Define God! What is your definition of God, that you disbelieve completely if you are an ...

I would have to say that any sentient being that was so powerful that it could create the universe out of itself would have to have a consciousness so far removed from humankind that it would be incomprehensible to humanity, less of a connection than that between single celled organisms and humans. The gods described in the various holy books are more of an anthropomorphic deity that humans can relate to, at times loving and nurturing, at other times jealous and vengeful but most of the time just plain homicidal. As an atheist I can accept the concept of a universal life force, indifferent to my personal needs and wants or even a god particle like Higgs boson with roots to the Big Bang theory but a sentient being that sprang out of itself and then created everything else is not acceptable to me anymore than an angry, old man in the sky deity is acceptable as anything more than a Bronze Age fairy tale. That said however, if an angry old man came down from the sky and clearly demonstrated god powers then I would readily change my mind but I wouldn't be blindly believing in something, rather I would be accepting a change in my perceived reality.
I had an interesting debate about slavery a week ago.
Surfpirate comments on May 12, 2018:
I heard a similar argument (made by a white guy, surprise surprise) that the Europeans didn't commit genocide on the Native Americans (100 million plus), they just got sick and died which was their own fault for not having immunity to European diseases. I guess he forgot about all those deaths by lead poisoning from bullets. This guy also thought that whites were just bringing the land in the Americas to it's highest and best use as the Native Peoples weren't doing anything with it anyway. The lengths that some people will go to in order to whitewash history.
What a great way to meet a date.

Is it true that an Atheist might be just as ignorant as a Theist?
Surfpirate comments on May 12, 2018:
To say that Theists have a monopoly on ignorance and arrogance is a bit of a stretch but then again so is saying that Atheists know there is nothing. An Atheist knows that there is no physical proof to support the existence of an all powerful creator who takes a personal interest in each and every human creation, casting judgment on our actions from heaven and possibly punishing errant humans by sending them to hell, sending angels to influence the actions of men and performing miracles to provide us with moral lessons but to say that Atheists think they know there is no possibility of the existence of a creator god would not be completely correct. Many atheists allow for the possibility that god exists in some form, perhaps an impersonal cosmic life force or the singularity that created the Big Bang but I don't know of any Atheists who believe in the various religious fairy tales dating back to the Bronze Age, developed by primitive humans in an effort to make some sense of the world around them and their place in it. If that is an ignorant and/or arrogant position then it is one that I as an Atheist am quite happy to take .

Surfpirate comments on May 11, 2018:

Nocturnal Beings
Surfpirate comments on May 10, 2018:
I used to work the graveyard shift when I was in my senior year and I found it easier to just go without sleep for 5 days, the occasional catnap for 20 minutes would get me through but the wall would be breathing with me by the time my last shift rolled around. I've always kept strange hours so it is normal for me to be awake in the middle of the night, get up for an hour or two, do a few things and then go back to bed for a couple of hours. I love the calm that exists in the atmosphere in the middle of the night, the stillness when everyone else is asleep and that sense of otherworldliness that you feel sometimes in the middle of the night. The JW's are crazy in the way that all cults are crazy but they have definitely relaxed in the past 30 years or so. A lot of their stranger ideas seem geared to helping them set themselves apart as the one true religion, the blood transfusion issue, the refusal to stand for national anthems or celebrate birthdays, etc. What I notice the most in my nieces and nephews who were raised as JW's is the willingness to persecute and rat out their fellow JW's, gaining brownie points for exposing each other's 'worldly behavior' while engaging in the same practices and trying not to get caught themselves. The now have non-practicing and lapsed standings in the JW's which I find comical as the Elders try to keep up membership roll numbers by counting JW's that no longer attend or practice that crazy religion, it allows them to turn a blind eye to behavior which in the past would have been grounds for immediate disfellowship but I guess they are going more mainstream now. lol

Was anyone else required to kneel and say a prayer before bedtime?
Surfpirate comments on May 9, 2018:
All prayers growing up in my parents home were freestyle and they seemed to go on forever, many a dinner ruined while the 5 minute mini sermon was given and the food went cold, before bed was the same and at church it would sometimes get so long winded with some jack ass thanking god for the bees and the flowers and for putting up with us sinful sorry ass excuses for god's children, blah, blah, blah. If you got restless as little kids do in such circumstances you could look forward to one of those pinches where a parent grabs a hunk of flesh on your arm or leg and gives it a twist - don't even think about crying out. The Lord's Prayer and that little ditty about Now I lay me down to sleep were quick and dirty dreams that I could only wish for. It's all just programming of children so they will be obedient little sheep.
Does anyone else feel like they are destined to fail at relationships?
Surfpirate comments on May 9, 2018:
I guess a lot depends upon what you define as a relationship, not everyone is good at stereotypical relationships but many people are good at variations on that theme and some people are just happier living on their own. You need to do what is right for you, what makes you happy because one thing I know to be true is that it is better not to be in a relationship than to be in a toxic relationship.

