The answer is NO.... Most Americans are idiots who politically identify with who they admire or aspire to be, even if it's a delusion in thinking that they are or will ever be a member of that club, so they keep voting and politically allying against their own economic interests. If most Americans ever heard George Carlin's rants about the club they are not in, and never will be in, and believed him, we would have much better politics here. The Lucy and Charlie cartoon here is like Trickle Down economics, a myth spread by the rich for their benefit and the fleecing of everybody else, but it works because most of those being fleeced buy into it.

I would also include the many Dems in congress that are corporate Dems and make up the majority of the party in both houses... The are just as worthless, and opposed to the interests of average Americans, as the Repubs... All those Dems care about is campaign donations of corporate cash, keeping their jobs and perks, while posturing about identity politics and culture war stuff that has no real effect in improving the lives of most average Americans. Which is why so many average Americans have caught onto both major parties and no longer vote in federal elections. In fact, the non-voters outnumber the number of voters who voted for Biden as well as those who voted for Trump. In any other country, that would be seen as a vote of No Confidence for either party.

Iowa human trafficking victim Pieper Lewis sentenced, ordered to pay $150,000 : NPR
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 14, 2022:
In the interest of fairness and accuracy, I wanted to share that I saw the story of this case on the front page of the statewide newspaper, The Des Moines Register today. I figured this site's members would be interested in knowing that racism apparently was not an issue in her sentencing. The judge was a black male, same race as her. Sounds like she maybe could have had better legal representation and not settled for the plea bargain that took away her affirmative defense for the stabbing and murder. But that could easily have ended up with a conviction, where a long prison sentence would have been certain. I do hope this troubled young woman does take this opportunity of the fundraising paying her restitution to finally get her head straight and make something positive out of her life. She has clearly suffered greatly and also made some bad choices, along with developing some behavior issues. I think the restitution was excessive, but it's now a moot point. The future is all up to her. I hope she completes her probation and gets into some programs for her issues and learns some job and life skills as well during her probation.

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 14, 2022:
Nice that the establishment did the right thing, since my experience with bars that I go to for karaoke, never seem to do that when someone harasses me for no good reason. But in your case, you had a whole group there that the guy harassed, unlike my experiences where it was more one on one, so they probably figured it was worth bouncing him in order to keep your group coming back. I call that bar economics or bar injustice, where it's not about behavior, but about numbers of each party involved, that determines what, if anything, the bar does after a conflict occurs. In this case, the guy was clearly a nutcase, rather than some regular drunken asshole like I encounter at bars, so hopefully the place will bar him for good with the police call, and if he shows up there again, he will be charged with trespassing and violating a no-contact order they got against him after the police call. I'm like you, in that I enjoy screwing with the heads of religious nuts, but I have begun to realize, like Betty said, that it's probably not worth the risk now that right wingers feel so emboldened to act violently towards us and that you never know which of them might have guns at home or in their vehicle, even if they are unarmed when you encounter them.If we were a sane and civilized country with gun control, the risk from these people would be a lot less, but we aren't and it isn't.

Capitalism versus communism debate [youtu.be]
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 13, 2022:
Because communism has already become fairly discredited, I would much rather see a debate in which one side argues for democratic socialism, which has been successfully practiced in many countries, and the other side attempt to argue in favor of American capitalism, which in practice is actually a plutocracy for government and neoliberalsim and unchecked capitalism for its economic policies. The argument that societies have only two choices, capitalism and communism or some other totalitarian form of government, is a false one. Socialism has been given a bad name because if its critics constantly lumping it in with communism, falsely and bringing up the boogeymen of Mao and Stalin... But unfortunately, most Americans are too ignorant about politics and economics, along with being brainwashed by the corporate media, so they fall for it...

She was no threat to anyone, unlike the insurrectionists. Typical American justice, one standard for colored defendants and left wing protesters, and another one for whites who are right wing protesters or terrorists, unless the latter group actually kill or shoot somebody that is law enforcement, then they get the book thrown at them... Unless they kill or shoot law enforcement, they always get the kid gloves treatment, since the cops and prosecutors are usually politically allied or at least sympathetic to them.... The story give no details about the sentencing judge, but I have little doubt that he was likely a conservative white man, probably racist, who wanted to put this black woman in her place...

