Is love meaningless?
Sofabeast comments on Feb 15, 2019:
Scientifically speaking, what love is exactly remains unknown. What is supported by investigation is that there is a broad panoply of effects which are categorised under the label of love. Attraction whether familial, sexual-sensual, emotional or physical produces reactions that can last a lifetime. Is it meaningless? It has to be an evolutionary adaption, so no, it must have meaning which is possible we interpret in a subjective way. I have been, and really still am deeply in love with my late wife. As for Romeo & Juliet, yes they were stupid. There were other options available, and their characters would have been Catholic, and thus, gone to hell. At we know that bit is wobble nonsense! At the moment, it is all subjective.

How important is age difference to you. Either older, younger or similar?
Sofabeast comments on Feb 13, 2019:
In the meantime, although I find much younger women beautiful, I no longer find them attractive in the way I used to. Perhaps I see them more as being my daughter's friends, even though most don't know her at all. Right now I'm in a state of confusion as to choosing the right age difference. At least with ladies of similar or older age, I don't find a problem.

Eyes.... What is it about a person's eyes that you like / dislike?

The book was written by men, and sometime after the events. Then translated into lots of different languages with changes as understanding of dead languages becomes ever uncertain. Then consider the expanse of space. "If you think it's a long way to the shops, that's nothing compared to space" (Adams, D. Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy). What if God is busy with other creations? There are over seven-thousand million humans, he's got to be quite busy making interconnected plans for each and every one of us. Then why make so many of his children atheist? What about all those humans who died before God was invented? Did they get to heaven? Bringing new life into the world, then stamping it out again and all at faster than light speeds! Imagine the millions who are praying to him every moment of the day, no wonder he never answers!

How do you feel about assisted suicide at the end of your journey in this life.
Sofabeast comments on Feb 4, 2019:
I am in favour of it. However we must be careful about its use and abuse. Firstly, our life belongs to us, and therefore cannot belong to another person or society. Secondly, having seen this from my fathers perspective and that of my wife, who both died at the end of illnesses. He had had his time and wanted to go on his terms with family and friends around him having a good laugh, his music and probably a drink or five too. Instead he had to starve himself to death, waiting for his body to finally fail. Due to commitments I couldn't be with him at the end, I was nursing my wife through chemotherapy a 1000km north. So that wasn't nice for me or him. Then with my wife, she asked me some years before her untimely death to 'finish her' when the time came. I refused, but at her end, she changed her mind and wanted to live, she didn't want to leave me. Instead the NHS had to dehydrate her to death. She passed during the early hours of a Sunday, but her cognitive functions ceased on a Thursday afternoon. Just the last part of her brain stem operating the automatic functions. As a veterinary surgeon, she had put to sleep many 'furry family members' when their time came, she understood that at that point, it only serves to cause pain to family and friends by keeping a dead body alive. Choice and dignity.
Lest we forget the Cold War Those of us who lived through the Cold War remember what it was like ...
Sofabeast comments on Feb 3, 2019:
The Oligarchs existed before the fall of Soviet Communism, the new world merely allowed them to become open about it and to never fear being shot by the state. Today they just have to bribe their way out of it. If managed properly, Russia would become the premiere superpower and economy. But as always the elite farm the proletariat like mushroom - keep them in the dark and feed them shit. Putin's Russia is currently in a precarious state. What it needs is another Cold War to boost their failing economy. And someone just stupid enough to be easily made to think they doing the right thing. And Trump is more than stupid enough for that role. Russia will need to borrow money to rebuild its Nuclear arsenal so that the world remains at peace. Now there is threat of war, that will happen. As they re-arm. The USA will need to do the same. Both arms dealers will make money and the world can tremble for a few decades just in case it gets out of hand. Putin can play his hand that Trump won't live long enough or remain in power to deploy his new toys and whoever follows him will be stuck on course. This buys Russia time, and like chess they are in it for the long game.
Lest we forget the Cold War Those of us who lived through the Cold War remember what it was like ...
Sofabeast comments on Feb 2, 2019:
I was a back-room 'Cold-Warrior' towards the end of the Cold War era. I knew full well that if shit hit the fan, my call up papers were in the office safe. Next stop BAOR (British Army of the Rhine) and short haircut and some camouflaged clothes followed by a Soviet PoW camp if I'm lucky! If I stayed where I was, I'd be turned into a black shadow on the floor as the Rooskies nuked where I worked. To be serious, once the INF agreement is out of the way, then we could descend into a real shooting war as future tempers become frayed leading to someone doing something stupid. Perhaps we should also follow the power and money. Who stands to benefit from this? Was Trump just doing his Russian masters bidding? Could Trump have simply been out-manoeuvred by the far more skilled Russians, causing him the pull out thus, making the USA the bad guys? What this can do, is give Putin an excuse to carry out power grabs along his border states by political intervention and then direct invasion once a destabilisation of the EU has happened following Brexit.