It's completely off the hook.

Sometimes laughter is the best medicine, when some of my JW family would try to get all hot and heavy with me over their crazy beliefs I would just deflect with humour instead of arguing with them. I suspect that they really wanted to argue in order to reinforce their belief compared to my Atheism but it was impossible for them to find traction when I used humour and it dropped my stress level significantly.
FEARLESS LEADER ALERT Our beloved Fearless Fuhrer today pulled us out of the Iran Agreement.
Surfpirate comments on May 8, 2018:
From a Machiavellian standpoint starting a war with Iran would really improve the Trumpster's chances for re-election, with China and Russia on the fringes it would be serious enough to make people stick with whoever was in power for the sake of national security. The Crazy Christians would be over the moon as this would be seen to move biblical prophecy forward and the Israelis would be happy so the Jewish voting bloc would be onside as well. Forget what is good for Americans, just get re-elected.

Surfpirate comments on May 6, 2018:
I understand your anger and from my own experience I can tell you that at some point you have to set that down because it's not your burden to carry. We have free will, we make decisions and there are results that occur from those decisions, that's all there is to it. My older brother was given 10 years max to live after he underwent heart surgery and died on the table, the surgery team was able to revive him but it was clear he would never survive another surgery and the work they did would only last a maximum of 10 years, he was a ticking time bomb. I pleaded with him to retire at 55 and spend his last years doing the things he had always dreamed of before it was too late. Instead he continued to go to work at a job I knew he hated and he spent the rest of his time doing missionary work for his religion. He got 7 of the 10 years he was expecting to get before a brain embolism ended his existence, I was angry with him for wasting his last years and angry with my self for not getting him to see this. It's been more than 3 years and I am learning to put down this burden because it isn't my burden to bear. My brother wanted to roll the dice and hope for a better life next time on his paradise earth that he believed in, his and not mine. My younger brother's wife shot herself in the head a few months after my older brother died and my younger brother wanted to follow her into the grave using the same gun. I managed to stop him from doing that and helped get him back on his feet again, he resents me for it so much that he has physically attacked me and threatened to kill me. Did I do the right thing? Is it my fault for not letting him blow his brains out? I don't think so but he may disagree with me, not my burden to bear. Put it down, your brother made a choice and it worked out badly for him, full stop.

I wonder if there isn't a scientific explanation for these phenomena that we haven't uncovered yet, naturally the whole topic is shrouded in superstition which makes it difficult to get scientists to look at it objectively. Basically you wind up with two sides, believers and debunkers, personally I just want to have to deal with anything like that again.

Where exactly is the leak? I'm a master builder (no not masterbaiter that's fishing) and it may be a simple fix. It could be that the fitting is leaking at the thread or that the valve is stuck which is also an easy fix. Plumbing is pretty straight forward and simple to work on most of the time. If you have the water turned off already then there isn't much to worry about but you could save yourself a bunch of hassle this weekend (ie. flushing with a bucket from the kitchen sink) if the problem is straight forward.

Surfpirate comments on May 5, 2018:
Christians have a moral code, they just don't live by them. I have found Atheists to be much more upstanding in the morality department, maybe it's because we have to walk our walk instead of just talking the hypocritical religious talk. I am always amazed when the religious people try to claim the moral high ground when their history shows them to be completely incapable of acting in a moral manner. If it takes the constant threat of being cast into hell fire for eternity get a person to act in a moral manner then they aren't being moral, they are just being obedient.
How many people find it difficult to ask for help?
Surfpirate comments on May 5, 2018:
I've had nicknames like MacGyver, The Fixer and The Troubleman because that's the sort of thing that floats my boat, I love a challenge and I am very independent BUT when it comes to big problems and big projects I learned a long time ago that it just makes sense to delegate tasks. One man can singlehandedly build a house but not a shopping mall or a hotel or a school, you have to ask for help and then coordinate that help if you are going to be successful. No man is an island, here's a pick of my new house that I am building solo from the foundations up. Having been an expat in the Caribbean, South America and Central America for the better part of 20 years I can say that it makes a lot of sense to ask for help when required and to learn the language so you can develop friendships with the locals.
Boyfriend is agnostic, I'm an atheist. How to cope with disagreements?
Surfpirate comments on May 4, 2018:
Your boyfriend sounds more like a questioning christian than an Agnostic and you can either help him with his questions or not. I was raised as a JW, they don't read the bible but they do study it selectively so it's a matter of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. I didn't read the bible cover to cover until after I left the JW's at the age of 13. It would probably help the process if you stopped referring to him as an Agnostic as it's just a crutch that keeps him from having to address the problem of his continuing belief in god. I appreciate that you are cut off from reason and common sense being stuck in the bible belt but don't sell yourself short by settling for less than you deserve. Good luck.

