Right now, where I live, it's just the young, even tho most people here are Trumpers. It seems the older Trump supporters finally started doing the right thing out of sheer self preservation, not because they cared about others. There are exceptions, like the old ladies in my condo community who play cards a couple times a week sitting close together around a table without masks. But no doubt they have all been vaxed by now due to their age. I also see the staff people who work around my community never wearing masks, and they are all older folks too.

@Happycanuck Where I live it is a huge issue with most women who have kids, even grown adult kids who live far away. Most of them have no interest in dating a man without kids because these women are very traditional-minded and family-oriented rather than couple-oriented or independent from their families. There is a huge lack of balance, it seems, with most of these Midwestern women compared to the lifestyles of most women who live on either coast, who maintain connections with their children and grandchildren, but don't make it the center of their lives.

That's really interesting that the women are bringing up sex first. Here in Iowa, I hear all the time from women how much they hate men bringing up sex first or the men seeming too aggressive on that front. Same with women comfortably talking about possibly agreeing to a FWB. I'm glad that Batch has added a free video chat feature to their site, so that, with Covid, people who have traded messages can video chat to see if there is chemistry or physical attraction beyond looking at photos before they have to risk meeting in person with Covid. Batch has said that they will keep the video chat feature even after Covid settles down. It is available to both paid and free members as long as both people have sent at least one message to the other person.

TomMcGiverin replies on Apr 12, 2021:
@Deb57 I believe you and your open-mindedness is very admirable. But I think you are quite an anomaly. For every person like you, male or female, I think there are tens or even a hundred that we both would call shallow when it comes to looks. After all the negative experiences you've had with LTR partners, it makes perfect sense that you should only care about character at this point. It shows that you have learned and grown from your mistakes in past choices. Unfortunately, most people, men and women, keep choosing either the same dysfunctional personality type, or even different dysfunctional types, with a different name and package each time. And the common thread in all of it is them, but they will never admit it or seek to change it about themselves. And that's the main reason that in online dating, I go out of my way to put most of my effort and attention towards women that, like me, are widowed. But the problem is that in my age group, they make up only about 20% of the dating pool in my area on Batch. It's probably about the same % with other dating sites, unless you are talking about one that is mostly made up of people much older than me.

TomMcGiverin replies on Apr 10, 2021:
It has happened plenty to me, Deb. Lots of women are willing to be friends with me, but would never consider dating me because I'm bald, not muscular or athletic, and not rich. Women gain weight with age, men go bald, gain weight, and lose their muscles, the reaction by the respective genders is the same. You become invisible, asexual, and out of consideration sexually and romantically. So, like Sticks says below, it goes both ways, not men doing that more than women do. I think most men and women are pretty much the same in this way and the man you were talking with was just more honest than most people are, of both genders. I still have most of my messages with Batch not even read by the women I reach out to, much less have them view my profile, and it's undoubtedly because they simply look at my main profile pic and conclude I am not attractive-looking enough to even bother reading my message. So much for all the platitudes and cliches I see in women's profiles about how important honesty, integrity, communication, etc. are to them in seeking a partner. Yeah, all those things matter as long as the guy looks and dresses like Brad Pitt and he makes six figures. Having said that, I don't think that having no attraction or interest in dating someone because their looks aren't appealing to you is the same thing as treating them as a non-person. And I have made it clear multiple times that I think you are an attractive woman and a catch. But the generalization holds true for both genders and in online dating almost nobody is on there to meet people for and create platonic friendships. Most of us already have plenty of friends before we brave the harsh world of the dating scene. And we'd better have them if we are not above average looking, because the amount of rejection would be unbearable without the emotional support of some friends to help give us continued validation and reinforcement that we have something to offer others. We enter the dating arena because we want to add something sexual and deeper to our lives than what we have in our existing friendships.

@HippieChick58 You are a rare gem in that respect, Paula. I do find that women here on Agnostic., compared to the mainstream population on sites like Batch, do tend to put more emphasis on brains and heart than looks, but even here there are exceptions, such as when I first joined on here and messaged a handful of women who ranged from average looking to above average looking. And struck out with all of them, never meeting a one of them. My guess is that, because they were all from Iowa, and thus, more part of the mainstream culture than most women on Agnostic, who tend to live in more progressive areas than Iowa, they have the same mindset about looks as the women on Batch in my area. Also, none of them appeared to be that interested in the atheist community in general, as they all left the site for good within a year or so after joining and also never got above level 2, seldom participating in the forums.

Glad to hear you still have a few good prospects. You must have some bucks to pay for three different dating sites, but I suppose it keeps you busy and is an interesting hobby even if you don't find someone. I would be interested in hearing what feedback you are getting from the women on Match about why they are not interested in you for dating. I sometimes ask why to women who reject me as a potential match or view my profile more than once before never replying to my initial message. The reasons are usually helpful and also usually seem genuine rather than a lame excuse. The whole online dating process is a fascinating study in what makes people tick. I can only speak for myself, but personally I am not thick skinned enough to always ask women why they are not interested in me, both because I am not interested in adding to the rejection I already experience and also because in most cases their reasons are not a surprise to me and thus don't add much to my ongoing learning process. I also find it interesting that you haven't said anything about whether your having children has been or not been a reason that women were interested in meeting you for dating. In my experience, esp. with the women who do have kids, that seems to be a pretty common requirement for them as far as who they choose to connect with, even at our age when the kids are all grown and gone in most cases. I continue to find, esp. in my local dating pool, which may be more family-oriented than yours as far as the women and their choices, I continue to pay the price for being child-free by choice, same as I did when I was a young man, by being passed up for family men and guys who want or had kids. It continues to puzzle me why that continues to matter so much to women long after the age where they are done having and raising kids.

