he liked choc ice cream, but complained the chocolate melted in his fingers and sometimes got chocolate on his clothes - he asked the manufacturer if they could put the choc ice on a stick... they listened --- and that is how the magnum lolly came to be. he was Ivanhoe the knight in shining armour from my childhood, then the Saint who righted wrongs and always helped the beautiful maiden ... he was one of those who influenced kids toward a moral view of the world, where the good guy wins and the bad guy ends up in jail. He was an icon.
Anyone else roast their own coffee from green coffee beans?
ShadowAmicus comments on May 2, 2019:
There is a local tea and coffee specialist who will roast to order for regulars like me - but his regular stock is always over 200 choices of coffee types / blends / roasts. He does tastings with the same beans, or blend of beans roasted for different times at a range of temperatures and the feedback helps them develop some new products and us to get more involved in finding exactly the choice we want

But the moralistic story is that god saved the goodies and drowned the baddies - so you have to be good because god is always watching and knows all the bad stuff you do. When you convince people of that you have control over social norms like the ten commandments against, killing, fucking your neighbours wife, theft, etc ... so there is some fundamental benefit in the general ideas of religion. Personally - I manage my adherence to morality without the oversight of a god ...... and my neighbours wife was in an unhappy marriage and needed cheering up ... quite often ... didn't turn out well

ShadowAmicus comments on May 1, 2019:
I was sent to church every Sunday as a child (so parents could have a few hours 'alone'). When I was 7 or 8 the vicar put out the usual plea for more money and I realised he was driving a big rover car, while most people walked, bicycled or caught a bus - that was when I started questioning morality of the church. Which led me to question war, poverty and so much more.

Given that life in itself is meaningless, what do we have in mind when we talk about the "meaning ...
ShadowAmicus comments on May 1, 2019:
Meaning - what meaning. This planet we call earth is just a dust speck in the universe and each and every one of us is just an assemblage of atoms that form a human. Whether you are rich or poor, find a cure for cancer, or do nothing more than exist as a beer and pizza processing plant is irrelevant to the rest of the universe. So each day find something to smile and laugh about, something to make the adrenalin pump, and enjoy whatever you can about being alive One day you will cease to function and become a lump of meat. Your atoms will begin to recycle into other forms of life and whatever you were is forgotten.
Seems accurate.

TRIGGER WARNING : “Trans-talk” : TRANS-WOMEN ARE NOT WOMEN.
ShadowAmicus comments on Apr 28, 2019:
I DON'T CARE - what transgender issues? I go back to the Trojans, who practised institutional bisexualism or the Sodomites - the clue is in the name - both groups feared as the greatest fighters of their era - so please don't try and tell us that homosexuals are not men, or that women are weak and feeble and need a man to care for them. If a man feels compelled to have his penis surgically remodelled into a vagina - Not a problem - the same goes for any women wanting her vagina turned inside out to make a penis - but surgery only changes external physical attributes, not the founding DNA or genetics. So I may be simplistic in the view that If you were born with a penis you are a man and if a vagina, you are a woman - and if transgender by surgical modification you must compete against the gender you were born - or accept that missing out on competitive sports is the additional cost of the operation.

ShadowAmicus comments on Apr 28, 2019:
The aim of education should be teaching to use a brain, to assimilate and analyse information, to construct your own argument in support of an idea, and to dissect the arguments put forward by others, which allows someone to develop independent informed opinion - but as leaders of society need sheep to follow their alloted pathway through life the last thing they will allow the masses is informed independent thought. Far better to provide them with palliative tv, beer, and shiny baubles.
The problem with religion [youtu.be]
ShadowAmicus comments on Apr 28, 2019:
School sports teams, armed forces, religions are all manifestations of the same divisive dogms of tribalism. From the beginning of 'my school is better at **** than your school' through to 'my army is bigger better and badder than your army' or 'my god is all powerful and will destroy your god' - all are tribes that humans flock to join. The problems start with what is taught to children, that their tribe is different and better than other tribes. This teaching is only a block laid on a foundation stone of human evolution in that being part of a tribe gives an individual a greater chance of survival - useful when fending off sabre toothed tigers, less so when living alongside other tribes of humans.

There are quite a few turbines sited around where I live; I can't see them, but am not a fan purely on the grounds of the financial cost. A local farmer was paid for a 50 year lease on his land and bought himself a new Porsche 4x4 on the first years payment - far more cash than would have been the profit on crops. Not a problem if the energy company is paying, but the whole project is heavily subsidised by the government with mine and other taxpayers money. Since the wind in this area is unpredictable the turbines often stand idle due to no, or too strong a wind, and a similar argument can be applied to solar power, as the sun often refuses to shine. The turbines have a relatively short lifespan, as does any new technology, and I question what happens when the end of their useful life comes. My bet is that each site will be owned by a small independent company which will be bankrupted at the start of decommissioning, again leaving the costs with the taxpayers. Hydroelectric schemes are much more reliable systems, well proven and one installation can provide vastly more power than several acres f wind turbines, while also acting as water reservoirs and public amenities

Most political punditry is saying Trump will likely win reelection in 2020.
ShadowAmicus comments on Apr 25, 2019:
I would put trump at odds on winner... every democrat I speak with says Trump is horrible, despicable, etc and I fully agree with the assessment - but not one has actually disected his policies or told me how bad a job he is doing. He tweets, or stands up and says, what he thinks in undiplomatic language and it seems to work for him across a large section of voters. He has made inroads on the 3 problem areas mentioned, and a start with North Korea - which few previous presidents have effectively tackled. In the past I have worked with and for a lot of leaders - those who could drive projects forward were absolute bastards - but very effective at getting results. Trump is like them. Any President may or may not be liked, but his job is to get things done - preferably the things he said he would do once elected. Trump seems to be accomplishing this.
Have you ever been overcome by emotion in a professional setting?
ShadowAmicus comments on Apr 25, 2019:
I run a boarding kennels, and many of the dogs and cats that stay here are as much personal friends as some owners, so it does get emotional quite often Tuesday 8.15am I had to say goodbye to a GSD patrol dog, who has been a favoutite, but with age had developed spinal and hip problems that were causing him pain - he was put to sleep in the arms of his handler later that day. Tuesday 4pm had to take two little terriers home to see their mum, who I have known for years, and was in bed with pneumonia. She wanted to see the dogs, and me, before the ambulance took her to hospital. The dogs jumped onto the bed and cuddled, I gave her a hug and told her not to worry about the dogs and to call me when she got home - she smiled and I think she knew that wasn't going to happen. She died the following morning. That is just a day, not normal, not exceptional - and yes it does get very emotional sometimes