Why do humans have an unhealthy obsession with wars and sacrifice?
Surfpirate comments on May 3, 2018:
War is for suckers because the people doing the dying are never the ones reaping the rewards. Self sacrifice is what you should be willing to do for those your love and for the preservation of your core values but never for religion or nationalism. If I must kill another living being I want it to have more meaning than just because they were wearing a different coloured uniform than I was.
Religious =/= Far Right?
Surfpirate comments on May 3, 2018:
My American friends consider me to be a Lefty and my Canadian friends consider me to be a Righty. They are both right insofar as I am a Liberal Libertarian and by that I mean that I think less government is generally better but because the social contract between business and society has become broken it is necessary for government to step in and try to mend that fissure. Ideally I would like to see government stick to the basics of infrastructure (roads, public utilities and essential services, etc.), national defense (that means defense only, no wars for profit bullshit unless the politicians and the arms dealers want to lead from the front and that will never happen), education (not the dumbing down to the level of compliance education but an actual progressive education), law enforcement and rehabilitation of offenders and last but not least universal health care provision (yes, just like the rest of the civilized world, the US needs to get it's head out of its ass and provide for the common good instead of the corporate profit). As for the rest, just try to be free and at the same time try not to be assholes towards each other. A good start would be to source the funds for these initiatives by cutting overhead by getting our noses out of other people's business and letting free enterprise pick up the slack where needed and by taxing religions at the same rate as any other for profit business because they are a business and always have been, this would provide more than enough revenue to give everyone a tax cut and fund these critical government services with a surplus.

That the Grand Poobah of Fuck Book would suggest that he has the moral authority to decide which of the official liars is more trustworthy is truly laughable. I hear he is coming out with a dating app tied to FB, I guess he didn't feel he had enough personal data on the millions of users on his site that he can sell to third parties. Bullies.
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
I was bullied a lot as a kid because my mother was a JW and I had to go to that cult until I was 13 and was biblically free to choose my own path to Atheism, being bullied in hindsight was one of the few good things that came out of being forced to go to the Kingdom Hall. I realized early on that I would either learn to stand my ground or become the neighbourhood punching bag. I got in a lot of fights at school, protestants and catholics would set aside their differences to beat the crap out of the JW kid, I was even carried physically out of the school yard once so that 6 kids could kick the shit out of me off school property as that was taboo. I gained 4 broken noses over the years and more bruises than I can count but I stood my ground and when I couldn't beat them physically I learned to beat them mentally in class and on the playground, humiliation is a powerful weapon and I was lucky to be smarter than the average bear. Eventually, I managed to get the worst of the bullies to leave me alone by making pacts with them to stop pummeling me with their fists if I stopped making them look like laughing stocks in the classroom, the others I managed to earn a grudging respect from. It was a long and painful road but I feel better for it than if I had followed my older brother's path; I was a fighter and he was a runner, in the end he ran back to the JW's which is a sad thing in itself. So I dealt with bullies by fighting back even when there was no way for me to win the battle but I knew that if I stuck with it I would win the war. I think bullying made me a stronger person but I wouldn't wish that baptism by fire on my own kids.

Does anyone have advice for a person that's been an atheist less than 3 months?
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
Just be patient with yourself and try not to take things too seriously. You will be seeing the world a little differently without the blinders and filters that religion gives a person, it can be a bit of a shock sometimes so give yourself some time to adjust to reality as it is instead of how you've been told it is supposed to be according to religious dogma. You may find yourself backsliding and that's perfectly normal, old habits die slowly and there is always pressure to return to old ways, religion has a great advertising program that is very effective and Atheism only has the truth going for it and no PR Dept.
Should we demand/expect for respect?
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
Even if you have shown the level of integrity to be able to say you have earned society's respect it doesn't mean that people will give you the respect you are entitled to. People respect others who are undeserving of that respect according to civilized, social norms, just look at some of the populist leaders that have been respected by large groups of people over the course of history. Hitler was well respected, Lenin was well respected, Idi Amin as well and let's not forget the current resident of the White House who garners a great deal of respect from his loyal followers. Self Respect is what matters to me more than anything because if I don't have that then I don't have anything.
Scientists In Alaska Find Mammoth Amounts Of Carbon In The Warming Permafrost : Goats and Soda : NPR
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
There are craters showing up all over the northern tundra, particularly in Siberia, they are caused by eruptions of methane gas trapped under the permafrost that is being released explosively when the permafrost melts because of global warming. Methane is a very potent greenhouse gas, about 30 times more potent than CO2.

