their own. Now the "Blame America First" crowd are agreeing with Maduro that it's a scheme by us against him.

@chazwin @Trajan61 Trajan is absolutely right (it feels weird saying that after the debates we've had elsewhere...) Maduro is a dictator who staged a rigged election to retain power. Major opposition parties were banned from participating. As an analogy, would you consider Trump winning in 2020 legitimate if the Democrats, Greens, and Libertarians were suddenly forbidden from running candidates? The Venezuelan Assembly and the OAS both declared Maduro's reelection unconstitutional. 54 nations have recognized Guaido as the legitimate President. It's only Maduro (and people who blame America for everything) saying that it's a US-backed coup.

@Moravian ??? My sarcasm detector may be malfunctioning... Bush the Elder (and the coalition) stopped when he did because the UN resolution called for expelling Iraqi forces from Kuwait, not for a regime change. And also because the visuals of the Republican Guard being slaughtered by American air power were sickening and threatened to turn TV audiences against the war. Beyond that, Iraq remaining as a counterweight to Iran was in our interests. And afterward, Cheney made at least one speech explaining that getting rid of Saddam would have left a power vacuum and dragged us into a decades-long commitment to rebuilding their society, cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives, and turned every nation in the region against us. And he was absolutely right. How Cheney got from there to being a leading advocate for regime change speaks volumes for how hypocritical the neocons are.