So terribly sad the guilt this innocent man has borne.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 11, 2022:
He has no reason to feel guilt. The real guilt and blame belong to Cheney and maybe also W., as well as all those in the intelligence community who I have no doubt at least knew 9-11 was going to happen and let it happen, all so Cheney could have his war with Iraq and get their oil, as well as provide the excuse for the War On Terror, the Patriot Act, and other policies to take away our freedoms, civil liberties, and rights to dissent. An added bonus was that 9-11 allowed W. to suddenly rocket in popularity and stature as the country predictably rallied around him and he went from looking like a doofus to a Churchill-like statesman. I'm a pretty cynical person, but even I don't want to think the Cheney and some of his allies in the intelligence community were actively, instead of passively involved in the attack on that day, but either way, it was obvious the government was involved in the demolition and collapse of Building 7 at the World Trade Center, so they knew something was going to happen and were ready that day to work with it to serve their ends.

Your experience is by no means unique. I have run across the profiles of several really hot looking, college educated white professional career women on Match, who only wanted to date black men who were less educated than them, high school level only, for what was obviously just a casual, sex-based relationship, if you can call it that, or dating. It's not hard to figure out where these women's heads were at, maybe some sort of fantasy about black studs, etc. Needless to say, I never messaged any of them after seeing their profile, as I'm not their type or the race they wanted, to each their own.....

Is this site and group the best approach to a dating site?
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 10, 2022:
Not sure how to answer your ? This site was originally intended to be a dating site, but that never really came to feasibility. The site never reached the critical mass number of members needed to offer local dating options for more than a very small group of members. Since then, the site has lost the vast majority of members that joined in the last several years. As for finding people here that are interested in poly relationships, I would say the odds are even more uphill than for finding people interested in mono relationships. Rotsa ruck... I like the format of this site for being able to get to know people more deeply and gradually than in other dating sites, where the process is more brief and superficial than here, and would prefer this to the regular paid membership dating sites, but since this site offers no local dating options for me, and never has, since I joined several years ago, it's either Match or nothing for me as far as ever meeting someone to date. And even Match has become a worse site over the last couple years, as is probably the case with all paid dating sites, since they have no real competition and have no incentive to improve their quality and services. It appears that all of them, except E-Harmony maybe, keep making their profile formats worse and more limited, so their usefulness in finding compatible matches keeps getting worse. But the prices keep going up. That's what happens when companies have no real competition, enjoy monopoly power in their industry and have no government regulation either. And the dating sites really have no incentive to help their members successfully find long term compatible matches, as they make more money from keeping you single and a paying member for years and years. So they will, as long as most singles continue to have hope that by remaining a paying member, their ship will come in eventually and as long as the dating sites have enough anecdotal success stories among the public to continue to seem legitimate as a way to meet a partner.

Met another woman last night who labeled herself as Independent on her profile. She rejected me, mainly on not being outdoorsy enough to match her, which I think was probably honest and legit, but what struck me as weird, in hindsight, is that my profile info should have made it pretty clear that I'm not as outdoorsy as most people, so why did she reply to my first message and agree to meet me in the first place? It was obvious once we started talking about politics last night in our meeting, which she doesn't like to discuss, that she is very conservative on the economic issues, with the usual mindset that most poor people made bad choices, deserve to suffer for it, and don't deserve much help from the government or society. I learned this from her bringing up the issue of student debt relief and she had no response when I heard her out, and then brought up the counter arguments of how a highly educated general population is a social and societal good that would improve our politics, government and society, as well as the contrast and lack of justice, fairness, and equality in how corporations receive all kinds of undeserved and unneeded welfare from the govt., same with the military budget, and finally how businesses were all bailed out with Covid relief along with the Wall Street banks that made bad bets and fraudulent loans in the Great Recession and they were not seen as undeserving. She had no answer and changed the subject, but I had already knew we were politically incompatible and just wanted to maybe get her to learn something about her selective standards for who is worth and deserving and who isn't, regarding government help.

Whites becoming even more of a racial minority is not a concern for these theocratic, racist fascist nationalists, because, under a totalitarian, fascist government, a minority group can still control the majority oppressed group or groups thru sheer force of the iron fist. Ever hear of South Africa? It's not something that is easy to maintain forever, but it's something that can be implemented, and don't think the Repubs and their white Christian nationalists allies are unwilling to take power, thru elections or civil war, and go for it.

