But I realize he is very rich and popular, and maybe that's an indicator of the problem... Buffet's music and his whole parrothead crowd is all about being drunk, mindless, and self-centered. I guess I am more of an old hippie and would instead prefer being stoned on weed and dropping out that way, rather than at some drunken party of parrothead yuppies or smug, well-heeled Boomers.....

TomMcGiverin comments on Apr 24, 2022:
I see nothing wrong with what the coach was doing until it appears to have become a de facto requirement for his players to join the bandwagon in order to feel accepted by the coach and the rest of the team. At that point, it became a religious requirement for the players on the team, even if it was an informal requirement. That made it an improper blend of church and state in a public school sports program.

I hear and feel your pain. I am living a similar situation. All I can suggest is what I try my best to do, which is, keep as busy as possible and hang on as tight as possible with my local friends. I try to call them and talk to them as frequently as I can reach them. On top of that, I try to get together with them as well as often as they have time for. Our lives are not easy when we have no partner and live in an alienating environment. It's enough to depress anybody.

So true! The Repubs automatically label any Dem as having a "left wing socialist agenda", whether it's Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden, the latter being a center right centrist who is completely beholden to the corporate agenda and the status quo. And the corporate media repeats these labels without any comment or criticism. In Europe, to be clear, Biden would be labeled center right at best, but our media is totally complicit with the Rebup agenda, same as with the DNC's neoliberal corporate agenda.

About time.
TomMcGiverin comments on Apr 20, 2022:
I'm not surprised by this. Years ago I saw a powerful Brit film called "I, Daniel Blake", which was a fictional story based on research about the Department Of Work And Pensions, about a middle-aged man who suffers a heart attack, is unable to work, but is denied disability pension and forced to go thru the hamster wheel of pretending to seek work so he can at least collect unemployment benefits. The movie shows how cruel the system became after the Thatcher regime and also parallels what happened in America during the same time under Reagan as the safety net was destroyed, first thru de-institutionalization of the mentally ill and disabled, then with the shredding of support programs in the community, which were supposed to help those sent away from institutions. At the end of "I, Daniel Blake", the Blake character finally gets his appeal hearing on his disability pension case, month after being denied, but he dies of a heart attack the day of the hearing. The film also features a friend of his on unemployment, a younger woman, who is reduced to seeking work from an escort service in order to provide for her two children. Needless to say, when the system makes life so hopeless for the unemployed, mentally ill, and disabled in America and the UK, I'm surprised there aren't way more suicides than we already have.....
This might be a much more effective and less destructive way.

Report: Senators and Former Staffers Say Dianne Feinstein Cannot Fulfill Her Duties – Mother Jones
TomMcGiverin comments on Apr 19, 2022:
Another reason given to promote term limits is that it would reduce corruption and the bribery of campaign money, but I doubt term limits would change that. Anybody that wants to run for congress or president and win these days needs to sell their soul in advance in order to raise the money needed to win in the first place. Same with staying in office and winning re-election. So limiting terms does nothing as long as the system requires and supports legalized bribery in order to win federal office. And both major parties support this status quo, so only third party candidates winning federal office is ever going to change that.

The answer is NO! While there is still war as something possible in a socialist world, it is likely to be less frequent. With capitalism, there will always be war as a constant thing, because the system profits from the industry, which depends on governments to buy its products. Socialist countries would be less likely to buy the industry's products, and would instead spend their money on providing for the basic needs of its people.

That was exactly the situation with a government job I once had at a university. Even tho we had a union, a public employees one, to represent us, it could do nothing about favoritism between the bosses and co-workers who were lazy kiss-asses. It quickly became clear that hard work would only be rewarded, if you weren't one of the favored kiss-asses, with giving you a bigger workload, and no accompanying increase in pay or benefits, since those were collectively bargained. Since I always refused to kiss ass in my jobs, I had no motivation to work hard or go extra on anything except my own pride in a job well done. But as soon as I realized the job was very physically demanding and would wear out my body, as it did, within a few years, I wised up and did only enough to get by and perform satisfactorily. It always amazes me how many workers either play the kiss ass game or work themselves into the grave like suckers, because, either way, hard work by itself never gets rewarded in most workplaces.

