I guess this is just a rant.

All that kind of talk sort of validates my longtime cynicism that many women in the dating game put a man's money way ahead of his heart and character....
So how many of you guys think this is “fair”?
TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 1, 2019:
I always make it clear, beginning with the first meeting for coffee, that I will gladly pay for their coffee if that's ok with them. After that, I make it clear that I expect we will each pay our own way on things as we are getting to know each other. If a woman objects to the latter, I have my answer that they are expecting me to pay for their company and/or sex later on and I will move on to finding someone that wants a relationship of equals. I will not get caught up in usual patriarchy BS or a situation of being a Sugar Daddy. If someone doesn't want to be with me "for fun and for free", they should be with someone else....

I am curious about your day. Did you have any family mishaps or faux pas?
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 28, 2019:
My day went very well. I was invited to Thanksgiving dinner with some relatives of my girlfriend and I really enjoyed meeting and getting to know them some. A refreshing change from my family in that they all seemed to really enjoy and like each other. No detectable tension. It spared me a three hour drive to my older sister's home in Kansas City. I had been invited there, but ended up scrapping that plan yesterday due to the predicted weather today, which turned out to be ok for travel. However the weather for Fri. is going to be bad, so coming home then would have been a pain. All for the better, as things turned out, by staying local for the holiday. PS- Even tho I'm sure everyone there but me was Catholic, religion never came up (same with politics) except for some passing references to an old church that was part of the holiday memories of most of the group. They also did a prayer before we ate, which I think is a long tradition of their family, and I just silently bowed my head with them. I should also state for the record that my older sister and her hubby are fundy Christians who voted for Trump, so there's that too....

I really don't think the root cause is religion as much as greed, extreme individualism, tribalism, fear of differences in others and, most importantly, governments run by the rich, corporations, and corrupt politicians. TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 15, 2019:
Better that she told you early on than later. Personally, I would not continue seeing someone who was so casual about sex that she was already having a continued FWB while also meeting and dating other men, but I'm sure some other men wouldn't really mind or let that hold them back from continuing to see her if she was attractive to them and they were as casual about sex as she is. Obviously tho, in either case, one would want to proceed cautiously with her about sex and use protection.

Generally good advice, as you can only control your own self improvement, not others. On the other hand, dating is a competitive process, at least online dating is, and you are competing against the rest of the field that have things in common with you that are compatible with any particular person or are what that person is seeking in a partner.
I have kinda given up on online dating for the time being.
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 14, 2019:
I can relate. Music is huge to me and I could never date someone who was much of a country music fan, as I hate that genre and the whole culture that goes with it. Same with smoking and someone who is very religious. I am currently dating someone who is a practicing Catholic, but she is not big on it or pushy about it. She also likes country music, but it is not one of her favorites. She is a non-smoker like me, so it's been working so far. The biggest point of conflict tends to be if we discuss politics, because I am a Bernie Sanders socialist and she is a moderate Dem who supports Biden.

TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 13, 2019:
The Dems in the House would be smarter to end the impeachment hearings by voting for censure, instead of impeachment, and inviting the Repubs to join them. That would help the Dems more in the next election than wasting time on a symbolic impeachment attempt that everyone knows will not remove him from office. Most voters do not care about the impeachment issues vs. the far more important issues of the economy, health care, college costs, endless war, etc..

TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 12, 2019:
Well, I'm a born pessimist to begin with, but I am becoming resigned to the idea that the Dems will nominate a non-inspiring centrist like Biden, Mayor Pete, or Harris, who will then lose to Trump. In fact, I even think that Warren would lose to Trump, so I am not optimistic, unless Warren ending up getting the votes of not only Bernie's supporters, but also the votes of all the usual non-voters that Bernie has inspired. But I don't see that happening because she does not inspire the same poor non-voters that Bernie does.

No surprise here. I wish that critical thinking skills were taught in our schools below the college level, but they aren't and will probably never be. Failing that, it's too bad that people are allowed to vote without demonstrating those skills, but you can't have everything. We are stuck with the decisions of these gullible people as part of our democracy. Helps me understand why some socialists and the communists did not want to have democracy once they achieved power, because they did not want to lose it later due to gullible people falling for capitalist propaganda.

TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 12, 2019:
They are open to non-believers. They vary greatly, just like Christian churches, in the culture of their individual congregations, including church politics, snobbery or how welcoming they are to newcomers, the level of classism practiced by most church members, etc. All the usual human failings.... All you can do is check out that church and see what you think. I have been a member of two Unitarian churches in my area. One was very welcoming, not that classist, and very supportive of my late wife and me. The other one was very classist, snobby and not very inclusive for most of the time I spent there. Both were very accepting of non-believers and most of their congregations were non-believers.

I have been asked, "How long have you been on the dating site?" The implication of the ? seems to be that the longer you have been on there and are still looking for a partner, the less desirable you must be to the opposite sex or else the less functional or realistic you are about what you want in someone and how to relate to the opposite sex. To be fair, I sometimes have asked the ? myself, but when I do I make none of these assumptions about the person, no matter what their answer is, because my real motivation in asking the ? is to get an idea how much of the frustration or lack of with online dating they have been thru and whether it is comparable to mine or not.

