With the exception of widowed people, those on the market are either the discarded, the survivors of failed relationships, and finally, those who are either so terminally neurotic or commitment phobic that they are still never-married after 40. So, you would think that the most attractive items in the thrift store of dating after 40 would be the widowed singles. I am here to tell you, that's certainly not the case, at least for this widowed survivor of a long and positive marriage. Also, I am totally with the guy here on free meals for women who are just beginning to know you. I wonder if some of them are just on dating sites to get the meals, well, I'm only half serious about that last remark.... BTW, this video was posted a while back on Agnostic.
abortion and women and religion
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 16, 2020:
The practical effect of abortion bans is that they only affect poor women. All other women are still able to travel and get abortions, same as they did before Roe, but Repubs have never cared about poor women and those women seldom vote for Repubs, if they even vote at all. They're too busy trying to survive and care for their kids.

Why did covid19 spike so high in October in France, is it because the weather is cooler and more ...
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 15, 2020:
Not to sound callous, but the spikes in cases where I live really won't affect me unless they result in lockdowns of things like barbers, massage therapists and dentists from being open for business. I remain in my isolated state either way, rarely going out to shop, see my investment advisor or attend medical appointments. I hope I can continue to get a massage once a month and get a head shave every two months, but if I can't I'll get by. Just need to get my teeth cleaned next month without the dental offices being closed again for Covid and then I'll be ok on that until summer. By then Covid should no longer be an issue keeping dental offices closed or elective medical proceedures delayed.

I don't think it makes me paranoid to say that both Trump and Biden are hoping this will kill off enough older people that whoever wins won't have as much of a Social Security expense for the feds to pay out in the next decade, since their rich donors don't need SS and don't want the income cap lifted so they would have to pay more.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 14, 2020:
What a bald-faced lie. Even Bernie doesn't want that-much less the rest of the corporate Dems and the DNC- and Gomer knows that, as does anyone who's honest and paying attention. But none of that ever stops Repubs from using lies and scare tactics to trick voters into thinking all Dems are not only rabid socialists, but communists. And the sad thing is that it works on some voters while the corporate media does nothing to correct it or contradict this propaganda.
I'm watching the Amy Coney Barrett hearings and getting sick.
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 12, 2020:
It's not about the lawyer class getting too much power, it's about the white evangelicals getting so much clout with the Repubs on judicial appointments and abortion policy. The Repubs are glad to at least give them rhetoric and judicial appointments in exchange for their votes and money because it doesn't cost their corporate and fat cat donors anything at all to do so. Those donors don't give a damn about abortion policy or having judges that are religious nuts because their women and daughters will always be able to get abortions.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 6, 2020:
None of the issues in that chart addressed economics or income/wealth equality. Without surveying people on those types of issues, you can't really say who is or is not a progressive, much less where they stand as a group. As far as I'm concerned, if you are not for a fair economy for all, along with reducing the inequality of wealth and income as well as providing a European type safety net for all, you are not a progressive, just a weak-ass liberal who only cares about being PC and feeling smug that you are better than a right-winger. And if that is you, I loathe you just as much as a right winger because you are selfish and won't support anything that might actually cost you anything or inconvenience you personally. Liberalism as a political fashion statement. The survey also said nothing about climate change or saving the environment, but I've already made my point and said enough. The survey matches my personal observations of many Unitarians, who are also atheists. They are very progressive when it comes to PC and the environment, but not really very progressive when it comes to economic issues. In that sense, they are much like Libertarians in wanting to keep all their stuff and money, holding onto that upper-middle class lifestyle at all costs.

I thought that Chris Wallace, being from Fox News, was surprisingly fair as moderator, but at the same time, he was overwhelmed by Trump and had no control over the debate and Trump. If they both go ahead with the other two debates, the upcoming moderators need to regain some control over the debates and that has to include the moderator cutting off Trump's mic when he continues to interrupt Biden and not restoring it until Biden's time is up and it's Trump's turn to speak again. But if that is proposed by the future moderators and Trump hears about it, I doubt he will go ahead and participate under those conditions. This may well be the only debate if a serious effort is made to improve things for the final two debates.

