Let's get real about online dating.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 23, 2020:
If the US had appropriate enforcement of antitrust laws, then dating sites would have to actually compete with each other and thus provide decent service to their customers. Instead, as the above post states, the industry has followed the same pattern as most American industries and ended up with little competition as conglomerates buy and swallow up all their competition. This could have been avoided, but no doubt congress sees dating sites as non-essential businesses, so competition or government regulation is not a priority. I also think that the dating sites have gotten worse in the last couple years and it's probably due to increased monopolization in the industry.
Had to take poor Mazie to the vet today.

"Dating for real people".
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 20, 2020:
Until Covid is over, my view is that the dating scene of singles meeting new people to date will be taking a pause among my age group and older. The only dating scene that will continue to go on will be at bars among young adults, because they are at relatively less risk from Covid and are the age group that right now is continuing to visit bars and restaurants, thus leading to the surge in Covid. Older people like me will continue to pretty much stay home and not mix socially in public. Intelligent people will not bother with dating sites to attempt to meet and date other singles during Covid, because it's obvious that few people, esp. my age or older, will be willing to take the risk of meeting someone from the site in person, when all they really know before that about the other person is that person's word about their infection status and self-protection habits around Covid. The dating sites are probably having to really cut their prices to get any suckers to sign up and pay. My guess is that younger adults who are only or mainly interested in using dating sites or bars to hook up will probably continue to keep doing what they were doing pre-Covid because they are willing to risk their health in the first place, whether it's STDs or Covid. People over 45, not so much...

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 20, 2020:
Most of the culture wars in America involve PC and I agree that most of the culture war issues do matter and are about important things that should be changed, but my main beef about PC is how it's used by both major parties and the corporate media to cynically distract the masses from even more important issues like class warfare, corporate rule of our government, and plutocracy as well as income inequality and permanent war for American empire. You could also probably add in climate change, as both parties take huge funding from the fossil fuel industry. If you are someone from a foreign country or a Martian and you only observed American politics thru the corporate media, you would think that the only conflicts and division in America were the culture wars and PC. But any American living here who has woke up, not in the PC sense, but in the common sense meaning of losing their illusions, knows that the issues left unsaid are what's most wrong with America. The two major parties pretend to be very different and, as long as all the attention is on cultural issues and PC, they are different. But on the issues that matter most to me and most woke up Americans, they are a duopoly.

After being widowed, I am glad to not be responsible for anyone else either, same as you. When I start looking again after Covid, I will again be seeking someone who enjoys their independence and is done being responsible for their children, but that will be a tall order here in the Midwest where almost all the women are so family and child-oriented.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 19, 2020:
Read it and saw the stage play based on it. The sad fact is that there are many rich people, as well as others in the top 10%, who arrogantly believe that they are entitled to exploit people who live their whole lives slaving away as members of the working poor. In my view, tho it would not exactly be equal justice, it might be more fair if those exploiters ended up facing the guillotine or imprisoned on an island for their cruel selfishness.

I have mixed feelings about the Civil War re-enactors. My late father was into one of those groups, altho he was too old to do the battle theater stuff. He was definitely as racist as most white guys of his time, but I don't feel he was attracted to the Civil War group out of racism as he was just as interested in WWII history. Nowadays with BLM I feel embarrassed to tell people he was part of a Civil War group.

Movements have been here for decades to reduce economic equality and get single payer healthcare, but Obama ignored them and Biden has already said he won't back them either. This guy is either dishonest or naive to believe that Biden won't just ignore or do lip service to the left if elected. We won't get what we want until either the system collapses or there is the real threat of third party candidates getting elected prez and in congress with large enough numbers to challenge the major parties. Protests are easily ignored, which is why we still have permanent war in the Middle East.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 30, 2020:
It's a good article and nothing I hadn't already figured out. Dating may still be an option during Covid for people younger than my age group because their risk is way less than mine, unless they have an underlying medical condition. For my age group, however, I think dating will be out of the question until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment because no one in their right mind is just going to trust someone they meet thru a dating site, no longer how much they message before meeting, that the other person is being completely truthful about their safety practices and infection status or risk, esp. women, who I already know from experience with online dating before the pandemic, are even less trusting than men about honesty from the opposite sex, not that they don't have reason. I am not going to bother fighting this distrust and impossible situation these days, if for no other reason than my age and heart condition make pandemic dating downright deadly a risk for me.

It really comes down to either being pro-social and wearing a mask or being selfish and arrogant so that your precious personal freedom is more important so you don't wear one. Conservatives are, by nature, selfish people, so they will only wear masks if they feel there is something in it for them, such as protecting their own loved ones or themselves. They do not believe in doing things for society's benefit. As Thatcher said, "There is no society"..
Supreme Court hands down major decision reaffirming abortion rights
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 29, 2020:
I've been saying forever that the SC will never actually overturn Roe v. Wade because they know that in doing so they would hand the Dems every election after that, at the fed level esp., so even tho they have had the votes on the court for many years to overturn it, they won't. They know it would turn so many women into single issue voters against the Repubs that they would be finished as a party. So instead the Repubs will restrict abortion rights as much as possible at the state level while allowing it to remain legal.
What’s your geographic range for dating?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 28, 2020:
55 miles at most. I am not a young pup anymore and don't want to put in the time and energy to drive all the time while building the relationship for months. Even then, someone would have to move after a year or so or else the relationship would probably end. Just being realistic. Since I don't have kids or family around where I live and almost all the women in my age group do, I prefer not to have to do all that driving and time to pursue a long distance relationship that might or might not become permanent, knowing that most likely I will be the one who has to move away from my friends (who are my family these days), not the woman...

