This guy lays it out in fine fashion! [youtube.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 13, 2020:
I already knew that. Once you are a middle aged adult, your dating pool is pretty much filled with rejects and leftovers, that is until you get old enough to be age appropriate for the dating pool of most widowed people, somewhere in the late 60s on up. But even then, it can be tough whether you are male or female because even tho the women outnumber the men, by that age many of the women who are widowed have had enough of caretaking partners and children and decide they are fine with going it alone until death. Such is life.... Reminds me of the old SNL sketch with Jon Lovitz giving dating advice to women on how they can snag a suitable man if they just " Lower your standards....". This comedian is right and succinct when he says that the only pic most people want to see in a profile is one with the person on a scale naked with a bank statement, altho I and most people would probably rather prefer a bathing suit instead of naked....
Heckuva job, DNC.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 13, 2020:
Tweedle dee-Tweedle dum...The whole point of the major parties doing this every four years is to continually decrease voter turnout, demoralize the public into tuning out, and thus cause the public to pay less and less attention to how they are lying to us, screwing us, and stealing from us more every year... It is Mission Accomplished each time..
There is a great deal of evil to choose form concerning Biden.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 13, 2020:
Too many good ones to choose from. If anything, it makes the argument for me that Biden has been sowing evil in our government much longer than Trump and thus maybe deserves as much hatred and blame as Trump for what's wrong in America. Remind me again how he is a better choice than Trump?

How many people feel they live in the wrong part of the country to meet like-minded people?

OK, I do sincerely hope people don't overreact to this and bail out.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 12, 2020:
Because the community senate thread doesn't observe blocks, it's amazing how many members I see here agreeing with me about censorship, banning, and suspending members (they and I seem to be against it) that I have blocked long ago. Not that it makes me want to unblock any of them......Very funny and ironic that way..
OK, I do sincerely hope people don't overreact to this and bail out.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 12, 2020:
I would never expect a large community of highly intelligent, strongly-opinionated and mostly also highly educated, all very independent people to end up being very harmonious. More like trying to herd cats. I'm sorry the admin. had higher hopes than I would have had for the community. I much prefer an open forum with honest, even if heated, expression of opinions and experiences because anything else will result in less learning from each other and prevent any authentic bonds of community. As long as we have the blocking option, I, for one, don't need censorship or sanctions against other members that loathe me. I suspect most other members feel the same way. I am a socialist, but I abhor PC running amok and people being banned or muzzled for not toeing the correct party line, no matter who is setting it. After I block someone, I don't ever give a second or later thought to what that member may be saying about me on these boards. It really doesn't matter to me because the other members on here have probably already made their judgement of me and will either accept or reject the comments made about me behind my back after I have blocked that person. If they are concerned about something said about me behind my back, they can always PM me and let me know about it, but I probably won't care anyway. We do not need to start banning people left and right. One of the main reasons I have left the church-Unitarian- that I used to attend was their over-indulgence in PC and their overall lack of honesty with each other and lack of tolerance for disagreement with the dominant mindset. I do not want to see that replicated here.
Goodbye message from OwlInaSack: Admin has suspended my account (I’m not sure why) – but ...
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 12, 2020:
Damn.. I really enjoyed his comments and political insights. I'm somewhat surprised, but not at all shocked by his suspension since his strong comments and viewpoints seemed to really anger some members here. I guess the rules concerning civility on these forum boards have changed. Too bad the rules haven't been spelled out clearly anytime recently, at least not that I've noticed. I'm always against using an iron fist first rather than later if people haven't already been warned or informed what will get them suspended or banned before the punishment is meted out. Does anybody know what he may have been referring to when he says " The new direction for Agnostic"?

TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 11, 2020:
So I guess they both made up later or Harris was just posturing or lying back in the debate months ago when she practically called Biden a racist to his face over his opposition to busing? Both her and Joe disgust me, everything with them is theater and false advertising. Biden said he would probably pick a black woman and so he did. Just more bullshit identity poliitics like we have been getting from the Dem party for decades, when what we need instead is honest class warfare against the rich and corporations, affordable healthcare for all as a right, a Green New Deal, an end to permanent wars for empire, and cancellation of trade deals and treaties that only benefit multinational corporations. But we will never get these when most Americans settle for identity politics and culture war issues as being adequate reasons to vote Dem over Repub instead of voting third party.

How liberal flakes led us to Trump: [theatlantic.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 10, 2020:
Nothing new here. In a nutshell, the majority of the college-educated Boomers, including some former hippies, started selling out in the 80s, becoming self-centered, socially-callous yuppies. As such, they became members of the Coordinator Class, who make up most of the top 10% group of Americans in income and wealth. These people didn't notice or care at all that the super rich in the top 1% started to rob the rest of America of the vast majority of it's income and wealth because their life in the top 10% was so cushy for them and their kids. Nowadays they are starting to see that the economy being run to only benefit the super rich is no longer working in any way that can provide stability and security in the future, even for them. So they are beginning to see that the super rich are more their class enemies than their allies, that is, if they want to live in any kind of peaceful type of democracy instead of a totalitarian police state with only a tiny elite, a small Coordinator class, and everyone else in a Hunger Games underclass.

