Ok, ok, after this I'll leave this thread alone... Why haven't the cops given this person an equipment violation for driving with an obstructed rear windshield? Afraid they're going to violate the 1st Amendment? (I could actually buy that explanation...) How does this guy parallel park, ffs? What happens when he backs out of the driveway? I'm waiting for the headlines when he backs over his own kids. "Jesus Sticker Kills." I'm out.

What you're saying is, don't trust the media unless it agrees with you. The mainstream is the mainstream for a reason; it has the most resources, it's most reliable, and it checks its sources. I'm extremely dubious (not to mention suspicious) of anyone claiming to have found "the hidden truth" all by themselves, for the world to see. That's the stuff of great fiction and mythology, but not real life. Woodward and Bernstein uncovered Watergate because they had a huge staff of researchers and assistants and editors backing them up. That's how investigative journalism works. Not a lone wolf reporter who knows The Truth Is Out There.
The Burden Of Proof Is On The Russiagaters [caitlinjohnstone.com]
Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
There's a point at which skepticism is justified, and then one at which it's skepticism for the sake of skepticism. Multiple indictments have been issued in this case. Guilty pleas have been taken. It's safe to say the burden of proof is being met. And it's also completely fair to ask, what's your alternate scenario? If not Russia, who? At some point, if you just go on rejecting evidence, you have to come up with a theory of your own that fits the facts.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
Is "progressive enthusiasm" another phrase for "far left wackiness" like Abdul El-Sayed here in Michigan? Candidates whose positions are so far to the Left that, although they can win a primary, have no chance of winning a general election. We don't need that. We need centrist candidates who have broad appeal, not just to Democrats.

I don't know. Has he come out and actually apologized for the decades of the church covering up and condoning child abuse (why mince words- it was rape)? Has he promoted women to the clergy? Has he gone about dissolving the massive wealth of the Vatican Bank and the Church as a whole and making it a tool to help the needy, or is the Catholic Church still just a money machine? Has he overturned the Church's ridiculously antiquated opposition to birth control, which is especially hurtful to those poor he professes to care about the most? Until these steps are taken, I don't see how his "modernization" is any more than cosmetic. Beyond which, I don't believe in his God, obviously.

Paul4747 comments on Jul 23, 2018:
“The whole idea of tax exemption for nonprofit organizations that are doing charitable, religious and educational work is... to incentivize the good work they do to make our society better." Well, that's a massive assumption, isn't it? Whether they're doing "good" work is a subjective judgment. That's been the problem all along with the tax-exempt status. I don't agree that churches agitating to outlaw choice and de-fund Planned Parenthood, for example, are making our society better. I feel as if they ought to pay taxes like any other special interest group.

He thought it over, performed a risk assessment, said "See you, Jimmy!" and went the other direction. They weren't used to dealing with Americans in those days, I guess.

God, Trump and the meaning of morality - The Washington Post
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Two of these parishioners summed up everything wrong with the fundamentalist Xian worldview. "In the end it doesn't matter." "A true Christian doesn't have to worry about that." Since the world is going to end, and God is controlling everything, we don't have to make choices. We don't have to worry about consequences. We don't have to *think for ourselves*. The fact that this President is violating every moral principle the Xians claim to stand for, doesn't mean he can't still be a good Xian President. It's revolting.

Would you raise your children religious just to fit in?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Well.... When my daughter was born, I was attempting to be religious myself, sincerely seeking to believe (or seeking something to believe in). By the time I realized I was an atheist, she was already going to Sunday school and enjoying it, making friends, appearing in plays, etc. These days I just model atheism for her, providing logic and science and making sure she understands that religion can't be literally true. She's already there, realizing that evolution happened, the world is much older than the fundamentalist sect I used to belong to says, and so on. I just have to make sure she has the tools to make up her own mind.

Should I attend a wedding at church as an atheist?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Since you ask for opinions... There's no god, so there's no significance about the building to you, right? I've gone to funerals with religious services and gritted my teeth. I've gone to see my daughter in church plays. It's not about me... it's about other people. I can't be so hung up on myself as to let myself miss out on the lives of people I love. You, however, should do what you feel comfortable with.

