Robecology comments on Dec 15, 2020:
As a demographer I have to disagree. There's little to no drive to " spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats" if one is alon or isolated. The problems rise when our - or any organism's - population density reaches a critical point. The levels frustration fall with the evolution of a working society (n other words, laws, rules, and mores are shared and respected) and rise when that society gets too crowded. It's been proven to be true for plants, insects, almost every living being....isolate them and they strive for cooperation. Crowd them and an instinct stirs that brings up the-black-flag-raising-throat-slitting impulse. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf

#1. As I told my students for 45 years, being scientific, or performing a scientific experiment makes you a "scientist"...it's not necessarily a paid position #2.Scientific thinking is what separates the religious from the unreligious or non-religious. To be considered atheistic or agnostic - it almost demands, and certainly goes hand-in-hand with being scientific.

Robecology comments on Dec 15, 2020:
Yes; I concur; the (Gregorian/Christian) new year's "resolutions" are a bit of a joke. Kudos on deciding to get fit...it's a real challenge to fight hunger, to change one's diet and exerciser routines.. As a health teacher I taught that eating habits were ingrained in us in much the same way as religion was/is...before we could walk and talk our loving parents said certain things, and fed us certain things. When we cried/got emotional. parents have a choice; to ignore, to physically comfort, or to shove food in our mouths. And that food could have been anything from breast milk to milk-duds - from a healthy nutritious snack to a weight-gaining one...and again...all before we could walk and talk. The addiction ran deep...so you deserve a pat on the back for changing - and "resolving" to change it...regardless of the calendar.

It looks like we as a species are lined up for extinction. Most ecologists believe that we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction. Humanity’s impact on nature, they say, is now comparable to the five previous catastrophic events over the past 600 million years, during which up to 95 percent of the planet’s species disappeared. We may very well be. But recent studies have cited extinction rates that are extremely fuzzy and vary wildly. https://e360.yale.edu/features/global_extinction_rates_why_do_estimates_vary_so_wildly

Not surprised. We've reached a critical point in population density...we're now much closer to everyone else - and the germ transmission rate is going up - rapidly - in dense population areas. Only a few decades ago the population was 4 billion...now we're closing in on 8 billion. And we're increasing...births minus deaths...at 150 more per minute. See the data link, below. Viruses need a certain minimal distance to transmit...and we're getting closer to that every minute/hour/day. Viruses go through a lifespan in 8 hours. One will make 4 - which will make 8 - in 24 hours. https://www.worldometers.info

Robecology comments on Dec 10, 2020:
I remember being struck by a cartoon meme - a sort of split screen showing two essentially similar people - One a healthy person - eating right, exercising, sleeping....doing all the right strategies, worlking on having a positive personality; but that person lived in a "Cocoon" of sorts. Then there's the risk-taker...(s)he eats carelessly, exercises in spurts or often not at all, and lives a full and "vivacious" life. Will the "cacoon" dweller/perfect eater/exerciser live longer? Probably. Will their life be "fuller"? - that's the big question. IMO...that's a popular new abbreviation for "In My Opinion" .... We have to strike a balance. Live our lives - focus on healthy...but don't fear the binge...live safely...but don't "cocoon" Trauma bonding? Had to google that one...Im so sad that there's a name for liking to be abused or thinking abusive behavior is in any way desirable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traumatic_bonding

I've already made a cranberry sugar free jelly...I also made mine with Three packets of gelatin...and that proved to be too much gelatin....I'd recommend to try less to get a more "jam" effect; ( three packets might make it too stiff/jelly-like). I hate to admit it; but this horrible behavior by our POTUS has just riled me. Those of us who feel confident in the "American way" are 99% sure Biden will be inaugurated on Jan 20th. But having said that - there's 1% assumption that Trump might make a significant stir. Trump might try one of several things. He might end up totally free, with a pension - or in jail. Here's the options as I see it. He might try an "inauguration party" at Mar a Lago....and though he won't resist moving out of the WH...he will resist several other "holdings" given to him as "commander in Chief" He will possibly claim he's still POTUS. He might be a "flight risk"...and might end up being quietly "detained" He might go through the courts and arrange a stall on the Electoral college tabulation, and/or the Congressional final count. He might end up being declared pardoned of all charges - assuming he just agrees to not press the "fraud" allegations any more. This is a troubling period of time coming up... but again...it's troubling only in a small way. It's embarrassing for us as Americans that he's fighting this. It's sad for us that we had to do so many mail-in ballots. It's sad that the resistance to mailing ballots. to minority voting, and to getting properly registered to vote was such a struggle. And finally...I have to add...that it's frustrating for many of us to tolerate the win for "centrist" Biden....many of us were hoping for Bernie. Sorry - had to rant. And I don't feel much better...but thanks for giving me the platform!

