Wow. Great question. Tough one too. Wish for more wishes? No, nevermind... different hypothetical. Head spinning. Too many options. Too many mistakes. @Renickulous (replying to his abortion challenge down thread - don't want this buried in comment replies). That's like saying you not lobbying for mothers and doctors to be prosecuted for murder destroys your argument... or does it? You feel it is the "murder" of a human being, and yet your own actions seem to fall short of that. Why so? Are there other murders you so casually condone? Why or why not? This seems to do a fairly good job framing the issue. "Abortion is the focus of some of the most intense social, cultural, political, religious, and ethical debates in modern American society. Some regard abortion as something people should be able to choose while others say abortion is a great evil which is destroying the moral fabric of society. Many of the debates turn on the status of the fetus: Is a fetus a person? Does a fetus have moral or legal rights? How we define a person and the fetus may decide the abortion debates." https://www.thoughtco.com/when-fetus-become-person-with-rights-248026

"We should do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognizing this nonsense of earning a living. We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because, according to Malthusian Darwinian theory he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors. The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living." ~ R. Is there a bulletin board in any of the common areas? Post an invite or share these thoughts. Also as another commenter pointed out, talk to the owners/managers for some sort of reimbursement. If it started to bug me too much in that situation, I'd buy me a set of those slip-on traction treads for shoes and boots I've been seeing in online ads, and laugh my ass off when the owners got sued because someone slipped. That sounds heartless I know, but you've described a situation where no one else seems to care about others, so it's not unreasonable for you to look out for yourself above all else. I'd bet if you ceased your charitable act, someone would eventually ask you about it. That would be a great time to vent, no?

J. Geils Band - I Do I once got to stand on the stage for the last half of the show with Peter Wolf video recording because a drummer friend (friend of a friend more accurately) was playing as part of his house band. He gave me his video camera to record the moment for him. I was at the front of the stage and Peter Wolf kept coming over to mug for the camera. I was loving it. He then reached down and pulled me out of the audience and onto the stage like that one Bruce Springsteen video. I spent the rest of the show next to the drum kit moving around enough to try to capture all the guys in the house band. Problem was, my drummer friend had not charged his battery fully. Towards the end, I could get a minute or two, then it'd die. I'd wait and try again for a few more seconds over and over, till it died completely. I just stayed there pretending it worked. It was so awesome to see the best part of the show from behind the singer looking out on the audience in a tiny club in Redondo Beach (The Strand?). I never got to see the footage. The band watched it with Peter and then he asked that it be erased because the quality was so poor and he didn't want it ever making it out there. I was heartbroken about that part, though I was pretty sure my camera work itself was good. All in all, it was one of the memories of a lifetime. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w5h0A1u-XsE

She explained in detail on one of my posts making a similar inquiry, that by and large, anything goes as she created so many niche categories. Her catch-all is "cool tracks" but we've kind of established that anything with an ocean or sailing theme is essentially Tiki by default. Additionally, phenomenal live versions like this takes it fully out of any category that might be otherwise considered too "mainstream" or mundane regardless of how well the artist/group is known. Carole posted a vid of a whale lost in a SoCal marina, but later deleted it because she said it was getting sad votes. I was going to post the haunting studio verson of Crosby and Nash's To the Last Whale. If there's no objection, I'll do so here (meaning let me know if you'd prefer it deleted). So much awesome content here that it should not be a requirement that all music must be necessarily "upbeat" by default. There is such a wide range of emotionally stirring music. Beautiful Cajun music in the 1981 film Southern Comfort Parlez-nous à boire - Balfa brothers & Marc Savoy - the first song Eunice Two Step is the second. Searched quite a long time for that title until I checked out the comments for the YouTube link. I started doing searches of Cajun music as I was totally blown away by just how kickass these versions were in the film. Surprisingly, I was hard pressed to find any that captured the energy of the film's versions. Also, was concerned a bit sharing the film links as the animal butchering scenes (and of course, the violence depicted against humans) can be rather intense... and I love pork products and BBQ (and people... for the most part). The sensitive might just listen rather than watch. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L2NIZexqb4U