Sounds like you are describing the suburb where I live. I have found what works for me is to seek my whole social life in the nearby relatively large city, Des Moines, that is much more diverse and less conservative and religious. It involves a lot of driving, but it's worth it. The condo community I live in has lots of rules, but it really doesn't affect me because I don't socialize with them or spend any real amount of time here outside my condo apt.. Meetup groups, even in the Des Moines area, have been a waste of time for me in almost every case, as they seem to cater to and attract pretty much people who are much younger than me. My local senior center is also useless for socializing. Everyone there but me is pretty much way older and also not very educated or interesting. They are all also very conformist and pretty religious. I just go there to eat free lunches by myself and be left alone.

TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 2, 2019:
They are very impersonal and most of them do not allow you to put enough info into your profile for people to learn enough about you for matching. Thus, with most dating sites it comes down to people selecting others to contact mostly based on the attractiveness of their profile photos. In other words, as bobwjr once said, "It's mainly a beauty contest." I have met some nice women in the two years I've used dating sites, but only one so far that was mutually compatible enough to see more than a couple times and actually date. Pretty poor results overall for over two years of looking. But it's been worth it since I did meet one woman that was compatible and I was never wanting anything poly, so there............

Opinion: Why millennials are skipping church and not going back

After reading the article, and looking at my own experience, I would say that most of these millennials are going to be in for a long life of loneliness without much in the way of community or social support systems after they leave church behind. Unfortunately, for most Americans who don't do church, it takes some effort and doing to come up with other sources of community and social support that most of us used to get thru churches, community organizations, unions, political organizations, and community groups. Has anyone actually paid for Match.com or is it the load of garbage I think it is?
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 29, 2019:
I live in a metro area of a few hundred thousand. For almost two years, Match was pretty much a waste of time for me. I met a new woman on average about every two to three months. For some reason that changed late this summer and suddenly I started getting a lot more interest from women who were not only compatible on paper, but also physically attractive to me as well. Before then I would only meet women who were compatible on paper, but usually without any physical attraction on my part. To be bluntly honest, I think what swung things was the ending of summer, much larger enrollment on the site for my local area and age range, and with that, suddenly there were way more women that were compatible on interests, background, personality but also more average looking women than before that had those compatible traits. In a nutshell, I was no longer having to choose pretty much between women who were not attractive to me or were else above average-looking and out of my league on looks. It's a funny, puzzling numbers game that online dating is. I am currently dating a woman steadily from Match that I really am enjoying for the month so far that we've been dating. My subscriptions to Match and Our Time are both paid, because without that all you can do on either site really is browse, which, to me, is useless if you really want to meet people.
Sorry no trivia tonight -went out to breakfast with 15 of Kathleeen's Sunday group.

I can't stand to watch MSNBC these days. All of the coverage is about impeachment and Russiagate, nothing about Bernie or the domestic problems of the country. We all know it's just a distraction by the corporate media to focus away from the real problems here.
No space for Mommy on the couch. But that's ok cause Mommy sits on the chair.

Can't fault her for being honest....Along the line of that country song that says, I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim Is Getting Better......... I stand corrected on the title and edited my comment.
Let's END PERSONHOOD for corporations and get money out of politics.

Another way to approach this is to restore the Fairness Doctrine for the media and also make public financing of political campaigns a viable way for third party and independent candidates to afford getting on TV for their campaigns. That way they could beat the corrupt major party candidates with their ideas, once they were able to get name recognition and their ideas out thru TV ads.
Let's END PERSONHOOD for corporations and get money out of politics.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 27, 2019:
It's a nice thought, but the only way big money will get taken out of politics is if a majority of the voters were willing to start voting for a third party that backed this, along with a credible threat of voters dumping all the incumbents from both corrupt major parties. Then, and only then, would the major party pols get behind this kind of reform, purely out of selfish survival.

Doesn't surprise me at all that Match put profit ahead of protecting the non-paying members from scammers. They really don't care about people finding matches or love, just about making money. But all the commercial sites are that way and they really have no competition since a few conglomerates own all the sites nowadays.I'm amazed the FTC is even policing them.
Everything That’s Wrong With Elizabeth Warren - YouTube
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 25, 2019:
None of this surprises me. She is a replay of Obama 2008, vague and slippery, saying just the right things to publicly court liberals and progressives, while behind the scenes selling them out. Then, once in office, governing like a Repub on all the issues and policies that really matter, like climate, war, the economy, and foreign policy. Except, unlike Obama, the only identity political card she can play against her critics is misogyny, while Obummer could label all his critics from the left as racist, even tho he knew damn well that was a lie. The racist card was more effective and powerful in stifling and discrediting lefties for Obama, while misogyny will be a harder sell for Warren when used against critics who have always been on the side of women regarding reproductive rights, equal pay, and gender discrimination. She will have a harder time smearing them than Obummer did.
This rings true

It was ok for a while after my wife was separated from me with her dementia getting really bad, but it was not that long before I remembered how lonely it was for me before I met her and how much we used to enjoy being together before she got dementia. Since then, now that I have actually had some real dates lately, I really enjoy being with someone to experience them together and have a companion. Everyone is wired differently, I guess.
Just when I think I have heard it all, a co-worker at lunch told us about a coupon she found for ...

Yes, I would, but only on the condition that we both undergo it in the same session. Anything else is unfair. I would not ask this of my SO. I think it is a bad idea and suggests an unusual lack of trust, but then again, some people have been burned so bad they might need this in order to trust enough to live with someone. I like to think I am a good enough judge of character that I would not need this. My late wife and I dated for a whole year before living together and that was a pretty good test. It's hard to maintain secrets and an act for a while year.