Sometimes it is so hard to figure it out!!!!
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Thing is, humans tend to see conspiracies everywhere. It's not just Trumpites, it's the times we live in. People would rather believe a conspiracy killed JFK (a conspiracy which has remained silent for 55 years, not a single member going to the press or publishing his memoirs or bringing out credible evidence) than believe that a single unbalanced man could shoot the President. They would rather believe that corporations conspire together to keep people poor, instead of the simpler idea that CEOs are greedy. Yes, there are "conspiracies", in the sense that people work together, one hand washes the other. There are cover-ups like Watergate and Bill Clinton's fiasco. Russian hackers did influence an election. But I pretty much guarantee that CNN and the Washington Post (the mainstream media) are going to find out about them before the internet buffs.
What if you are the GOD ?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
The Martian philosophy from Heinlein's *Stranger in a Strange Land*: "Thou art God." Every self-aware being is God. You, me, everything and everyone that has this awareness. ("Grokking", in the vernacular of the novel.) In the novel, this came with magical powers (due to Martian discipline and training, it was science fiction after all) but the principle that knowing you're God and all things around you are also God means essentially the same thing as being an atheist. You have no responsibility to an external deity, you bear complete responsibility for your own actions, and also responsibility to conduct yourself rightly.
How sure are you there isn't "gods"?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
It's almost completely certain that there is no god/goddess/spaghetti monster/holy toaster. It is possible, just barely possible, that a demi-urge exists who created the Universe and set it in motion, set up the laws of physics so life is possible, did all these things and then sat back and is watching the process. Maybe even started the process of evolution. But it's entirely certain to me, and (in my opinion) to any thinking person, that there's no personal deity, no old man in the clouds picking winners and losers, granting wishes based on the merit of the person making the wish. This can be seen by a simple fact: *there are no miracles*. Prayer doesn't work. Any supposed miracle or answered prayer, on closer examination, is revealed as confirmation bias and random chance. The "holy" books are the tribal mythology of desert peoples centuries ago, glorifying their bloody deeds and codifying their hatred of outsiders. Even Christianity is filled with hatred for those outside the religion. Accidents of history, not a divine plan, led to the rise of the three Middle Eastern cults to dominance in the West, and then over much of the world. I picked 99.9% because there isn't a 99.9999% option.
How religious family members "support" you.
Paul4747 comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Nicely done ? Saying there's a divine plan means that bad things happen for a reason, so it's somehow supposed to be a comforting thought. In my book that just means God is kind of a dick. A benevolent God, if there were any God, would have a plan that didn't involve so much meaningless pain and suffering.

Have You Saved Someone's Life?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 20, 2018:
On 5 separate occasions, in my work, I've found prisoners in their cell with improvised nooses around their necks. At least twice I'm certain these were staged "suicide attempts" that got out of hand, the guy lost balance and found he couldn't get back up once his weight was on the noose and his air was cut off... the others I don't know for sure. Either way, it leaves you shaky afterwards knowing you were 3 to 5 minutes from finding a dead person. On a happier note: When my daughter was an infant, we had just brought her out of the hospital from what was supposed to be a routine checkup (she was 11 weeks premature and we had taken her home just a couple weeks before, after 8 weeks in intensive care) when her baby monitor went off, as we were loading her into the car seat. She had no pulse and wasn't breathing. My wife started infant CPR at the curb, since she was holding her already. I stayed just long enough to see that she had things under control, then sprinted back in to the reception desk, and, as icy calm as I have ever been in my life (and I will never know how I did that), relayed the information: "infant female in cardiac arrest, at the curb by the front entrance, CPR currently underway by her mother, send an emergency team NOW." Then sprinted back to the car. Less than two minutes later a crash team arrived and took over. I was told later that they had never had anyone deliver emergency information so clearly and effectively, and between my (ex) wife and me we saved our daughter's life. She's going to be a high school freshman this year. :)

This site, is not as other dating sites, for one thing. It doesn't really put people together. That's pretty much based on your initiative. The other factor here is that younger singles (20s and early 30s), in my observations, mostly don't go to a site like this because the name and description don't scream "dating!!" It's mainly a discussion forum with some dating features. So if you're looking for younger people with similar views, maybe you'd have better luck on a different site just specifying "agnostic" or "atheist" as a match preference. But even then you'll have tons of Xians thrown your way. There's no foolproof solution, I'm afraid.

