They bring that up in the article, briefly, and they're not sure how much of that goes on before the surgery. They said the tumor can cause the brain to not function correctly, as far as re-mapping goes. But I'm sure a certain amount of it does happen. We just don't know how much.

I remember Mosaic. I worked in the computer industry (starting with hardware and moving on to software) starting in 1982. I see you're in Champaign. I have family out there, and used to go there to visit at least once a year. My sister graduated from the U of I. I spent a summer out there hanging out at a coffee house.
