Happy Saturday, Cohorts! How's it going?
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 9, 2021:
I use the disposables when shopping or in other situations in which the mask goes on when I arrive and stays on until I leave. When outdoors, with infrequent human contact and ample space for distancing as I hike or run, I wear a bandana-like cloth mask that easily flips up or down when others get within around 20 feet.
A week or two ago I ordered something from Walmart.
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 8, 2021:
Irks me no end how smug, aggressive and rude these zealots are. Haven’t experienced this particular type of “evangelizing,” but would probably recycle the pamphlet or use it for kindling, and dash off a note to Walmart management urging them to create a policy banning this type of thing, stressing that it’s bad for business (though not mine, specifically, as I kind of detest Walmart 😖).
To me, the question that life must have a purpose, I never found to be true.
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 8, 2021:
I agree that existence has neither meaning nor purpose, which is great! Biological life has no meaning, but a single purpose: to keep going, as long as possible, by any means, whatever the cost. The answer to all other existential questions is 42.

Why do religious people let god get away with being so horrible? : atheism
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 6, 2021:
Easy. Because he’s a god and can totally kick their asses.
Happy Monday Everyone! I'm really struggling with sleep lately and I am so exhausted.
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 5, 2021:
I usually sleep well, but nights can get short when I don’t get to bed early, because I like rising early to see the sun rise with a hot cup of coffee. So, naps to the rescue! To catch up on missed sleep, or give myself a midday boost, because I love that energetic, fresh feeling after I wake. I often try to take a nap before an important meeting, speech or other event, so I can bring that little burst of energy to it!
To all of my new found atheist friends: I have been atheist most of my life and basically gave up on...
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 5, 2021:
Welcome! I totally hear you about being able to connect with like-minded folks. I live in a diverse area in which religion is usually kept private, but it still means a lot to me to interact with others. Someone once asked me if it was like “preaching to the choir,” but it’s really nice to be occasionally reminded that there IS a choir!

I've never been one for labels.
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 2, 2021:
I pondered our many labels recently as a board member of a powerful nonprofit in California dedicated to the rights of people with disabilities (which includes me, BTW). It concerned a mission statement containing a boilerplate statement about fighting discrimination and safeguarding rights “regardless of” a typical list of factors, such as ethnicity/race, economic status, etc., plus a well-intentioned reference to “religion/faith.” I objected, because it leaves a lot of us out, but had to think hard about what to add that covers communities as diverse as ours. I eventually settled on “irreligion” as a placeholder umbrella term, but am not sure I’m completely satisfied. As for myself, I like the term “free thinker,” as it leaves room for change and nuance.
Happy Friday Everyone! What's better, fluffy socks or slippers?
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 1, 2021:
Socks indoors, thickness depending on how warm or cold it is; crocs for venturing onto the porch or nearby, and more protective wear if it’s wet or I’m venturing into the garden. (Regarding your socks/slippers paradigm: As a martial artist, I must be ready to defend myself at all times. Fluffy socks lessen the impact of a flying kick, and slippers, especially those resembling fuzzy animals, seldom inspire the desired psychological terror in my enemies. 😳)
It's Thursday Everyone! It's also New Year's Eve. How do you like to celebrate?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 31, 2020:
At midnight, I always take my best pistol and shot straight into the air. (The water doesn’t go very high, and I always get pretty wet 💦 🔫😮)
Happy Tuesday Friends! Which destination do you prefer, mountains or oceans?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 30, 2020:
I’m lucky enough to be near both (plus the desert), but mountains are my favorite. I grew up on and around boats and was a sailor for a while, but the ocean kept trying to kill me, so I backed off and ran away to the High Country!
What do you say when someone asks “Why don’t you believe in god?” : atheism

Happy Monday Everyone! I have so much paper for the recycling bin! Do you recycle?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 29, 2020:
I got into the habit of recycling ages ago, and live in an area that provides waste bins for recyclables, regular trash and greenwaste. I reserve those recyclables that can be redeemed for cash, and can do that at a station right behind a grocery store I use (after 2-3 months, I get maybe $5 - $10. Not much, but it’s so easy: why not?) I hardly generate any regular trash, and recycling and greenwaste are at least double that amount or more. I’m going to get smaller bins for everything except greenwaste. As I said, it’s a habit now, and easy to do!
Happy Friday and for those of you who celebrate it, Merry Christmas.

Secular "Values Voters"- [theconversation.com]
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 22, 2020:
A pretty good article with lots of good info, but I’m not sure about the whole concept of “values,” which often are more like beliefs untethered to our ever-changing realities. I vote according to my interests and ethics.
So much for moral absolutes.

