@prometheus Yup, there need to be real penalties to breaking the rules or there is no point in even attempting more debates. I figured the mic cutoff would be simpler, more fair, and allow the opponent to maintain their concentration and train of thought, since the whole point should be having a coherent discussion that informs the audience in making their decision. Trump obviously wants none of that.

TomMcGiverin replies on Sep 28, 2020:
Sounds like this is the DNC surprise that they hope will swing the election for Biden, but I think his debate performances will have the opposite effect when they see how demented Biden is. People will be scared to vote for him if he comes off as confused and feeble as I expect him to. The other thing is that, if anything, this tax scandal will swing some voters in Trump's favor as many Americans admire tax dodging. Reminds me of how one boss I worked for who seemed like a Repub on everything else said during Clinton's impeachment that he supported Clinton then because he admired a man his age being able to cheat on his wife and get oral sex from a young woman. You can never underestimate the perverse nature of some people's political compass. Not surprisingly, I hated that boss and he bullied me at every opportunity. Felt a lot of glee years later when I heard he died of a heart attack, seeing that he was also a fat slob for many years. I also learned years before his death that his parents had turned their back on him after his mistreating them as well over the years. In this case, the wicked got what they deserved.

TomMcGiverin replies on Sep 24, 2020:
The difference is this. I'm 62 and have a heart condition. I had the flu twice last winter, even after getting a flu shot. It only lasted a few to several days each time. I did not have to go to a hospital. If I get Covid, not only would I get seriously ill, I might die. I have never had to worry about that with seasonal flu, which I've had several times since I reached middle age. I deserve the chance to live another 15-20 years so I can enjoy a retirement. That may not happen if I get Covid. I should not have to order my groceries online or pick them up in the parking lot because young people won't wear masks in grocery stores because they think only of themselves. For anybody over 50, this is way worse and more dangerous than the flu, so that's why it deserves more precautions for the good of older adults. Don't be surprised if there is some payback for this against young adults by older adults who are in state legislatures. I know there will be in Iowa, as a former legislator once told me that her colleagues would often say things like how they would not hold down college tuition rates because " the students always seem to have money for beer". How forgiving do you think they will be towards the college kids and young adults having Covid parties, packing the bars and restaurants and not wearing masks in stores unless the store requires it?

I have no desire to wrap myself in the flag nor yell empty "patriotic" bullshit..guess I don't fit this article's description.
TomMcGiverin replies on Sep 21, 2020:
The vast majority of Americans are too ignorant or dense to understand the difference between nationalism and patriotism, so they are easily suckered and manipulated by slogans and symbols of nationalism posing as patriotism. Real patriotism is being willing to sacrifice for the common good, which means paying your fair share of taxes, sacrificing when there are real hardships for the country to overcome, such as a Depression or actual war where the US is attacked and in real danger of invasion, etc. It's not just about worshiping the flag and being willing to kill for your country or serve in the military. If the latter were the case, the Repubs and most Dems would be conspicuously absent for showing any true patriotism since neither party's pols these days have usually ever served. It also means things like wearing a damn mask during a pandemic because it has science backing it as effective in saving lives instead of being a selfish asshole that cares more about your individual rights and freedom. Real patriotism is also standing up to fascism and calling it by its real name. Neither major party is willing to do that and the corporate media won't do it either. In other words, true patriotism would have more in common with socialist values than just empty platitudes about freedom and liberty, with both masquarading as covers for selfishness and individualism run amok.

If Trump gets re-elected, I can easily see him encouraging a civil war in which right wing militias openly attack lefty protesters in the streets and the police and military either stand idly by and let it happen or even join in with the militias in attacking the protesters without any provocation. Wait, isn't that mostly what's already happening?? If Covid becomes enough of a manageable risk for me to get out there with the protests, I sure as hell plan to bring some kind of defensive protection in the way of a gas mask and a shield. This is not like the 60s when non-violent protesters could usually expect to not get gassed or beaten or shot at with rubber bullets or pepperballs even if they stayed peaceful and esp. if they were white. Nowadays those customs are not observed anymore by cops and national guard. We now have open fascism and authoritarian leadership. Something like Chile is not unthinkable happening here.

Lucky I didn't meet my late wife until I'd had some therapy, got older and stronger, and realized I was not as vulnerable or emotionally weak as I thought. @JeffMurray That is what I am saying. @itsmedammit There's no explaining to it. You don't agree and I really don't care about whether you do. I resent you continuing to say things to the effect that I am dense or unintelligent because I don't agree with you. I am quite intelligent and I get your point. I think that you are either lying, in denial, or a very rare bird in your viewpoint on looks. It's really that simple. Almost no one on a paid dating site uses a profile that does not contain at least one photo of themselves. There's a reason for that and it proves my point, whether you agree or admit to it or not.....