Physical Attraction
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 9, 2022:
I am gratified to see the fairly even split of votes, because it doesn't surprise me much in my online dating experience. The numbers finally seem to add up and make sense. Let me explain. Almost all the women I have connected with on Match, tho they are only a small subset of the total population in my local online dating pool, tell me that almost all the guys they encounter on Match seem to be only interested in sex rather than actual long term relationships. But at the same time, over 85% of the women in my local dating pool, even tho I am very selective about who I message and reach out to in the first place, reject me without ever replying to me. What I infer from that, for what it's worth, is that there are also plenty of women in my local dating pool who are glad to also, like all the men I keep hearing about, go ahead and date someone otherwise incompatible if they are hot enough looking and the sex is great. Because so many women are rejecting me, due to looks or maybe also or instead feeling I'm not compatible, even tho they seem to be compatible on paper, otherwise I wouldn't have messaged them in the first place. So looks and dating just for sex, seem to be the unspoken factors, at least in my experience, of who gets chosen for dating, rather than it being mostly or always based on compatibility traits that show up on paper and in profiles, so to speak. And it goes both ways with each gender. Which is what people have been saying for years on this site as well as what the research has shown. Looks matter way more than most people are willing to admit in their dating choices, except maybe in polls like this, where people are willing to privately admit what their priorities are in dating and partner selection. I have no doubt that, in spite of how mismatched I am on paper with the local dating pool, on traits like religion, kids situation, drinking habits and hating country music, that if I still had a full head of hair and an athletic body, my response rate to my first messages would be a lot higher than the 10-15% that it is..... even with the fact that in my dating pool, the ratio of men to women is almost 3 to 1. And it is also obvious with online dating, including with my choices, that the first factor people use in narrowing their choices for who to connect with, is how attractive the photos look, and then moving on from there to see how compatible the rest of the profile appears to be, on paper, so to speak.

I thought this was a pretty good deconstruction of Biden’s "Soul of the Nation" speech.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 4, 2022:
I saw clips of his speech too. Same as his reaction to Roe being overturned, he will cynically use it, instead of actually doing anything progressive, to let innocent people suffer as pawns for his midterm election efforts, which are half-hearted at best anyway, since we all know the DNC long ago quit caring about winning federal elections and instead raking in max corporate campaign money while caring only about serving them in between elections. I wish the two commentators would just let the speech play and interject their comments as it plays, rather than all the pontificating before they actually began playing it. On Free Speech TV, when they cover a major party speech like this, they just get right to it, commenting on the speech as it plays, so we can clearly see the contrast between how corporate media covers and comments on these speeches and how Free Speech TV covers them

The thing that women in the online dating game keep telling me, and I have no reason to doubt them, is that 95% of the men they encounter thru that are either just interested in meeting women for sex or that they want to move onto sex way too quickly, like on the first or second meeting with the woman. Fortunately for me, I am wired more the opposite way than the 95%, for what that's worth, but it doesn't seem to really matter, since on average I only end up meeting one or two new women per month thur Match. Guess I have way too many other traits, including average looks, that make me undateable or too undesireable for almost all the women who are average looking or better in my local online dating pool.

How dare reporters ask a Repub to justify their election by pinning them down on policy and trying to hold them accountable later on for not living up to their pre-election promises of what they'll do in office? Don't those reporters know that being a Repub pol means you only need to campaign on Fox News talking points about the Dems and other evil people that are ruining the country? The nerve of those reporters!

Well duh. To me they doth protest too much and are usually just covering something else up thru it, but unlike most voters, I am capable of critical thinking and reading between the lines of what they say, as well as comparing their words to their deeds. Most Americans, not so much, they take the words at face value, are not as smart, and sure as hell don't use critical thinking. Detecting nuance is beyond most people.

I agree with every word of it, and nothing will change until most eligible voters break out of the duopoly and start voting for only third party candidates in fed elections, until then, prepare for full out fascism.. Because the Dems will not campaign honestly on the issue of economic populism, the Repubs will continue to be allowed the opening of running on right wing populism by pushing fascism and false promises of economic populism under the cover of patriotism and a return to white supremecy. Honest left wing populism is a winning issue, but the Dems will never honestly run on and govern with it, because it would offend their corporate donors and winning elections are no longer their top priority.

Christian school forfeits football game against team with two girls on roster
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 29, 2022:
The same kind of thing happened all the time in my state, before girls high school wrestling became an official sanctioned girls sport. Before that, the girls would compete on their school's high school boys team and when they were set to wrestle a boy, the boy would usually forfeit the match rather than wrestle her, and suffer the humiliation of possibly losing. Another reason that boys would forfeit is if they were religious or conservative, and felt it was wrong to wrestle a girl with those norms.

