SpikeTalon replies on Apr 11, 2020:
@VeronikaAnnJ Back at the end of February I had done a public post on the topic of gun control, and LiterateHiker was one of them who left a comment. Actually, it was more of an incoherent rant. I responded to her comment and cited sources that debunked her claims, and a day later I saw my post had been taken down. I know what that means, someone flagged my post and I know who was responsible. A few days later after that I did another post about gun rights and she left a comment again except this time immediately blocked me after commenting so I couldn't reply. Narcissist indeed, not that I care though. Not alot of freethinkers on here, but no shortage of progressive types who are all too eager to hate on members who they disagree with.

@anglophone Hermaphrodites are rather rare, and by the time they reach adulthood they usually decide which sex they wish to identify as. With that said, nature created two sexes, and keep in mind hermaphrodites are a combination of the two sexes. The supposed 64 genders is an absurd notion that I cannot take seriously.

As this is a site for atheists and skeptics, I take it most people on here believe there should always be some sort of evidence required first before arriving to any conclusions. With that said, I have a problem with those condemning others who choose to ignore the quarantine orders, and their argument is that those ignoring such are putting everyone else at risk, but I ask what strong evidence is there that the "covidiots" are actually doing just that? There should be some sort of hard evidence presented first that they tested positive for Covid-19, if not or they already tested negative for the disease I can't help but think those complaining have no solid basis for their complaints. Think about it... You tried MiddleWay, but don't think your concern was realized by many others though. I could cite another example demonstrating the hypocrisy of those who disagreed with you, but the point I had in mind would stir up too much controversy for a public thread though. Anyways, I commend you for the effort.

For obvious reasons I don't want to mention that site on a public post, and Admin didn't really want the other site openly broadcasted on here for fear of attracting attention from the wrong crowd, but if you're interested I could tell you the site name via pm. That's happened to me on here quite a few times already, posts being taken down over peculiar circumstances, and that usually means someone flagged the post. SpikeTalon replies on Mar 16, 2020:
It certainly makes me suspicious, and knowing how the political left tends to drone on about population control it wouldn't surprise me if Covid-19 was engineered to bring about enough chaos in which to push a socialist agenda. Or at the least experiment to see how the population reacts when socialist policies are enacted in the name of what would be best for society as a whole, like a litmus test so to speak. I've still been hearing around that within the next three or so days martial law will be declared and the government will be granted the authority to takeover certain institutions, but not sure if that's just fear mongering or if there really is more going on behind the scenes that the public does not know about.

@Petter Back in 1918 technology was limited and people didn't travel to other countries as often, and today if something like that were to originate in the US I don't doubt they would do what they can to help other countries if the disease spread out. The US gives aid money to quite a few countries, namely Israel, much to my dismay. You cannot reasonably compare the two scenarios as the timeframe between them is too vast. China isn't helping others because they are good people. The measures the US took in 1918 most certainly benefitted other countries, and was alot better than doing absolutely nothing at all.

@Petter Apparently you didn't read the links then, because they did detail the efforts of the US to contain the flu in 1918. I wasn't talking about what they are doing now, that was your point not mine. Like I said before I'm no fool, you were changing your claims in each comment you made. Keep in mind that back in 1918 medical science was not like it is today and people didn't do as much overseas traveling as nowadays. In all fairness, you cannot compare what they did some one hundred years back to what we are capable of doing today.

Your comment on the insulin is truly ignorant. I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and reliant on insulin to survive, and my insurance (private insurance that is) covers me just fine, I don't pay excess. That would probably change if we ever turn healthcare over to the government as Sanders proposed, then the government could dictate who gets to live and die based on what would be best for collective society or the environment. Obviously you fear knowledge and know nothing about Libertarianism, stop wasting my time with your projectionist arguments.

The dictators of this world fear libertarianism and make sure it doesn't gain any traction. Name me one country that is totally libertarian, you can't and that's because power mongers make sure it hasn't gained much traction. On the contrary, systems like communism and socialism have always devolved into dictatorships that take advantage of others. Had it came back positive then there could have been some hell to pay, but that's not the case so why continue droning on about it. You weren't specific, sounded like you assumed I didn't think it was a serious situation.

@bingst I'm sure he's aware that sort of thing happens in a capitalist society, but it also happens in socialist ones as well. Regarding the panic over Covid-19, based on my observations so far it appears a good portion of those who are going into panic mode are those who do not support the President, as alot of those on the right appear to be rather laid back over it all (which I think is disturbing by the way, Covid-19 is a serious threat). If honesty is really the aim for this post, personally I don't think either socialism or capitalism are responsible for the Covid-19 store rushes, the real culprit we should be blaming are people and the poor decisions they make that affect others. I get it you don't care for capitalism much, and I can agree with you on crony capitalism being bad, but the type of democratic socialism Sanders and other Democrats have in mind would not be what this country needs either. Quite a few failures in socialism too, our roads/infrastructure are nothing to brag about, the state and local police forces are corrupt, the military has gotten too big, Social Security and Medicare may go bankrupt by the mid 2030's, and the food stamp program is being abused. I'm to a point where I wonder if any system we humans think up will ever work for everyone and we can just all get along. I think a few points in the OP were a little over the edge, but I do agree with his underlying point.

I never said Trump didn't need to get tested, but he did now which was a good thing so the Democrats need to find something else to complain about now. While I can agree that many people should be tested, conceivably there are plenty of others who don't have a dire need to. Lastly, I don't for one minute believe Covid-19 is a mere hoax.

@Petter Business matters are part of the equation... and so is potential backlash for not doing enough. That still doesn't remove the fact that back in 1918 the US did take measures to help curb the spread of that disease, and your above remark on that was wrong, and don't think that I didn't notice you avoiding that. SpikeTalon replies on Mar 14, 2020:
I've been asked that question multiple times before and my answer is always the same. First of all, when you promise people things like "free" college education and healthcare, just exactly what incentive is there for people to turn down such things? The answer is, they don't or won't turn down such as they see potential for them to benefit in some way. The other thing is, the people in positions of power in governments around the world don't really want the people they are supposed to be serving to have that much individual liberty. It is far easier to control the masses if you promise them things that of which they want to hear. So the answer to that question is simple, the libertarian vision has not been recognized on a large scale as it affords too much individual liberty to the people and less government control, and less government control equals the politicians (or anyone in positions of power) not having all the say in matters. Don't believe me? Look at what's happening right now in the Democrat Party, the will of the D voters has been support behind Sanders, yet the establishment is exerting its power by pushing Biden, and of course ultimately those on the left will come to support Biden should he become the DP nominee. The point is, the will of the people is being suppressed there, and no one is seriously challenging such and why is that? You guessed it, libertarianism is absent on the political left and those in positions of power are having their way yet again. I implore you and anyone else who may come across this post to keep an open mind on what I just said, and perhaps you might realize what I mentioned has some merit to it. I know this much, there are an ever growing amount of people in the US who are getting sick and tired of the way things are, all time record number of those with clinical depression, and that is no mere coincidence. The libertarians are rising gradually, and the control freaks of this world are concerned and will stop at nothing to keep the masses in the dark.
I am not a conspiracy type person, never have been.

@Petter My point there was that your assumption the US did nothing to help others was incorrect. Back in 1918 medical science was not like it is nowadays not to mention that we have various social media platforms to stay connected in the world, and back in those days people did not travel far away like they do nowadays. There were measures in place back in 1918 in an effort to help spread the virus, if otherwise it could have been far worse than it was. At this point China doesn't have a choice but to help other countries, because if they don't it wouldn't look good for them, so stop pretending they are helping other countries due to them having a guilty conscience etc...