I have also found that emotionally healthy hetero people tend to have some friendships with queer people as well as platonic friendships with opposite sex heteros. Having friendships with queer people of the same sex helps hetero people learn that relationships don't have to be mainly about sex and sexual attraction. It helps people learn to not be threatened by sexual attraction that is not mutual and to be clear about their boundaries and secure in their own identity and orientation. Those people tend to make better relationship partners once they do choose a monogamous relationship. However, I have found that most hetero people who have not had any friendships with queer people and have also been raised in traditional religious homes have problems with jealousy regarding platonic opposite sex friendships by their partner once they begin a commited relationship with someone. Too much conditioning from their background that makes them distrustful.

After reading the article a second time, I would also say that religious fundies hate atheists for the same types of reasons, namely that we pose a cognitive dissonance threat to them that maybe everything they have ever been taught and believe is a lie. Also, they resent our thinking that we are or might be just as morally good and ethical as them, maybe more so. It bugs them that we might be just as deserving of heaven as them, if that existed and were solely based on works and morality. For that matter, economic conservatives hate leftists because we expose them as the selfish greedheads they are.
"Liberals hate leftists for the same reason a wife who is informed that her husband is cheating on ...
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 27, 2020:
I would add that liberals who hate leftists pointing out how corrupt the Dem party is, esp. its leaders, are not so much upset to be told the system is not working for them. They are upset because the leftists truthfully and correctly point out that the system is not working for anyone who is living at less than the upper-middle class. The liberals usually are at that level on the economic ladder and don't like being told they might be sellouts or at best indifferent to the economic hardships and struggles of the lower classes than them. Hence, the inspiration for the old Phil Ochs song, mainly that the liberals feel like simply saying they are a liberal and that they support all the lower class and identity politics struggles out to be enough for them to feel righteously smug and comfortable that they are good people who are always on the right side, but sorry, to us socialists and progressives that's not enough. Being on the right side of the class war is by far the most important area in order to call yourself one of the good guys. You have to be willing to invest yourself in real equality by supporting a fair economy, which will never happen without socialist leaders and socialist policies. Neoliberalism won't ever cut it in bringing that about.

I don’t ever copy and paste other people’s statuses.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 24, 2020:
Most of the Covid spread these days is because of the young adults who are usually asymptomatic and also know they are at low risk to die or get seriously ill from it. So they are now going on with their lives the same as they did before Covid. Totally self-centered. Meanwhile, almost everybody who is over 60 or even 50, or has a serious health problem, has figured out that they need to self quarantine as much as possible until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment available to them. So the latter group is living like second class citizens while the young can enjoy all the re-opened bars and restaurants and other entertainment options. I can accept and live with that status as an older adult, but what I really resent is these young adults continuing to go about their lives with no caution while also going to grocery stores and refusing to wear masks there, all because they are being selfish. Those are the only places I have to encounter young adults and it's not asking too damn much for them to mask up for those stores where they will encounter older people, including store staff. Unfortunately the grocery stores are too chickenshit or uncaring about their staff to require masks, at least where I live. So I have to either take my chances being around unmasked young adults there or go during the geezer hour where masks are required. So much for enjoying the reward of retirement so I can sleep in every day. But even with the geezer hour, the stores are not protecting their workers by not requiring masks so they can be chickenshit and not deal with angry younger customers who won't wear masks. There is already plenty of resentment between Boomers and Millenials and this behavior by so many is not going to help. It's certainly something I will remember for the rest of this decade.

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 19, 2020:
I'm thinking it may well stick around after Covid is passed on, but it will depend on how much it increases prices for the dating sites or how much it costs if it's sold as an add-on feature. I know it would be an attractive feature for women if it allowed them to chat without having to give the man their phone number or e-mail addy early on in the process. That would be the main appeal, getting to chat in real time with a prospect without the risk or stalking or harassment later. As a male, I'm not afraid of giving out my phone number or e-mail after a reasonable amount of time trading messages with someone thru a dating site early on, but then again I've never been stalked or had to worry about my personal safety from anyone I've met thru the dating process.
Dating During a Pandemic: 'Love Is Not Canceled'
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 19, 2020:
There will always be exceptions, such as the people mentioned in the article, even among older singles who have more health risk by meeting people to date during Covid. Probably most of those people taking the risk are just too lonely to resist risking their health to meet prospective partners. But I still sense that most people, esp. in the over 60 age group, esp. women, who tend to be less desperate and more health sensible than men, are still choosing to sit this out until Covid is over. Otherwise, why would all the dating sites be offering such huge discounts now?