Sofabeast comments on Jan 29, 2019:
Churchill made decisions based on his knowledge and social attitudes prevailing at the time. Right or wrong, they were made. Gallipoli was a military failure for a myriad of reasons. It was his idea, but he didn't plan the detail which ultimately let the adventure down. He talked SHAEF into an invasion of the soft underbelly of Italy during WWII, which proved a "tough old gut". He diverted food for an already starving population in region of India, (which caused at least a million deaths) to ensure Allied troops were fed and ready to defeat the Axis powers. He was an Imperialist, but then in 1939 the British Empire was the worlds No1 superpower. So, should we label him a criminal against humanity? It was his drive which saved the world from fascist domination. At this moment in time, it is fashionable to beat down old heroes and label them as evil, based on 'snowflake' criteria and values, so Piers Morgan has a point. But Mr Greer shouldn't be insulted in such a manner. People in power do some questionable acts.. For the Americans, George Washington carried out war crimes when he was a British officer and again as General of the Continental Forces. Judging the past with the values of today isn't easy. Study the evidence, and make up your own mind based on the evidence, not your emotions. As for Mr Morgan, the evidence is he is a fat, flabby wanker

Sofabeast comments on Jan 20, 2019:
Let us ask, What is rape culture? I have been brought up not to do or think rape is a good or normal act. All of the men I know or have known personally think this way too. Ergo, no rape culture where I live (United Kingdom). That said, the way that the mobile phone culture is evolving, sexual interaction at first meeting through words and pictures display a very direct sexuality becoming the the social norm. I for one, have never sexted or dick picted... yet! That said, I used to write erotic letters to my now late wife and she with me. These were thoughts of love and sex put into words using stories in effect. They were not 'wanna fuck' followed by a sexual image. However, talking with some of the young lasses at work on this very subject. They all replied that they expect sexting and dickpix. Partly because if you are in a nightclub, you may be unable to hear them, then there is gathering a choice of the available young men vying for their charms for the evening. None of this activity was perceived as at all 'rappie' to use their words. A tad shocking for us old-uns who had to go out and chat or be chatted up when I and the other mature ladies who were involved in the conversation were last single.
Do you think that Mrs May's mess has its roots in her Christian upbringing?
Sofabeast comments on Jan 17, 2019:
We are all products of our socialisation process, which can go some way to answer why she never seems able to interact deeply with human beings. The lady's not for 'understanding' should be her catchphrase. Following her massive defeat on Brexit and close run thing on Confidence, She should have stepped down as PM. She has demonstrated that failure is always her main option. At last she seems to be attempting what should have been done at the start - involving all the other parties, but even then she still seems to be preaching and not listening. I hate to say it but, stupid woman!

Sofabeast comments on Dec 27, 2018:
Humans have been attempting to quantify the 'soul' for thousands of years. Perhaps it is the internal observance of self. The amassed wisdom of the ages still has not been able to say exactly what it is. When we die, what happens to the self? Is it gone? Changed into what? I felt that the 'soul' of my beloved wife departed about two and half days before her body gave out, but then I wasn't thinking clearly At the opposite end, where does it come from? My late wife said she felt 'the soul' appear in our daughter at about twelve weeks into pregnancy. Is that the point where there is enough neural activity to support some sort of self conscience? Let's be honest, we don't know. We each have a subjective view of ourselves.