Costa Rica
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
I've only visited Costa Rica but I did live in Nica for a while and still follow events their because of friends I made there. Lots of turmoil lately around Ortega making a grab at Social Security in order to prop up the Sandanista government. Since the Nica Act went through and the IMF tightened the purse strings it has been getting harder for the people of Nicaragua and I think Costa Rica may be feeling some of that pressure along the Guanacaste border from what my friends in Granada and San Juan del Sur have told me.
So why are women disgusted by men with...uuuhh, platinum (silver?
Surfpirate comments on May 2, 2018:
It could be an evolutionary thing, gray hair is a sign of aging and aging can be perceived as a lack of virility. Although this doesn't seem to be the case for the Silverback in a troop of gorillas, so who knows if it isn't just personal preference? Personally, I've been shaving my head bald in the hotter months ever since I worked in the Caribbean and found it was 5 degrees cooler under my hard hat if my head was shaved. What I found interesting is that there are some women that are fascinated by a shaved head and I have many women ask me if they could touch my head and by touch I mean run their fingers in a caress over my head, often followed by a little shiver that is clearly sexual in nature. Maybe you need to break out the hair clippers and the razor, just watch out for sunburn on your pate as it is really painful.
My patient died, I held his hand as he went to sleep and told him we'd look after him.

Is it OK to be racist against white people?
Surfpirate comments on May 1, 2018:
I've been called Gweilo many times when I worked with a group out of Hong Kong, basically White Devil but it depends upon how you say it - much in the way that Black can mean a person with dark skin pigment or nigger, tone is everything. Cracker is one I used to get when I lived in the Caribbean, same deal as Gweilo, depends on how it is said but usually it's a bad one. Gringo was so common when I lived in South America that I barely noticed it after a while, technically any European foreigner but only targeted at the White variety. Caucasian people are at the top of the food chain globally and have been for the past few centuries but this too shall pass. Expect more of this as Asian power increases and Western power decreases, it doesn't make racism right but it does make clear that Whites don't hold a monopoly on this form of ignorance.

Surfpirate comments on May 1, 2018:
It's hard to understand logic from a perspective, ers just aren't used to the game that is so much a part of logic so expecting to see everyg resolved in a year or two is naive. The latest round of peace talks is just another move in a chess game that never ends and is not suppose to end. Trump upset that balance by stepping in and insisting that the game be played like checkers instead of chess, nuclear annihilation is not part of the term plan and that threat by Trump has shifted the way the game is being played but not to his advantage. Expect to see the two Koreas and China working together much more closely in the future and America being left out in the cold.
Is it OK to be racist against white people?
Surfpirate comments on May 1, 2018:
Any form of racism is ignorant and counter productive, so no it's never okay to be racist. I grew up in a multicultural community and while racism was frowned upon and uncommon it was still there, probably because we are taught from an early age to identify differences. One of these is not like the other, one of these things is kinda the same, right out of Sesame Street. I built several projects in Bermuda and I was the subject of racist comments and slurs on many occasions from the black majority. I was even told that these comments weren't racist because racism is a 'white thing', it was an eye opener to say the least. In the past I had approached racism as a negative thing to be frowned upon but I did so from the white majority perspective, it is quite humbling to be on the other end of the stick. Interestingly enough, the island I had be building on prior to my work in Bermuda was very racist but from an Elitist White point of view, it was a virtual apartheid system and I felt very sorry for the blacks and how they were treated by the wealthy, white land owners. I wouldn't comply with some of the directives I was given and in the end it was so unbearable that I left. I did all I could to help my black workers, they even nicknamed me Bob the Builder because I was the little white guy that made everything good. These were good men who weren't being allowed to reach their potential because of elitist and racist people. No, racism is never a good thing no matter who is on the receiving end.

When the Conquistadors arrived in the New World and witnessed human sacrifice, they stopped it.
Surfpirate comments on Apr 30, 2018:
These are the same savage bastards that hunted natives with war dogs and laughed when the man, woman or child was caught and torn to shreds, the same guys that raped their way across the continent; yeah good thing they stopped those natives from ritually killing people. They definitely liked to enslave the local populations wherever they went but they were bad managers of their human resources, killing, beating and starving their slaves to the point that the natives were largely eliminated as a viable work force. Good thing there were black people in Africa just waiting to become slaves and they were more resistant to European diseases, lucky for them they cost enough gold that they weren't slaughtered indiscriminately for the most part.