NBD. I've been following the "comet origin" theories closely. There's now evidence that most of the DNA on our planet started on another one - or two = or more. Apparently there might have been a world that formed in the "goldilocks zone" (just far enough from the sun to allow liquid water to form) prior to earth... It formed...formed oceans....formed life....then exploded. The oceans flash froze....but stayed in orbit around the sun. That explains the abundance of icy comets that rained down on early earth... So we might have been "innoculated" with DNA and simple life forms that started on another planet (Octopi have nearly 50% unexplainable, unmatchable DNA). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formation_and_evolution_of_the_Solar_System

Read this, please; BTW this was published in July of this year... https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02244-1 "Chinese companies are at the forefront of global efforts to create a vaccine for the coronavirus, with more than half a dozen candidates in clinical development. Last week, Tianjin-based CanSino Biologics published results1 from an early-stage clinical trial showing that its vaccine is safe and can trigger an immune response."

Kind of racist. We've had Chinese food restaurants in America long before the first fast food hamburger or chicken prep came out. Let's note poke fun at the "Fortune cookie" or the broken english of the Chinese Americans... Who can forget this scene from "A Christmas story" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMYr_sXrpjU
do any one think naming a group of people that are related to each other can bring discrimination ...
Robecology comments on Nov 16, 2020:
A poll on a small social media page won't do a thing to "stop naming groups". What we need to do is 1. Slow down our growth. It's the population density that creates these discriminations. We are presently growing at 150 more births, than deaths, per minute. https://www.worldometers.info 2. Learn tolerance.Teach tolerance. We have to strive to be better, to be more cooperative with eachother...or we will go extinct. Soon.https://www.tolerance.org

Robecology comments on Nov 16, 2020:
I learned, some 50+ years ago..that the root problem that faces humanity is our uncontrollable desire to breed. But it makes us so much more like every other biological being. We've had "death control" (sanitation, medicine) for centuries....yet "birth control" is still less than 100 years old. We are still growing far too fast...the production and recycling of resources cannot keep up. Malthus said it well over 200 years ago..."as the quantity of any life form (in any given area) increases, the quality of life decreases. More and more, fight harder and harder, for less and less. Here's the article I read in '62 that changed my life; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf and here's the data on our present growth rate; 150 more births than deaths, per minute. https://www.worldometers.info

I'm an early-to-bed/early-to-rise kinda person....I get at least 8 hours...but that's only been since retirement. Us teachers had to be up by 5:30 to make a 7 AM school start....
Happy Friday! What is the last thing you do before sleep?

I haven't gone to a cpap machine yet...but I do keep some nasal decongestant handy. I alternate days of usage to avoid "addiction"...but I seem to breathe better when I use it.

Nice memes; but unless we get our out-of-control population growth in check...we're looking at extinction. If you think COvID19 was serious, you 'ain't seen nothin' yet". The UN gives us about 10 more years to get it- and the resulting burning of fuels - under control...or the heat will grow faster - and be irreversible. NBD...we go extinct - reset the evolutionary clock back a few million years. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/08/global-warming-must-not-exceed-15c-warns-landmark-un-report regarding data of our growth; it's a proven fact; the more crowded we get the more -hostile -greedy -self-indulgent -psychotic we become. Malthus said....over 200 years ago (1812) "As the quantity of life increases the quality of life decreases". When I read this in '62 I decided to focus on demography; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf Oh...and how fast are we increasing?