What's my take on it? Criminals doing illegal and horrible things is sort of expected. They're criminals, after all. And desperate people do desperate things, like hiring smugglers to get their kids over a border, fooling themselves into believing they'll be okay. Victimized kids, afraid to ask for help because they expect the authorities to victimize them again if they do... that's a sad and familiar story. And it's been addressed over and over. The nightly news has addressed it. CNN and NPR and PBS and even Fox have addressed it repeatedly. (Although Fox generally blames the kids, but let's not get into that.) What's new, lately, is the government itself taking families apart, instead of human traffickers doing it. I sense your post is some oblique reference to this being a big story, while you think the other is being ignored. Well, it *should be* big news when our government does a heinous thing. What am I gonna do about it? Party hearty in Hell if it turns out he's right, I guess. But consider the track record of making up shit as he goes along, on every topic under the sun. Claimed the Sandy Hook victims were child actors... that Democrat judges erase votes in computer files... that the Charlottesville riots were instigated by liberals (using more actors, dressed up as white supremacists) to create racial hatred. So it's no surprise that he knows jack about atheists as well. What am I really gonna do about it? Ignore this clown.
Overweight shows weakness?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 11, 2018:
I can only add... there's no connection between "moral strength and willpower" and your weight. Be as "strong" as you like, if your body doesn't cooperate, too bad.

I saw a bunch of them in some movies recently. Film doesn't lie. I think the big blond one was... ummm... Thor, maybe? Yeah. So the Norse gods definitely exist.
I look at Preacher Jeffries who is in Dallas.

I assume you mean Robert Jeffress. Well, he seems quite sincere... which makes him no less ignorant and bigoted. As for his ignorance of the Constitution... we can say the very same of Trump, now can't we?

So who's humble already? (Feel free to read that in a Jewish-sounding voice.) I'm a proud atheist. I'll put my atheism up against anyone's theism in 10 rounds, last one standing. Religion! Bah! A lot of fairy tales it is! Who needs it? Nobody, that's who!

Paul4747 comments on Jul 10, 2018:
Spot on. McConnell was frustrated in his stated goal of making Obama a "one-term President". Even in Obama's first term McConnell set a course of doing everything possible to frustrate the Democrat agenda and make it impossible to compile a record of achievements, thus keeping the economy as slow as possible and preparing the field for a Republican victory in 2012. When that failed, he simply, bitterly, refused to accept the will of the people and saw it as his role to frustrate Obama by any means possible. Even G. W. Bush was accorded more respect by the Democrats as to the prerogatives of his office than was Obama by Republicans, who frequently treated Obama with open, public contempt. That should have been no surprise to anyone who paid attention during Clinton's presidency, though, when the Democrat was accused of being a rapist, a murderer, and an incompetent by Republicans on their flagship cable network, night after night. Yet any criticism of a Republican is "liberal bias". And so it goes...

Paul4747 comments on Jul 9, 2018:
A., I'm very sorry for what you went through. Nobody should suffer that. B., the occasional spanking in my childhood did not have that effect on me. Looking back on it, it's rather humorous now. Nor did a couple of occasions years ago have any effect on my child or our relationship. She's about to go into high school this year and we've never been closer. Every situation and every family is different. There's no blanket way to say "spanking is abuse", because it's not. Clearly you were abused. I wasn't. My kid wasn't. Every situation is different.
Just how much do you think religion is holding back fundamental scientific research and advancement?
Paul4747 comments on Jul 9, 2018:
Religion in the US has certainly held back stem cell research. The idea that god is sending signs of the End Times has certainly made Xians resist the truth about climate change. As has the idea that we don't need to care for our planet, because we're appointed rulers over it. Religion worldwide has meant people ignore scientific explanations and cures for disease and even epidemics. Lead to our demise? Well, that's a stretch.
Peaceful Protest....

Paul4747 comments on Jul 8, 2018:
When I got to the line " women should serve churches in 'biblically appropriate ways,'” all that hit me was the story about Lot's daughters getting him drunk and sleeping with him to continue his line... that would be the Southern Baptists to a T.
So I haven't made a post yet but today seen a church sign and felt I needed to.

A professional counselor, not using a 12-step program, would be the one to seek out in my opinion. If I recall, the very first step of the 12 is the "higher power" one. That's essentially admitting a person has no control over themselves and asking an outside, fictional being to run things. As an atheist, I have real issues with that. Behavioral counseling would be the way to go.