Do birthdays make any sense if you are an Atheist?
Surfpirate comments on Apr 30, 2018:
So what have I learned from all this hulla balloo about Birthdays? Well I can tell that they are very near and dear to people's hearts and whether or not they are religion based (check out birthdays and the ancient greeks, romans and egyptians if you are curious) it just doesn't matter because whether or not you are an atheist or not, most people are not about to give up their birthday. Wild horses won't stop people celebrating this most personal of days, old religious connections be damned because if you grew up with birthdays they probably hold a special place in your heart and that's why people will not accept any reason for why they shouldn't celebrate their birthday. Heck, I didn't grow up with birthdays or easter or xmas, etc. and I still like birthdays a bit, enough to go along with it for the sake of my wife who loves birthdays. Now Halloween is another story altogether, don't even try to mess with that awesome night of tricks and treats. 3:)

Surfpirate comments on Apr 30, 2018:
When we rely upon faith to define ourselves we are in truth relying upon a comfortable lie or fantasy because deep down we know there is no real evidence to back up the belief we are trying to define ourselves by. You can define yourself according to the evidence you have or the blind faith you find comfort in but not both, how others choose to define you is their problem.
Religious exodus post discovery of anti-aging?
Surfpirate comments on Apr 30, 2018:
I think that there is a strong possibility that the majority of the population would abandon religion if given enough time to do so by extending the human lifespan. Most people aren't fully matured until they hit their 40's and by the time they have finished raising their kids they are into their 50's and staring retirement and the prospect of having to face their own mortality in a couple of decades. Rather than change their religious beliefs it is just a lot easier to coast through the golden years to the grave. No upsetting the apple cart for family and friends or ones own world view and still hedging ones bets in the event that there really is an afterlife. I think most people wouldn't be able to cling to those religious beliefs if left to dwell on it for a couple of centuries instead of a decade or two. Give people the chance to see what negative effects religion has on them and their kids, grandkids and great grandkids, the blinders will come off before they reach the century mark. I would suggest that 80% of people would abandon religion by the time they reach 100 years of age or at the very least have developed serious doubts about religious doctrines.
Why is it that people who were not religious before so often "get religion" and start going to ...
Surfpirate comments on Apr 30, 2018:
Programming and propaganda, the various churches work hard promoting their product and family values is a key part of that program. If you grew up religious then you were indoctrinated into the idea that morality stems from religion (how ironic is that when one considers the hypocrisy of religions) and since we want to raise our kids 'right' it is easy to reach out to an accepted and well packaged program. If you didn't grow up in a religion then the advertising arm of religion kicks in and promises rosy pictures of happy families through religion and who wouldn't want a happy family? Plus it's all free, at least at first anyway, a great sales and marketing pitch if ever there was one.
Is a democrat who is a centrist also a leftist or socialist ?
Surfpirate comments on Apr 29, 2018:
Speaking as a Canadian, I doubt that any of the social democratic countries in the western world would recognize any Americans as Socialists. Bernie Sanders is what is called a red conservative in Canada. Fear not Americans, you are safe from becoming Socialists under your current system of government, so be happy.
I just saw Trump saying on facebook that because 1 retired old judge said it, all gun control people...
Surfpirate comments on Apr 29, 2018:
There are already restrictions on gun ownership in America, not very many but some. This isn't about repealing the 2nd amendment but safe and reasonable restrictions on who can own a gun, what kinds of guns they can own and what are the responsibilities that go with owning a gun. A person can legally own a gun before they can legally drink a beer, when did beer become more dangerous than guns? Convicted felons are banned from owning guns for a decade and yet the Revolutionary Army had felons among their ranks bearing arms and fighting for the right to bear arms, technically speaking all members of the Revolutionary Army were traitors to the crown and therefore the worst of felons. Should people be able to buy explosive rounds or armour piercing rounds? There are already restrictions on guns and it isn't unconstitutional, let's get over that silly argument and enact gun laws that any sane person would want.
What's your opinion of assisted suicide?
Surfpirate comments on Apr 29, 2018:

I've been the boss for most of my career and an Atheist for all of it, I wouldn't put up with any sort of fundamentalist religious nuts but other than that it would be none of my business what an employee believes in. That said I have come across plenty of fundamentalist clients who I wouldn't do business with and I would certainly never want to be their employee. They lie and don't even realize it because they are delusional.