Did you know the kilts in Braveheart were an anachronism? Those didn't come about till much later. Also interesting to me was that the purpose of a military tattoo was to call the troops back to the fort from their drinking excursions into the surrounding regions. "Be aware of this truth that the people on this earth could be joyous, if only they would live rationally and if they would contribute mutually to each others' welfare. This world is not a vale of sorrows if you will recognize discriminatingly what is truly excellent in it; and if you will avail yourself of it for mutual happiness and well-being. Therefore, let us explain as often as possible, and particularly at the departure of life, that we base our faith on firm foundations, on Truth for putting into action our ideas which do not depend on fables and ideas which Science has long ago proven to be false.” ― Kurt Vonnegut, Palm Sunday: An Autobiographical Collage Kurt is quoting his great grandfather Clemens Vonnegut.

Obviously there's elements of any truism that don't hold up under deconstruction. But I think the absolutely amazing aspects of existence itself, and the planet and universe we inhabit, routinely become less so just because we get used to it. The "no one is happy" part and my commentary has to do with the many things our species and our respective societies do that create conditions were the prosperity of a particular group is at the expense of others. There's a hardened characteristic of much of humanity that as long as the bad things are happening to someone else, it's not all that much of an issue. Seems we should be smart enough to devise more all encompassing win-win scenarios.
Undeniably true imho.

WilliamCharles comments on Feb 25, 2019:
I think Vonnegut is just putting forth the notion in his own playful way that meaning and purpose is not delivered from on high by non-existent supernatural beings anyway. It mirrors Alan Watts a bit when Watts said he considers the Gospels "inspired" (or other "sacred" texts), but not in the sense of taking dictation from the almighty, but rather human beings attempting to craft something they felt allowed them to make sense of the world around them. So many of these texts are just a retelling of previous myths culturally updated to an extent. There's tidbits of wisdom here and there, but there's problems in the in insistence on literalism as well as the claims of a divine source. It's a bit ironic that the so-called sacred texts are of part of the process of human beings trying to figure it out for themselves, even when done in a way wholly counterproductive. Remarkably enough, sometimes their flights of fancy touch on the truth. If I recall correctly, the Hindu view of the process of creation and existence somewhat matches what cosmologists have theorized in their concept of the oscillating universe.

I was following the cruiser, and right in front of us a driver came from the far left lane to cross over to the right turn only lane he was about to miss. He even crossed the solid double white to do it. The cop was already in the right turn only lane about 6 car lengths back. If it were you or me, that's exactly when you'd have seen those lights flip on. He didn't down the street either. It was either a miracle, or some sort of bizarro world parallel universe bled over into ours in that instant. Could there be any other possible explanation? Their municipal coffers full? Late for break time? Cloak of invisibility? [discuss]

"The other day I wrote a short piece on why the Bible does not command us to blindly stand with the modern state of Israel, and one of the points I made is that Israel is guilty of genocide. There were no shortage of internet commenters who objected to my use of this word and felt it was over the top. However, I stand by my assertion that Israel is guilty of genocide, so allow me to expand upon that."

I like Watts's take on pretty much everything. He has you view things from various angles. One of my favorite observations of his is when he said, "I feel the bible is inspired, but not in the sense of someone taking dictation from a supernatural entity, but by human beings trying to make sense of the world around them." It's much like the maxim about art that says. "Art is a reflection of the times in which it is produced." I think religionism follows the same pattern, even with regards to the claims of divine inspiration or miracles. Today you hear people talking about finding a parking spot in a crowded lot as "miraculous." Newscasters report people claiming miracles. Plane crashes, everyone lives... miracle. Most die, some live... miracle. Some die, most live... miracle. All die... God's will (though these same newscasters would never suggest *that* option)
