Some thoughts on broadening the appeal of Agnostic.
Robecology comments on Nov 7, 2020:
@Admin I often share my "promote" link on Facebook....and the comments I hear most - especially from the "youth" - is that they don't want to commit to the "Agnostic" label just yet. All the stronger reason for you to look in to changing the domain name.... from "Agnostic dot com" to "freethinker" or "freethought" or Freeminded dot com. I know that would mean a lot of changes...even your T shirt lettering...but it's a much more "21st century" term.

These biased posts that you've made lately, @Hages surprise me. I'd have expected Trump pre and post...not Biden with his running mate. Not sure what you're suggesting with this....but it's clearly not the usually high standard of post you present.

Robecology comments on Nov 6, 2020:
How about "freethinker" or Freethinking, or Freethought dot com? The "Freethinkers" had a subtle message when the acquired the name. Everyone know it was agnosticism/atheism.....but the name - established as a group over 400 years ago - implied the "taboo" thinking of being free of religious dogma. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_thought

Robecology comments on Nov 6, 2020:
Here's the thing. America rewards greed. America - particularly the #religulous - encourage male dominance. America has a root...an inner soul, if you will...of racism, and xenophobia. We've become known for becoming haters for the current class, or group, or general source, of immigrants. And finally - there's a large group of folk who've made their money supporting the #1 destroyer of the environment...fossil fuel burning. I call them the FFC...the tens of millions who get rich through the Fossil Fuel Consortium...everyone from gas station owners to car dealerships. So they're successful - they make good $$$...and they support an arrogant, racist, sexually aggressive person as a leader. And there's tens - if not hundreds - of millions of them. Mostly in America. Land of the Greedy.

Yep...13 years So it's not what "you find acceptable" it's what works for the both of you. People will talk when there's an extreme difference....but let them talk. If you let their "acceptance" or "non-acceptance" bother you - then you've missed my point.

What's the phrase....if you're not living then you're getting ready to die? I'm not ready yet.
Happy Tuesday Everyone! What does the scientific method mean to you?
Robecology comments on Nov 3, 2020:
Oh...boy. This is a favorite topic of mine! As a 45 year retired science teacher....and Coordinator for many a "Science Fair"....this to me is a great question!! My reply... #1. If you use the S.M. diligently, you are, in fact, being a scientist - whether you're being paid or not. #2. Thus a true scientist isn't necessarily a paid profession or position. The best scientists are hired...many do their work for the pleasure of the research, or because it's required for their degree. #3. The most important part of the S.M. is the relevancy. Is the S.M. that you're applying important? I've had students try to establish theories that explain why a shower curtain moved in a shower - or why their balls itched. Not relevant...well...sort of not....but you get what I'm saying (I hope). #4. The second most important part of the S.M. is its' repeatability. If you did the experiment and made the steps so clear that anyone can also run the same experiment...then you're being a good scientist, sticking carefully to the S.M. #5. A third important part of the S.M. is your "control". That's not what you think it is. It's a parallel experiment run to compare your experiment. Best example; washing something. You want to test how well one kind of soap/detergent works. Your "control" test must be with No soap/detergent...run for comparison. That's your "control". #6. A fourth important part of the S.M. is your "presentation" or "report" or "thesis". Remember the 6 C's. Be clear. Be colorful. Be charming. Be clever. Be careful Be creative. Here's a chart I often shared with my students.
And for those Agnostic dot com members that are still "on the fence".
Robecology comments on Nov 3, 2020:
Let me respond in general about the term "fence sitter" #1. I won't respond specifically to name callers like @Paddypereira and if you continue the rude path you'll be blocked. #2. As you see in the comments below - there's many who are still "believers" - I consider those who still "have faith" in a god to be "fence sitters" #3 Bill Maher is my favorite blunt, in-your-face anti-religion spokesperson for me. If you want to debate...bring facts...not name calling or ad hominem attacks. Otherwise you'll not only be ignored, you'll be blocked.