BLM is becoming popular lately with the same kind of comfortable white suburban liberals that were against the Vietnam War and for racial equality back in the 60s, but now, just as then, those same whites will quickly betray the BLM movement and vote Republican if BLM becomes part of an alliance with socialists. I remember bitterly how this played out in the late 60s as those suburban whites voted for Nixon instead of McGovern in 1968 when progressives last had a candidate on the ballot as a Dem for prez.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 20, 2020:
Using the words Racial Reconciliation is misleading and unconstructive because it both implies that there is equal power between minority racial groups and white people while also denying that racism is founded by and maintained by a system of white supremacy, and capitalism, for that matter. It's better to be blunt and call racism what it is, a system of white supremacy that divides the lower classes against each other and rewards lower class members of white society for supporting it and allying themselves against minority group members and instead siding with the police in exchange for enjoying white privilege that protects them from the police and also advantages them with employers, banks, and other institutions that dispense rewards and benefits.

I got to see a local semi-pro production of Jerry Springer, The Opera about ten years ago in Des Moines. It was so sick and funny. And yes, Diaper Man was the most memorable character.. More outrageous than the TV show, if that's possible...

Conservative propaganda to scare the base and make sure they vote Repub in Nov.. These protests and any reform they might force in policing will not cost the rich or corporate America anything in the way of money or power, but they will probably succeed in fooling the masses into thinking we still have a functioning and responsive democracy when it comes to protest. What would really make the ruling class sweat would be a repeat of the Occupy movement that started in the spring and went all the way to winter with tens of millions out there on the streets. That would truly look like revolution against the 1%.

I'm sure they are. I've heard that even before Covid the sites would send fake likes to people and with the sheltering and fear of infection nowadays I'm sure the sites are desperate for paying customers now.
How many of you think Biden would have vetoed this biill,? [forbes.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
He would veto it, Bernie wouldn't. Need to remember Biden told his rich donors way back when he announced his run that nothing would fundamentally change under him. Biden also would veto single payer/Medicare For All if by some miracle it passed. Biden will not support anything that offends the rich or corporate America. It's a moot point as I think he would lose to Trump and that he will be replaced anyway in August with the convention as the nominee. It happened in 1968 after Johnson dropped out and Humphrey was chosen to replace him as the nominee even tho Humphrey had not run in the primaries or won any delegates, so it can be done and the rules allow it. Things continue to look more and more like that year in other ways as well.
I had a really good conversation with a co worker this week.

My massage therapist is a very strong Repub, so we can't discuss politics or these protests. I haven't seen her since March and I don't know when or if I will again be a client of hers again. She was able to begin giving massages again last month when the state closure was lifted, but before my appt. came up she found out she was pregnant. My guess is she will not practice massage again until at least after the birth. Who knows also if she will go back to massage again after she has the baby? I will probably call her later this month to see where her head is at and if she is not planning to do massages anytime soon, I will ask her for referrals at least for the time being until she is back to work again.
So this post is partially Hello from Florida and partially please tell me I’m sexy...

I'm ten years older than you, therefore out of your age range, making my opinion irrelevant. But for what it's worth, you are an attractive-looking woman.

Sanders to supporters: Refusing to back Biden is "irresponsible" - Axios
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
As far as I'm concerned, Bernie betrayed his supporters, at least this time if not last time, and ought to refund their campaign contributions as he once again caved to the party without fighting to get his policies included in the Dem platform and promised to be promoted by Biden. Bernie no longer has any credibility to me as he clearly cares more about having some status in the Senate than actually getting any power for progressives in the Dem party or in DC. Glad I didn't give him any money or volunteer this time as it would have been too heartbreaking.
So . . . after all this has mellowed out, and we have new leadership?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
Not likely. Obama has the chance to have Bush and Cheney prosecuted for war crimes and instead passed that up by saying "we have to move forward". One of many reasons I hated Obama.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
I am sure that naming of the street is really getting under Trump's skin. Hopefully it lasts long after Trump is gone and, like Nixon, his party has conveniently erased him from their history.
[youtu.be] I thought this was an interesting video.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
I am skeptical regarding the current protests as to how much of the rioting is by actual black protestors and how much may actually be done by undercover cops, if for no other reason than the fact that was commonly done by police departments in the 60s and 70s.
I really like this gal.

Biden formally clenches the democratic nomination. [apnews.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
Don't get used to it. He will drop out in August for a "personal health emergency" (dementia) and will be replaced by the DNC at convention time with probably Cuomo or Warren.