I can only imagine the amount of rage that most unwanted kids feel by the time they grow up, esp. males. No doubt they can sense that they were not wanted by their parent or parents, and that would undoubtedly explain at least some violent criminals, esp. serial killers.

Country Radio (Not me, just something horrible I saw on FB🙄)

Sounds like you got to experience what I so far only dream of in nightmares, namely that when I die I go to my own personal version of hell- a place where the only radio stations are country music format done karaoke style (not that I have any aversion to karaoke) and those stations as well as all the other humans there are Trumpers. I hope you are able to escape your personal hell sometime soon by avoiding that station. If you can't find another one you like, you will have to do what most of us hipsters here in Iowa do, namely pay for satellite radio, keep some CDs in your vehicle to play, or play your smart-phone's music thru your vehicle's system. Your story reminds me of what happened in my local area way back in the mid 1990s. We had a really cool AAA-Eclectic station(Adult Alternative Album format, as they say in the radio biz). One morning I woke up and tuned into it to find that the station had been sold and was now, wait for it, Lazer 103.3, which was now a Metal Rock format. Yup, music for meathead fans of Black Sabbath etc., and other metal groups.. That was when I began listening to public radio for anything better as well as local commercial stations that had pop/rock formats. But mostly, it meant bringing tapes or CDs with me whenever I had any long car trips outside the local area. I now have the money that I could afford satellite radio, but why pay for it when I almost am never in my car for more than a half hour at a time? If you are still having trouble getting over it and my suggestions don't help, you can always follow the advice in the movie Animal House and " start drinking heavily" or start heavy drug use, whatever works for you......

I guess that means we are entitled to celebrate Trump's death whenever it may occur in the future. I know I celebrated both the deaths of Reagan and Thatcher, two of the most evil leaders in my lifetime. I also look forward to the death of Dick Cheney.
Spot the difference.

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 19, 2020:
I'm not surprised that there are way more men than women who are declared non-believers. I will probably get bashed as sexist for saying this, but I think it's because of gender differences regarding how women are more relationally-oriented than men. In the sense that women are generally more concerned with seeking and maintaining relationships with a community and network of friends and relatives than men. And thus, they are less likely than men to go out on a limb and risk isolation or alienation by taking such a non-conformist path as non-belief. Because such a path means being so far outside of the mainstream that it will be much more challenging for a woman (or man) to find a community or network of like-minded people who will provide fellowship and some kind of church education for their children. So my guess is that women more than men will knuckle under and keep their non-belief to themselves or in denial so they can reap the social benefits of involvement with believer churches and religious organizations. Men are more willing to buck the mainstream and go without those benefits than women because they are less relation-oriented as well as less child-oriented.
I think they can filibuster to stop trump's Supreme Court appointment. [en.m.wikipedia.org].
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 19, 2020:
It would be nice. The Repubs have been hypocritically using the fillibuster way more than the Dems in recent decades, while the Dems are usually too chickenshit to use it, which shows they are really not that much of an opposition party to the Repubs.
Hard to argue with that

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 19, 2020:
Not to worry. The SC won't overturn Roe v. Wade. They care too much about the Repubs being able to win elections and know that if they did, the Repubs would lose so many female voters that they would be doomed in future elections. Otherwise, they would have done it decades ago as they have had the votes for it as far back as the last three decades. On the other hand, they will use the SC for every other kind of ratfuckery short of repealing the whole ACA, also because that would lose elections for the Repubs, who have no plan for how they would replace it.
Thanks for trying to hang on, Justice RBG.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 18, 2020:
If that comes to pass, then there's nothing left to do but get in the streets and revolt, whether violently or not, because if it's just allowed to stand, then fascism will be out in the open and tolerated. After that, further elections will be pointless once that precedent is set.
So.