What Is The Metabolism-First Hypothesis For The Origin Of life? - YouTube
Robecology comments on Oct 31, 2020:
Up until a few years ago, I accepted the "Co-acervates" theory that organic molecules arose on earth in the early hot seas. Then deep ocean life evolving without light came to my attention. Then the abundance of mostly H2O comets in our solar system. Then the ancient histories of Venus and Mars that suggests that they once harbored oceans and moderate temps....thus possibly life. The fact that cellular metabolism is so complex made it hard to accept that life started on earth. But this later knowledge that I acquired made it more logical. The Comets that filled our primordial oceans could have already been seeded with organic molecules that started their evolution hundreds of millions - if not billions - of years before earth formed.
I found this interesting so I thought I would share it here.
Robecology comments on Oct 31, 2020:
I'm as "green" as they get; With an Avatar like @Robecology you can expect that. But I read the article. And - no...I won't be voting green. Kevn Zeese (since passed away) and Virginia Rodino wrote the piece - and I found no "green" arguments for their candidates...Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker....only trash-talking of both Biden and Trump. I almost stopped reading when I read this obviously unfounded comment; "That is a better alternative than voting for what we do not want, i.e. “a certifiable, lying, murdering war criminal” and a racist mass incarcerator, and getting it. Certifiable? Hmmmm...maybe she and he will elaborate? OK...I continued to read. "voting for Biden is immoral in the current electoral reality"...OK...can you tell us why? Sad to say...they didn't. In my opinion, Biden is far more "green" than Trump. Trump's been pretty "anti-green". Bernie would have pushed a green agenda harder...but to say either one of them was "a certifiable, lying, murdering war criminal” and a racist mass incarcerator" is just too extreme, to me. .They go on to say - "Trump is the worst president in our lifetimes" a good general truth but lots of name calling without documentation bothers me. Then they elaborated about the backgrounds of the candidates....I salivated...did they ever pioneer any "green" proposals, I was hoping to read? No they did not. So why are you even labeling yourself the "Green Party"? I smell a scam. A way to get money. I don't smell anything like plant green. Green money, maybe? I dug this up for you @gsiamne. @azzow2 #1. No you won't have to buy a new car, nor an E.V. (electric vehicle)...although they're getting cheaper, and easier to fix and run all the time. It's the smarter choice; and if you chose a Tesla, I can offer you a discount. Go to www.tesla.com and look them over. Test drive one. Dare ya. #2. We're dangerously close to extinction. This may sound extreme; but the science is in...it's fact-based. Joe was quoting scientists..we are only a few years away from what's described as "runaway/irreversible climate warming"....good for dinosaurs/reptiles, not for humans and most mammals. If you're in the A.C. business you're about to see a boom. #3.Trump's hated. By many. What's hate? it's when you used to be loved...then the alleged lover deceived you, lied to you, cheated you so much...that you ended up hating him/her. The groans you spoke of will have a real large body of people collectively groaning. He's lied...repeatedly. He's a cheater, a grifter, a scammer. I sure hope you see that. #4.Joe's not my first choice. I'd prefer Bernie; but Joe's shown some flexibility. He's shown a lot of decency. I hope you give him a chance....he's not a great choice....and his "green plan" is a centrist/modest POV that most of us say won't be enough to save us....but it might....so I hope you give him a shot. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/24/joe-biden-climate-change-is-number-one-issue-facing-humanity.html

The more crowded it gets...the harder it becomes to "love one another". The logic is simple; more and more ars struggling for less and less. It's been proven scientifically....crowding stresses us. makes us less "loving", more greedy, more hostile. We're growing...by 150 more per minute. 220,000 more per day. 1.5 million per week. 80 million per year. So this is what information I gathered from last night's post.
Robecology comments on Oct 21, 2020:
@azzow2. It's a matter of honesty and consistency. Biden's made mistakes....he's most famous for helping Clarence Thomas get to the SCOTUS bench despite official testifying by repressing, overtalking, and generally making Anita Hill's life difficult. She testified that Thomas repeatedly approached her for sex and made many sexual "innuendos" - but thanks to Biden, Thomas got his SCOTUS appointment. He's since apologized to Anita Hill and has said he's regretted the decision to push Thomas, and repress Hill. (see link, below). Biden's also been made famous for the touchy-feely ads that show him being "inappropriate" with women and young girls. But Biden's apologized to Hill. And the touchy-feely thing is nothing compared to Trump's "grab her by the P...." remarks...as well as his payments to cover up affairs he's had....while married. Trump also allegedly, with Jeffery Epstein, raped a 13 year old...then paid her off. 15 other women have allegedly been "mishandled" by him; https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/11/3/13501364/trump-rape-13-year-old-lawsuit-katie-johnson-allegation Joe's showing a lot more respect for science. He's like a "pseudo-Catholic"...you know - the ones who go to church and pray...but use birth control, etc. Trump on the other hand has made so many wrong turns...especially regarding this COVID19 thing. And he's still making them...going to states with rapidly growing cases and declaring "it's over". And I'm sure you've heard about his disrespect for Fauci...while hiring this pretend doctor who supports "herd immunity" (Trump even called it "herd mentaility"...he's got to be the dumbest President we've ever had. Biden has made mistakes...but he's changing direction. He respects science. and he knows how to apologize; https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/us/politics/joe-biden-anita-hill.html

Robecology comments on Oct 20, 2020:
It does tend to be generational....if you had a loving, caring dad...you tend to become the same... I did. I considered myself above average in the child-nurturing area...and now my son seems to be "following in my footsteps"... But - scientific research shows that the "nurturing father" is a relatively new phenomenon....and not commonly "passed on" The view that the male of our species is not naturally nurturing of his young is widely accepted by scholars who have delved into the subject of fathering. Most recently, David Blankenhorn has stated: ...fatherhood, much more than motherhood, is a cultural invention. Its meaning for the individual man is shaped less by biology than by a cultural script or story - a societal code that guides, and at times pressures, him into certain ways of acting and of understanding himself as a man. https://www.naturalchild.org/articles/james_kimmel/fathering.html