We will need an early general election after we either Brexit or suddenly remain. Then we can rebuild Cabinet consensus government. It will be beyond my lifetime before the debacle sorts itself out. Cameron has split to people of the UK and a 'Civil War' has happened. The drive for Scottish independence may well win out (I met Alec Salmond in my local Co Op the other weekend when he was buying up the cheap deals, and blue tracksuit bottoms with shabby shoes how the powerful have fallen) should they win, it will be 'Call me Dave's' fault. Of course if another referendum is called and it goes to remain, even with a decent majority then the divide is still going to be there. I watched a news item from Germany today. Their take is the UK must stay in or else sink. If we leave, then the crash on the pound will cripple our ability to import goods, kill the NHS and cause world wide recession.

Sofabeast comments on Dec 19, 2018:
Our basic default is bi-sexual. Most of us will never act on this, as we tend to be strongly socialised out of those feelings from an early age to the point of becoming heterosexual. So try not to worry, and be happy whether you find love with a man or woman, or maybe both.
So, I have a question on which I would like to hear other's thoughts.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 19, 2018:
When I get time, I'd like to discuss this more deeply. I'm a student of social sciences, and this will come up as part of my curriculum. As I'm short of time right now. I'll put it this way. It is 'natural' but not nice, not acceptable. We are social animals who live by rules, norms, qualities and traditions. However, what is pedophilia exactly? In the UK it is sex with a person under 16. But in some countries the age of consent is 14. So would two consenting 15 year old partners who have sex abroad come back as pedophiles? Then there is the truly evil aspect where adults have sex with children. As animals we'll screw anything, but as I have said, we have rules. And they change. If you watch Game of Thrones you will see that teenagers are wed and bed reflecting the social norms of medieval Europe and the Middle East. But not children. Right, back to the last assessment before Wintermass

Alcohol - must have whisky in my Christmas morning tea, it's been a tradition in my family since 1915, Pressies, fry up breakfast, start Christmas dinner preparations, the three Ss, eat chocolates, drink, play music, fiddle with pressies, finish cooking dinner (big bit of dead cow), eat, drink pile up washing up, sleep, snore, fart, TV, eat more food and drink maybe stare at washing up momentarily, go to bed, sleep, snore and more farting. With saddened melancholy, miss my late wifes horrendous brussel sprout Christmas day farts.
The world today is changing, and sometimes, not in a positive way.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 5, 2018:
Today we have the technology to become world famous for no reason. The cult of fame has almost certainly been around for at least 4.5 million years.
Next time a religious person approach you and try to talk about God, do this.

And finish with... "My name, oh yes, Malak Al Mawt, but you may know me better as Azrael".
Guns I would like to hear thoughts from others in this group on their feelings about guns and gun ...
Sofabeast comments on Dec 4, 2018:
Who do ordinary Americans need protecting from? I hear comments on the subject stating for home protection or oppressive government, then America votes in an oppressive POTUS45, yet doesn't turn their guns on him? The USA is a modern country with large wild areas. In most American cities you're unlikely to be attacked by bears or cougars unless they happen to be large hairy gay men or mature ladies! You have pretty good police forces, the worlds most powerful military. So why should every citizen demand guns? With modern supermarkets, people no longer really need to hunt, just pop down the shops! I'll stop there. If you have guns, be responsible, be safe and have fun with them.
I am 48.

I see where you are coming from. The pickiness works both ways, I've had zero interest since I 'came on the market'.