What Kinda Funeral Do Atheist Have?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 22, 2020:
I am a secular celebrant, legally “ordained” in my US state, and write and deliver memorial services regularly. I work with the family/friends of the deceased to create a service focused on the life, character and achievements of that person in the context of their private and public lives, and the communities to which they belonged. If I do a good job, only the most rigidly “religious” attendees even notice that there is no mention of any gods, afterlife or dogma.
Happy Monday Y'all! Do you run hot or cold?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 21, 2020:
Definitely run hot! It takes a lot for me to feel cold, and I have been chagrined by the increasingly hotter southwest summers. My typically high metabolism has other benefits: I tend to heal quickly from injuries; can enjoy wintertime hiking and camping; and also can dangle the prospect of lower heating bills to potential relationship partners ...

Such heavy handed measures made more sense in the Soviet Union, which had a vigorous anti-superstition policy, but now only serves the interests of the Orthodox Church, guarding its privileged social and political position. Happy Tuesday Everyone. Today's question is - how much stimulant do you usually take in in a day?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 16, 2020:
I start my day at dawn with a fresh-brewed mug of espresso, dripped over a bit of condensed milk. I typically have a second cup in early afternoon, but will add more depending on workload/deadlines/company. (Back in my journalism days, I reached a peak consumption of 16 cups in 24 hours as I worked some very long days with frequent overnighters.) I enjoy tea, too (both green and black), but my primary allegiance is to coffee! (For fellow aficionados, I highly recommend Michael Pollan’s short history of “Caffeine,” a quick and very fun read.)

Happy Thursday Everyone. What's the difference between healthy and boring?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2020:
Not sure I see the struggle involved. I stay healthy enough to do all the wacky, ill-advised, sometimes dangerous and genuinely fun stuff I love to do. Yeah, I got a taste of trauma bonding while in an all-too-long relationship with an emotionally abusive spouse, but came to my senses and got out. Emotional health trumped the bond.

Happy Tuesday! Which charity or charitable cause is your favourite to which to contribute?
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 24, 2020:
I tend to give locally, to groups whose work I can see, and avoid most of the larger organizations with high overhead and administrative costs. My one exception is the International Red Cross, because I remember my parents talking about how much it meant to them when they’d show up in the hellish places in which they were held prisoner by the Nazis during WWII (mom was a concentration camp survivor; dad a POW). Otherwise, I have been a longtime supporter of a small tribal college on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, which I visit regularly.
Can an atheist be a proud Secular Christian?
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 22, 2020:
They may not use that label, but I think most of the people on this site fit that category: Having ditched the theological/“god” part of Christianity, they still often uncritically embrace the moral/ethical ideas for which the Jesus character is the front man.
Happy Friday Friends! What's something whose texture is repellant to you?

But sea cucumbers are one of the few foods to which I can apply the term “repellant!”

Sometimes, my self care involves clearing my calendar, keeping to myself and creatively loafing; other times, getting myself outdoors for a nice walk and some fresh air. Happy Monday everyone! What does October mean to you?
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 5, 2020:
One of my favorite months! I like to take my vacations in October, when (in other times) kids tend to be in school and parents at work. It’s the start of my hiking and camping season, and a friend who runs a pumpkin lot sets aside some good “eating pumpkins” for me to steam up and enjoy. Normally, I would also be traveling for some quarterly meetings around California, plus attending the annual Skeptics’ conference in Las Vegas — a gathering of like-minded folks that I will sorely miss this year. Finally, my fall harvest comes, and I am now picking tons of lemons, limes, tangerines, avocados, persimmons, bananas and pomegranates!

Hey guys, Happy Tuesday! When you hear the phrase "Processed foods," what does that mean to you?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 29, 2020:
A “process” can be all kinds of things done to prepare or store food, and like the words used to indicate the opposite of “processed,” like “organic” or “natural,” it can be used imprecisely or even deceptively. I avoid foods that have additives like corn syrup or lots of sodium, are fried (especially deep fried), or are processed in ways that deprive them of their nutrients (like many breads and baked goods). Oh, yeah: I only eat foods that are chemically based!
Happy Monday! What’s the spiciest thing you’ve ever eaten?

Most dramatic: A couple of years ago, I tweaked my lower back when I pulled a load of 150 pounds or so while not braced properly, resulting in lower back pain that I was told would probably be permanent. Not so! I started doing stretches that worked that area, and the pain is gone as flexibility and strength increase.

Sounds like you had “Sewing Block!” What you describe is very familiar: Searching for that “Aha! moment” as I begin a project, usually something I’m writing, or maybe designing a presentation or curriculum. Right now, I ‘m getting ready to put together the fall edition of a quarterly news magazine I edit for a regional organization. If inspiration is slow in coming, I often start with the mechanics: assembling and editing articles, gathering info, selecting art and cartoons, etc. If the “Aha!” still eludes me, I goad myself into starting without expectations, knowing I can improve/change things later. Sometimes, “Aha!” just needs to see me start ... and I’m proud of myself when I see the process through.

I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school for nine years, and this stuff never came up. They taught us, like ... science.