@itsmedammit I didn't miss your point at all. I just think that when it comes to something like online dating, which is much like job-seeking, almost all people proceed in a logical, methodical manner which includes screening, sorting, interviewing thru messaging followed by phone calls or in-person meetings, etc. Whether you personally agree with me or not, whether you personally follow this type of approach or not, I have no doubt about whether most people do. And looks are a big part of it. But I know enough about human nature and pride to know that many people will not admit to being as concerned with looks as they are. Same phenomena as how wrong polls were about the last prez election. Trump's support was way underestimated to due 'Trump shame" where many people who supported him wouldn't admit it, even to strangers polling them, because it would make them look bad in their own eyes. Admitting supposed shallowness or superficiality about looks is no different. It can be very hard to get most people to admit their embarrassing faults. That's why researchers use ways to get around this. Like when they ask ?s about parenting styles as a way to find out who is more supportive of authoritarian leaders, since there is stigma about authoritarian leaders being like Hitler. So the parenting ?s get a more accurate picture of who supports Trump, for example.

TomMcGiverin replies on Sep 17, 2020:
Most of the time people are rejected on dating sites, it is mostly about looks, if for no other reason than simplicity and convenience. How can anyone honestly say that most people using dating sites don't initially screen who they will message with sincere interest in them, where it's not based on at least looks and maybe a couple other criteria like religion or political affiliation? It's clear that most people begin screening out or whittling down their field of candidates with criteria like those and then work their way forward with reading their whole profile info and then choosing who to message based on other things like common interests, kids, relationship history, etc. I would imagine this is even more true for women than men because they generally get way more interest from others on dating sites, even if it's from scammers, than do most men. That's because most men on dating sites use a scattershot method of approaching many more women than the other gender and hoping to get responses from at least some of them. In my experience, as an average-looking man, I seldom got messages from women who were not scammers, who would make the first approach. And when they did, they were always below-average looking. I suspect if you are above average looking, male or female, you will get tons of interest on a dating site, and not just from scammers. Those are the facts of life.

I think almost all of us want photos, and current photos, before we decide if someone is worth engaging with or meeting. Just talk to anyone who's been set up many times by well-meaning friends, esp. of the opposite gender, who are not in touch with how looks matter to their friend or how the prospective suitor stacks up in the looks dept. against the other party they are trying to set up. Knowing about the looks of someone in advance of meeting them saves a lot of regret and embarrassment. BTW, I agree with you that the vast majority of those we meet, whether organically or thru dating sites, do not end up with mutual attraction, maybe not 90%, but probably close to that because attraction is both looks and overall compatibility as well as personality.

@Marcie1974 Thank you for your honest response. I am not at all surprised that this meeting happened organically thru a mutual friend rather than a dating site, because, in my experience, this guy probably wouldn't have been interested in you if he had encountered you on a dating site. Actually, I think most people of either gender will meet people organically they would not consider or be interested if the introduction had been an online dating site. Why? Because, it appears, you are being realistic and open-minded about attraction and giving someone a chance if the instant chemistry isn't there and he is not. In fact, based on your description of him, I would probably rate him as a 5 and he is trying to date only women that are a 7 or better. My guess is he gets even more rejection than you, but probably doesn't admit it. Sounds like he's in about the same looks category as me, but I'm maybe a bit more realistic and honest. I actually had a dating coach look over my online dating history to get her opinion on if I was trying to date out of my league regarding looks and she said I "appeared to be doing that some of the time, but not most of the time" on Match, and "not enough to make me concerned about it being a problem for you". Altho, I fired her a couple weeks after that and don't feel she was really that helpful at all for me.

If you have to work to survive or live comfortably, you are not part of the elite.

It's obvious that if fed level elections were not so dominated by big money, then we would have much higher voting rates for those elections.

I only go to the store once a week and always by myself, masked, and I almost always get cussed out by someone because I'm usually the only one in the store apart from the employees that's wearing a mask. Our town voted down mask mandates twice and ...

It's a pity that Darwinian thinning of the herd isn't taking care of the stupidity in your town.

I was around for the 60s and 70s, when this happened all the time. The Church hearings in congress brought all this out, including the COINTELLPRO operations the feds were pulling back in those decades to discredit civil rights groups, the anti-war movement, and the Black Panthers.