@HippieChick58 Agreed. I think most of us, male and female, that do not qualify as above average looking, have some anger at how we are treated in our superficial Kardashian society. The fact that I am much older than the author of the article is probably another reason why she chose that word rather than unattractive. When it comes to sex and attraction, I often feel like I am from another planet compared to younger folks today, esp. with their trend towards beginning the dating process with a "sex interview" in which they use that to decide whether to bother going on with the rest of the dating and discovery process, rather than the other way around, as I have always been taught to conduct it.

Corporate Dems support the same policies, as do their donors, but they lie to the voters and pretend to support unions and workers at election time, then throw them under the bus as soon as the voting is over.

@CurvyWoman You'll have to just take my word for it, but after enough rejection, because men usually have to make the first move so much of the time, whether it's messaging in online dating or approaching a woman in public, even having confidence is pretty hard to do. Esp. if you are at all a sensitive man. And yet, sensitive men make the best partners. So there is the paradox. Women want to meet a man who is confident from the outset, even if he is less likely to be what they need and want for the long haul.

No offense, but you appear to be average-looking, and average in other ways, so, based on my experience with dating sites and those of other men I've talked to that are in our looks category, on average you will probably end up meeting about six women in person for each six months on the site. That has been my experience, but yours may be better simply because you live in a better dating pool for non-believers than I do in Iowa. I hope I am right about that last part. Another big factor, at least in my local dating pool, is whether you have kids, even if they are adults and gone, because in my dating pool, it seems like only dads need apply with the vast majority of women I run across, who are divorced with kids. They want someone who matches up with them on both kids and divorce. And it's that last part that confounds me, as a widowed man, that so many of them seem hell-bent on repeating the same choices-dating only fellow divorced people-and expecting different results in their next relationship.

@MsHoliday You are ten years older than me, so that may explain it. I wish that I had four women out there for each of me in my age group. I recently messaged a woman on Batch that was 70, 8 years older than me and at the top of my age range for dating. She also happens to be a French speaker, possibly also French born, and even tho I explained in my message that my late wife was much older than me and that I was emotionally mature for my age, she never replied to me. So one thing to consider is that you might want to try a man or two that is several years younger than you. Because not all of us are immature for our ages or even normally mature for our age. It's also interesting that even tho I have messaged a few French speaking women over the last few years, none of them ever replied to me. I wonder what it is about me that puts them off.

TomMcGiverin replies on Mar 30, 2021:
I can say from personal experience, that sometimes there are job markets where the best you can do is work for a nutjob, because, as in my case, you are too old for the job market and too expensive for the labor pool you are competing against, as I was as someone nearing age 50 in a college town labor market. Sometimes the only jobs available then are bad jobs for bad employers. And, in those circumstances, you can either put up with it or move away. Driving long distance for a low-paying job isn't worth it either.

For everybody in the middle class on down, life expectancy has been dropping for the last two decades, as health care becomes more elusive and expensive for everyone below the upper middle class, as well as the stress that the classes below them have been feeling as their real income drops and their jobs have become more endangered or lost, to automation, outsourcing or downsizing. As far as the poor whites who still believe that capitalism is their friend, you can't fix stupid. There are also lots of poor and working class whites who are fine with accepting the injustices of capitalism as long as they have groups to look down on and hate, such as racial minorities and undoc workers, gays, etc. They compensate for being poor and powerless by self-medicating with a false sense of superiority.

Also, the plant floor area was barely heated in the winter. They had no machines out there precious or new enough to protect. And yet the guy who owned the company was worth 78 mil.. I always fantasized about killing him. And to boot, he was a huge donor to the state Repub Party and did lots of business with the state selling them land for government buildings and projects. He also openly hired undoc aliens so he could get away with the lowest wages possible for low skill employees. But, of course, he was so politically connected that ICE never raided the place even tho it was an open secret there were illegal aliens working there.

People on the right will always be able to get away with that type of action without crackdowns by the cops and military. We need to be ready for actual war in the streets if we get aggressive, because they are not going to just back down, even if there are tens of millions in the streets. Now, talking about the dating game, that's another matter, as it has given me plenty to feel cynical and bitter about, probably because it is mostly filled by divorced people who are mostly bitter and cynical about relationships and love in general. Thus, they play a lot of games, project a lot of their stuff onto other people, and push most people away with their many defenses, at least, those are my theories on why the dating game sucks so much. I have a feeling if the dating sites were just widowed people, things would be much more positive and certainly more kinder.

Time is both an objective reality, measured by the movement of the sun and the moon, and also a subjective experience. They differ widely.

@FearlessFly That's true. Hadn't considered him.
Well none of the ladies on this site who I've messaged have replied back.

Join the freakin' club, bro. I struck out with all the few women that were still on this site from my local area soon after I joined three years ago. A couple of them traded messages with me, but I never met any of them in person. Since then, no new women ever joined from my area. I may get bashed ...

@editor20 It may not be necessary, but I prefer someone who has most of the same characteristics as me.
