Storm1752 comments on Jun 30, 2020:
The REAL problem is the super-rich and the corporations pay almost NO taxes, a deliberate ploy by Republicans to starve the government of the money it needs to operate. It used 'supply-side economics' as the rationale, claiming the rich would use the money to invest in new industry, thus stimulating the economy. BUT instead, they shipped all the jobs overseas and put their windfall profits into tax shelters or offshore banks. So they lied. NOW they'll use the gigantic federal deficits as an excuse to cut programs to protect the environment, food and drug supply, workers' rights, services to the needy, etc., instead of doing the obvious thing and RAISE TAXES and CUT MILITARY SPENDING. Hopefully people will finally wake up and VOTE this time, give Democrats the majority, and install a democratic socialist system like the one enjoyed in Europe. The Republicans could then resume their intended roles as needed checks on overly-exuberant spending, and as insurers the rich continue to keep enough of their profits to be amply rewarded for their entrepreneurship and innovative genius. One can hope. Meanwhile, loonies such as the Ayn Rand Objectivists can squeal like stuffed pigs about the 'Makers' and 'Takers' from the peanut gallery, where they belong.

Before long women will no longer be needed or appreciated. [theguardian.com]
Storm1752 comments on Jun 24, 2020:
Funny, I see porn as my outlet because women are unavailable. They have unrealistic expectations, demand things I can't give them, then dump me asap when someone "better" comes along, leaving me in emotional ruins. I'm grateful porn has freed me of that gnawing, desperate need for that kind of companionship. I'm currently friends with a vibrant 83-year-old woman who would LIKE sex but doesn't demand it, and likes/loves me for my other positive attributes, which seem invisible to these women you speak of whom I'm supposed to appreciate. They certainly don't seem to appreciate me!

MY Life Matters. Where are my superior and privileged white genes? Why am I not affluent? Where's my undeserved status, house, life? I must really be a complete loser to not have been able to take advantage of my head start in life! Now I REALLY feel guilty. Native Americans were royally screwed, of course. Genghis Khan screwed over millions, too. So did Alexander the Great and every other celebrated victorious warlord since recorded history began. The U.S. is nothing new; it's just that our sensibilities have become so refined the crimes of the past (even out OWN recent past) have become insufferable. We SHOULD take all this to mean the human race (or at least that portion residing in the First World of white guilt) is perfecting itself before our very eyes. We are indeed fortunate to be here to bear witness for this momentous event.

Storm1752 comments on Jun 20, 2020:
Trump is not unique, of course. ALL Republican candidates benefit from a hard core 40% support before they even get out of bed in the morning. You have to be worse than incompetent and inept to lose an election if you toe the line spewed forth by the "vast right-wing conspiracy," as Hillary so accurately called it. I don't think he's an "effective campaigner and organizer" but simply a hate monger who knows his Rush-Hannity-Graham audience and feeds them red meat every time he opens his mouth. It's not Trump we should be worried about, but the entire apparatus, finely tuned to crank out votes for the super-rich elites who run the entire show.

Storm1752 comments on Jun 10, 2020:
No I'm agnostic but I don't have it branded on my forehead. Most people nod their heads in silent agreement on the rare occasions it comes up. Atheists ARE actively disliked, however. About the same as activist Christians, I think. Both are perceived as self-righteous, condenscending, and moralistic, it seems to me. Some people think it smugly self-indulgent of them to claim 'special knowledge' without visible justification, indicating an underlying narcissism. This is just my sense of the situation. Most Americans are silently agnostic, in my opinion. They are not churchgoing, pious, ardent believers, or strident non-believers, and look askance at anyone who is. Of course, many 'hard' atheists are NOT militantly outspoken or overtly contemptuous of other points of view, but enough are to create the stereotype.

Do YOU remember being in the womb? Of. course not. In my opinion, it's no different than aborting a monkey fetus, or a lamb fetus, or any other fetus. When abortion first became legal, many women had them without a second thought. It was only after over 50 years of anti-abortion propaganda women now go through such agonizing! If a child is too expensive, or unwanted for ANY reason, why should it be FORCED on a woman? Abortion should be considered a form of birth control, nothing more, nothing less. I'm agnostic, and my feeling is any god would either understand completely and have no problem with it, or is impersonal so not even aware of it, Religions believe the 'unborn baby' goes straight to heaven anyway, so in that case the woman is actually doing it a favor! Urge this woman STRONGLY to terminate the pregnancy and get on with her life.

Stoicism: worrying only about things under my control eliminates 90% of the stress. The other 10%? I've discovered WORRYING (about something potentially happening) is the stress. When the worst DOES happen, a deadly calm comes over me, I'm able to think clearly and dispassionately and zero in on exactly what needs to be done. I still worry about areas of concern, but only to pinpoint dangers, so I can prevent dangerous situations from hemorraghing into their worst forms. So damage control is also much easier. Usually, I find, really bad things are unforeseeable and unpreventable. Free-floating anxiety is therefore futile and extremely counterproductive.

What's it about, then?
Read this on another board and thought I'd offer it up for discussion here.

Very good. Reincarnation is being thoroughly investigated at the University of Virginia and it has yielded some very compelling results. It's not necessary to believe in an old-school 'god' to speculate it might be a natural, physically-explainable phenomenon which COULD lead (as is the Buddhist belief) the refinement of the concentrated form of energy some refer to as a 'soul.' Or, it could lead a person's concentrated energy in one life back into the collective energy stream, with or without the imprint of individuality. Or something else. I've been thinking it might be useful to erase past religious thoughts from the mind and to use modern concepts and words to talk about reincarnation and other out-of-the-ordinary things, like crop circles and psychism. Using old, moldy, obsolete ones seems to keep a lot of people mired in the past. How that connects with sleep and dreaming... maybe the similarities of coincidence, or a real way a consciousness can travel...anything's possible.
I spent far too much time looking into which group this would be most appropriately posted, so it ...

Origen surely had some inspiring thoughts, but because lately I'm interested in the newly 'hot' idea of a cyclical universe (as opposed to a Big Bang-style one) and reincarnation (which he rejected though he confusingly tolerated 'transmigration of the soul'), and because he held versions of ULTRA-conservative Christian orthodox beliefs, and because I don't believe one word of the Christ myth anyway, the entire artifice of the theology surrounding it seems like an exercise in layering ever-more elaborate myths on top of earlier myths, not a fleshing out of a true story and it's supporting dogma. During this time the 'real story' of 'Christ' and his supposed life, teachings, origin, nature, and that of the universe, were in enormous flux, which tells me it was primarily if not entirely an intellectual exercise, and the prevailing doctrine 'won' for many reasons, but probably NOT because it was the truth. For instance, Origen's idea 'God' created all spirits before the world was created, and Christ's soul first of all, seems merely that, a notion of his, ultimately rejected by the church. Why? I personally don't know or care, but it goes to show it MIGHT have been adopted. Would that have made it the more true? Not in MY opinion! It's irrelevant anyway, to me, because the whole edifice is fiction built upon fiction. Do you think otherwise? What is your point?
Israel has done another land grab, approved under Trump's "Deal of the century".