Let's talk about access to higher education.... - Beau of the Fifth Column [youtube.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 28, 2022:
That is why in Europe, esp. in England, free college based on merit, rather than being able to afford it, and the rich have always hated it. And even in that merit system, the rich kids still get into the best colleges, thru their connections and thru sending their kids to the best prep schools, so they have maximum chances of doing well on the merit exams all kids take to get into the universities. So even then, there is little social mobility from the lower classes moving up to the higher classes thru education, as the better paying jobs still go to the richer kids thru their parents connections, same as here..

True that. With online dating, it's mostly all about looks. Many people on them, both men and women, don't even read most or even any of the profiles, just look at the photos and sort from there, except maybe the women that care about money and will reply to a man whose profile seems to indicate he is wealthy. With most singles on dating sites, you can have the greatest profile essay in the world, and it will make little difference if your photos don't seem impressive against the competition.. And I really pity you trying to date in Alabama. You can pretty much forget ever meeting anyone local to date from this site. It has so few members, who are so scattered throughout the US, that local dating is almost never an option.

My friends are all smart, highly educated people. What I really wish higher education would do is motivate them and others to finally consider breaking out of the duopoly and voting Blue No Matter Who, and instead start voting third party, at least in federal elections. Because until that starts happening, we will never get the radical change that we have been needing for decades, not "waiting until after this election, etc." like we keep getting told year after year. Incrementalism is not an acceptable choice or solution with the problems we face..

This guy looks, talks, and sounds just like the MAGA yahoos that I have seen around my town. I agree they are nuts and there is no point wasting breath or energy on them. They certainly have the authorities here intimidated and in my town, they are also part of the majority view, unfortunately. Most of their fellow Repubs are better mannered and more sane, but the same views are shared by most of my town. So I avoid them and keep a low profile. No doubt he is a former football player or wrestler who still uses steroids and is experiencing roid rage on a daily basis. And we wonder why nobody intelligent and decent wants to run or serve anymore on local bodies like school boards, country boards of supervisors, or city councils? Because they don't want to be subjected to listening to and being threatened by yahoos like this.. And their bullying, intimidating style means that those who don't agree with them feel too afraid and outnumbered to bother showing up and speaking out against them, so the vocal, organized bullies win the battle, even if they might actually be the minority of opinion in the community...

TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 26, 2022:
Hypocrisy, thy name is Republican... Giving government money and tax breaks to rich people is seen as righteous because they are seen as job creators, even tho we all know that is a myth.... Speaking of PPP loans, in the city where I live, one small businessman, who owns an arts movie theater, got a ton of loan money from the feds during early Covid under this program for the purpose of supposedly keeping his theater open and continuing to pay his employees, etc. Instead, he never reopened his theater after Covid hit, tho all his competitors here eventually did. I don't know if his loan was forgiven or not, but as far as I'm concerned, he is a crook and has cheated the taxpayers, but nothing is ever going to happen to him over it. I think he should have to give all that money back, but that's just my idealistic morality. I have no idea if he's a Repub, but he sure acts like one, typical greedhead businessman. There is another art house movie theater, a non-profit one, that is being started, after Covid hit, that is supposed to open soon, and if the crooked businessman reopens his theater, which I doubt he will, but if he does, I will boycott him and continue to spread the word about this crook. I hope the new art house theater puts him out of business for good, should they both be open this fall. But I doubt he will ever reopen, nor does he care what happens to his theater.

Trump says he stole the classified documents to put them in his Presidential Library.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 25, 2022:
After a disgraced crook like Nixon and a dumb chimp like W. getting Presidential Libraries, the bar is now low enough that even Trump will have and probably deserves one. But that doesn't mean that most decent, intelligent people will end up visiting it. Does Germany have something like that for Hitler, or Italy one for Mussolini? Or Spain one for Franco? Or Chile one for Pinochet?
It's all in how you look at it.

And for those of us who have lived years without good health insurance and access to health care, it's also called beating the odds. In my case, I have beat the odds, but I credit that mostly to having inherited good genetics and also having been an athlete when I was young. Otherwise, like most folks who go years without getting regular good medical care, my life expectancy would likely be only another dozen years or so before reaching my expiration date.

Typical hypocritical bullies. If pagans came to their churches on Sun. to protest, they would not only beat them, if they have guns, they would shoot them.. And the cops would do nothing, which is what I'm afraid will happen we have civil war here, when our side gets attacked, the cops and military will sit back and do nothing, at best. At worst, they will collude with the right wingers or join in. We will be on our own to defend ourselves. Which I will do if that time comes, I will fiercely defend myself and take as many of those pricks with me as I can...

I've been wishing for years that he would quit performing in public, as it has been an embarrassment since the early 90s. Let the bashing now begin......