Here’s a question for those of you who love and listen to music.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 9, 2020:
I agree with your comments. The truly great are not only able to sound as good live as on studio recordings, they are also able to keep performing well for years after their first album. It's pathetic that so many contemporary singers, especially in the country music genre, can't even sing on pitch, even in the studio, much less live, and need to use Auto-Tune both on their recordings and live. They have no business being professional singers. Quite a while ago I saw a documentary called 20 Feet From Stardom, a movie about background singers, where one of the singers spilled the secret that nowadays most record companies budget 25K$ on a record album just for "tuning", in which they correct the pitch problems in the studio of the lead singer's off-key singing. The singer being interviewed, who had a a long career singing background on studio albums, said that this was not the case until the last couple decades, because in the old days all the singers being recorded could sing on pitch without studio alteration. This phenomena is part of why I hate country music, firstly because almost all of them, male or female, sing in that sickeningly nasal style of voice quality along with all the obligatory twang, and secondly because so many of the contemporary country singers are really not that good at singing, but they are able to be successful and popular getting by instead on their looks and Auto-Tune.
While on a long drive recently, I was listening to a show on NPR about immortality and time.
TomMcGiverin comments on Aug 9, 2020:
The main reasons I would not want to be immortal, even if my health did not drastically fail or get worse with age, is that I would get really depressed at all my friends dying and leaving me. Secondly, the world keeps getting worse every decade and I would not want to be around to live out a dystopian sci fi story.

Let's get real about online dating.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 23, 2020:
If the US had appropriate enforcement of antitrust laws, then dating sites would have to actually compete with each other and thus provide decent service to their customers. Instead, as the above post states, the industry has followed the same pattern as most American industries and ended up with little competition as conglomerates buy and swallow up all their competition. This could have been avoided, but no doubt congress sees dating sites as non-essential businesses, so competition or government regulation is not a priority. I also think that the dating sites have gotten worse in the last couple years and it's probably due to increased monopolization in the industry.

"Dating for real people".
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 20, 2020:
Until Covid is over, my view is that the dating scene of singles meeting new people to date will be taking a pause among my age group and older. The only dating scene that will continue to go on will be at bars among young adults, because they are at relatively less risk from Covid and are the age group that right now is continuing to visit bars and restaurants, thus leading to the surge in Covid. Older people like me will continue to pretty much stay home and not mix socially in public. Intelligent people will not bother with dating sites to attempt to meet and date other singles during Covid, because it's obvious that few people, esp. my age or older, will be willing to take the risk of meeting someone from the site in person, when all they really know before that about the other person is that person's word about their infection status and self-protection habits around Covid. The dating sites are probably having to really cut their prices to get any suckers to sign up and pay. My guess is that younger adults who are only or mainly interested in using dating sites or bars to hook up will probably continue to keep doing what they were doing pre-Covid because they are willing to risk their health in the first place, whether it's STDs or Covid. People over 45, not so much...
On political correctness. It is not what you think, and it is dangerous. [theintercept.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 20, 2020:
Most of the culture wars in America involve PC and I agree that most of the culture war issues do matter and are about important things that should be changed, but my main beef about PC is how it's used by both major parties and the corporate media to cynically distract the masses from even more important issues like class warfare, corporate rule of our government, and plutocracy as well as income inequality and permanent war for American empire. You could also probably add in climate change, as both parties take huge funding from the fossil fuel industry. If you are someone from a foreign country or a Martian and you only observed American politics thru the corporate media, you would think that the only conflicts and division in America were the culture wars and PC. But any American living here who has woke up, not in the PC sense, but in the common sense meaning of losing their illusions, knows that the issues left unsaid are what's most wrong with America. The two major parties pretend to be very different and, as long as all the attention is on cultural issues and PC, they are different. But on the issues that matter most to me and most woke up Americans, they are a duopoly.

When I start looking again after Covid, I will again be seeking someone who enjoys their independence and is done being responsible for their children, but that will be a tall order here in the Midwest where almost all the women are so family and child-oriented.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 19, 2020:
Read it and saw the stage play based on it. The sad fact is that there are many rich people, as well as others in the top 10%, who arrogantly believe that they are entitled to exploit people who live their whole lives slaving away as members of the working poor. In my view, tho it would not exactly be equal justice, it might be more fair if those exploiters ended up facing the guillotine or imprisoned on an island for their cruel selfishness.

We won't get what we want until either the system collapses or there is the real threat of third party candidates getting elected prez and in congress with large enough numbers to challenge the major parties. Protests are easily ignored, which is why we still have permanent war in the Middle East.

It's not just Joe Biden, it's backward redneck states like Alabama which have always been cruel to drug users and blacks. That is why I will never take a driving trip to or thru the South. I hate rednecks and sadistic law enforcement. I bet if this veteran were white, they would have given him a pass...

In my state, with a Repub governor and legislature, it's damned if you do and damned if you don't. Go back to work and risk your health and life (as well as those you live with)- no matter how high risk the workplace or job- or lose your UE benefits.

Who's laughing now, asshole? I wish stories like this would get around to more young people in my area who refuse to wear masks. They think they are invincible if they are under 45 and also don't give a shit about infecting older people.

Typical Libertarian bullshit. All about individual rights and no caring about others or the common welfare, even during a pandemic. I can only hope some of them or those in their circle get seriously sick or die. Maybe then they might wake up to the idea of society and the welfare of others.

Suit yourself, pinhead...I love singing karaoke, but there's no way I'm going out to that until Covid is over. I can't imagine a more high risk environment, but two of my younger karaoke pals have started going to it again. They are in their 30s and 40s, so they feel safe with the risk.

Beats me. I am taking a break from the dating game until Covid is over. Maybe by then I'll have figured it out, but more likely I won't. I also fear that by then the dating sites will have made the process even more frustrating and useless by removing more of the allowed profile info than they have already.

Trump is the definition of fascism. As far as the Dems being Far Left, I can only wish...Biden sure as hell wouldn't know far left if it bit him in the ass... It also needs to be said that, in my opinion, the people who keep voting for corporate Dem candidates for prez are also just as much sheeple as those who support Trump. The reason is that they keep being lied to by corporate Dems who say that if elected they will help the economic fortunes of the working class and middle class, then after getting their votes they go back to promoting the neoliberal policies desired by their corporate donors. Rinse, repeat the cycle...