Look at the winter weather over your area in the past few months/years to see why. What it boils down to is "climate shift" - caused by global warming - caused by the growing population. We're growing at 150 more births than deaths, per minute. 220,000 per day. 1,500,000 more per week 80 million per year. But wildlife is going extinct at the rate unheard of ever since we started noticing. Forests are disappearing at the rate of acres per minute. Blacktop/concrete/irreversible land covering for human occupation is happening at acres per minute. The earth isn't growing. We're getting better and more efficient at food sharing....so there is a slow reduction of starvation deaths - for now. But diseases and their vectors are getting stronger and tougher ever minute. And pollution is growing at a faster, and faster rate. And we have the technology - the knowhow - the wisdom to control this growth. We just need to connect the dots...and slow down our growth - faster, sooner....or it might be too late for us. Many are saying it is....in fact...too late to reverse global warming/climate change. But resetting the evolutionary clock might be good for our planet. Not good for us...but good for the planet. https://www.worldometers.info

Did everyone remember to eat moldy cheese on this moldy cheese holiday?
Robecology comments on Oct 13, 2020:
Most cheeses...if not all...need some kind of mold to help them form in to the state they're in! When I see some throw away "moldy cheese" I feel sad/sorry for them....they don't realize that that particular chunk is finally becoming tasty! A challenge; buy some cheese that has the mold obviously in it...say a Gorgonzola or a Blue ( have you priced them lately? $10 or more per pound!) - let it get to room temp - then put a thin slice - mold included - on your tongue. Savor it. Mold is what gives cheese it's "cheesy-ness! https://pressofatlanticcity.com/attheshore/events/weekly-wacky-holiday-national-moldy-cheese-day/article_f0b62179-14a6-5182-ba44-692960add5b3.html

"Islam is the greatest force for evil in the world today" - Richard Dawkins
Robecology comments on Oct 13, 2020:
I concur with @Freedompath....I'm not sure that there even exists a "force for evil"....if you've studied demography and population density's effect on people, it explains why some just act in ways that are loosely defined as "evil"....but biology allows these behaviors - and it tends to control the overpopulationing of any crowded species. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1501789/pdf/califmed00143-0080.pdf

I tried "Harry's"....decent, competitively priced...mail order or now available at most stores....but I coudln't put down my "trac 2" shavers. I had purchases one heavy, balanced metal one...then another...years ago....and they've worked perfectly. Blame it on a great close-out sale of literally hundreds of blade heads for under $10... (wow...I just price checked....they're now $24) and I was "hooked". Now I keep one shaver in one Bath and the other one in the other bath - I try to use both; but the old "trac II's are actually a slight preference...slightly closer slightly smoother.

Garlic, ginger, Oregano, Turmeric, and when it's pumpkin pie season....fresh nutmeg and cinnamon scores with me. Of all the combo seasonings, there's two that stand out to me the McCormick "smokehouse" group and "Everglades" seasoning. Badia does a nice "Seasoning-complete" for those on a budget...

Pandemic Question
Robecology comments on Oct 7, 2020:
It's been tough. The fridge is too close by. The only time i get out is to go food shopping. All the gyms are closed. Still...I got an hour's worth of biking in today (good sweat) and I can swim in the relatively uncrowded (off season, for now) swimming pool out back. Trying hard; it's not easy!!
Being older a lot of us live with pain.
Robecology comments on Oct 7, 2020:
@azzow2 It's called aging. "Pushing through the pain" is the "manly" thing to do...but scientists say that's just not wise...it'll speed up the joint break-down. Same with overdoing the pain meds. Some suggest (and I've followed this advice) surgery - I got a hip replaced....and the doc said I was guilty of "pushing past the pain" too long....which only accelerated the decomposition of the joint. But....having said that; I now am pain free - in my hips. Now I'm at a crossroad about a knee....and at 75 years and decent fitness - I'm tossed about surgery. A.Tolerate it? ("push through the pain") B.Pain meds? C.Cartilage/bone/anti-inflammatory supplements? D. Surgery? Your advice here is welcome! How about a simple A, B,C, or D recommendation?
Just going to leave these here!😂😂😂

Good morning, and Happy Tuesday! How much time do you spend in front of a screen each week?
Robecology comments on Oct 6, 2020:
We have come to call the TV the "idiot box" before it became a flat screen. Now the laptop and desktop are getting "picked on". I do spend almost the entire day on my laptop. I rarely turn on the TV. But the laptop is inter-acting with people....the TV...no interaction. So I don't call my nearly full day on the laptop -ridiculous. I call it almost essential in this time of isolation and quarantine. Thoughts? Please feel free to contradict....