The majority are into country music, family life, conservative Christianity, Republican politics, and lots of social drinking. I am all for stores and restaurants, including grocery stores, not being open on holidays that are traditionally big times for families. Americans have little balance between work, family, and leisure compared to most of the developed world, and all of that is for the enrichment of the tiny ownership class at the top. So even tho I don't support religion, I do support the closure of businesses on those holidays, as well as not having 24 hour stores. There really is no good reason for them, other than excess profits.

Probably describes me more than I want to admit. I know how to be friendly with women in a platonic, non-sexual way, but whenever I try to flirt or talk to a woman I feel is very attractive-looking, I get tongue-tied and feel awkward, and it's probably very obvious to them. I just have little sexual or romantic confidence in myself, so flirting doesn't work for me if I have any real romantic or sexual interest in them. As the young folks would say, I have no "game" when it comes to talking to women with something at stake for me. It's too bad that most of the guys with "game" regarding women are players and assholes, but most women seem to eat that up and don't mind, until they get treated bad and then generalize it to all guys. They want men to have lots of confidence and game in flirting with them, but the truth is most of the men who have lots of that are not good or nice guys.

I doubt they would boot her, but their customer care team would probably send her a nastygram e-mail telling her to keep her political opinions either to herself or be more polite. I have never gotten that sort of shit for a reply, but I have encountered several who think like her and hide their politics in their profile by either saying nothing about their views or else they list themselves as an Independent or a Moderate politically. That last label is really misleading. I guess they either don't think it thru or else they are willing to date a liberal providing the guy is hot enough physically and or has plenty of bucks they'll spend on them, so they don't want to blow the deal in advance by tipping off their toxic political views. I realize this is somewhat off-topic, but tonite at a gas station, I ran into a pump that had been decaled by Trumpers with pro-Trump and anti-Biden stickers about the high gas prices. I told the clerk about it and they laughed and said it has been a regular thing lately. They remove the decals and more get put on later. My town is mostly Trumpers, so I'm not surprised. I didn't remove them because the pumps are private business property and they have tons of cameras out there.

In any comedy club or bar that had some class, those two bitches would have been kicked out of the room, but in Congress, they suffer no consequences. Aren't the seargents at arms supposed to deal with shit like that? Oh, I forgot, that only applies to non-member people who are visiting congress. Can't have the peasants making trouble for the lawmakers...

Man kills 3 children, 1 other and himself at California church : NPR
TomMcGiverin comments on Mar 1, 2022:
I'm guessing the church, like most churches, doesn't allow weapons in the church, but they didn't search him when he came in. The church was probably a neutral site for the supervised visit with his kids and he lost it mentally before he came there. I bet the church will think twice in the future before allowing itself to be used as a parental visiting site for estranged parents. At least he had enough class to kill himself and save the taxpayers the cost of a trial and his imprisonment, too bad he was selfish enough to take everybody else with him.

If the Russian army stays there long enough, wouldn't be surprised if Putin sends some prostitutes there on the sly, to prevent fraternizing between the troops and the local women.

A recent post from our little community @Unity has spurred a question in my tiny but hungry mind.
TomMcGiverin comments on Feb 27, 2022:
In elections I vote for policy first. Secondly, I vote based on the record of the person. In other words, does their record match up with what they say they will do if elected, because if they don't match up on policy and record, then they are just another untrustworthy sellout who, like Reingmond said below, will say one thing during the election campaign and then do something else once they are elected. So few voters bother to compare the two and think critically when they vote. Finally, I look at the candidate's character. Are they truthful and loyal to their constituencies and their political allies? Are they greedy and seeking power just to get rich and be powerful, or do they care more about helping the masses?