Vegans may soon get same anti-discrimination rights as religious people.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 3, 2018:
It is an interesting situation for the UK government to debate. If people who have made dietary choices for their lifestyle should this have legal protection? If they do achieve this, then because it is a philosophical approach to dinner, could others have legal protection too? I am a Support Worker for Adults with Special Needs, the people who I support can choose what food they want to eat, but a Vegan employee may decide not to feed them unless they eat Vegan food. This removes the human right of choice, so who is right here?
There has been some talk on here about unsolicited dick pictures.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 3, 2018:
If I've got it right, this is a dating and social site for like minded people. Now if I went out dating, even in my kilt, I would consider it socially unacceptable to wave my willy around without being expressly asked by the lady I was with and not in public. Thus, I don't think it is acceptable to post penis pictures, or breasts, bums and vaginas. If people want to post such pictures, then join a sex site, although I am unaware if there happens to be any for Atheists and Agnostics.

Was there a bird big enough to do that in Europe at that time?

Equality or not
Sofabeast comments on Dec 3, 2018:
If the Alt-right get their way, then no. I had a long conversation during a night shift about this. Trying to enlighten a fellow worker as to the reasons behind 'gender-bending' (not my words). I tried to use science and reason. I think I made positive progress, but it will take more words. It did with me, but it worked and I'm better now. Gender dysphoria is a medical fact (DSM-5 p451-459). There are several types of dysphoria. Some of which have been recognised outwith the Christian view on the world by many different cultures for thousands of years. Basically, Gender is a Social construct. There are many Psycho-sociological studies to support this. Sex is Biological and there are four of those! In order Female (we all start out as female), Male, Pseudo Hermaphrodite (usually presents as female changing to male during puberty) and Hermaphrodite (extremely rare).
I'm always baffled by Christians who think just because we don't believe in God that we must worship...
Sofabeast comments on Dec 2, 2018:
I have written at some length about Satan's strategy around deliberately loosing a violin to a Georgian Redneck. And how this is used to repress the ignorant masses through line dancing. Even in Scotland I have encountered Christians who believe that if you are not with them, you must worship the devil. And that includes Catholics, Muslims, Bhuddists, Jews, Zoroastrians and of course Atheists. At least another 4196 other religions available, some of whom also have one and only true gods!

How young is too young for a tattoo?
Sofabeast comments on Dec 2, 2018:
Tattoos are a major cultural activity. At eighteen in the developed world a person is an adult. They can drink, have sex, get married, pay tax, vote, run for parliament, fight in a war, got grown up prison and think for themselves. In reality, many 18 year olds are still children. One of my grandfathers had tattoos, lots of them. He got his first at age 16. The badge of the Old 57th, The Die-Hards Middlesex regiment. He collected lots more. When I was old enough to start taking interest in such things, he made me promise never to get any. Your life changes, tattoos remain and blur. When clothes fall out of fashion we can throw them away, tattoos stay. Every time a person gets a tattoo, they risk artistic horrors upon their skin. For your son, what if that special person glimpses your name, will she be put off by misunderstanding the reason? If he gets a tattoo, make sure it is the best money can buy.
Sooooo.
Sofabeast comments on Dec 2, 2018:
Guns and Jesus? Let me think this through.... Premis #1 America has many guns. Premis #2 More guns equals more gun crime. Conclusion Jesus returns. Nope, it just doesn't look like a logical argument to me.

What is Socialism? [counterpunch.org]
Sofabeast comments on Nov 30, 2018:
Acts that are social. I would direct people to read Auguste Compte, Marx & Engels, Durkheim, Weber and the wonderful Charles Wright Mills. See Liberal Socialism. Do not confuse Socialism with Stalinist oppression. That came from Revolutionary Socialism. I don't have the time to write a few thousand words on the subject right now, but once my assessments are marked, maybe I'll add bits of them here. In the USA, the military is the best example of Socialism at work.
My natural sleep cycle doesn't seem to conveniently fit into a 24-hour day.
Sofabeast comments on Nov 30, 2018:
As John Tyrrell has said, it is your Circadian rhythm which runs around about a 25 hour cycle. The variability of the cycle is partially based on light levels but also on an inbuilt body clock. Look up Michael Siffre who produced a number of studies on the matter. If you are having trouble keeping a good sleep pattern, then you will need to cleanse your sleep habits. Failing that, see a Doctor and get some Melatonin prescribed.

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” Frank Herbert
Let's try this again.
