What Does It Mean to Be Agnostic?
anglophone comments on Jul 3, 2021:
I find the poll to be oversimplistic.
anglophone replies on Jul 3, 2021:
@AnonySchmoose Given the context provided by the poll, I feel unable to provide a succinct alternative (but that could just be a function of my currently malfunctioning brain). An alternative could be "Other, please elucidate", but that would amount to a cop out in my opinion. I love your reply to my comment, though. :)

@skado I can relate to the meaning of the word "spirit" in the manner that you describe, the nearest equivalent that I can think of at the moment being "atmosphere". People can have intention, but the universe as a whole cannot.

My post comes from having started to learn mathematics at university, and following the field ever since. Gödel's incompleteness theorems fascinate me, and having seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeQX2HjkcNo it has given me a slightly better understanding of how there are unproveable theorems, how Hilbert's dream of having a machine that could prove everything that was true in mathematics was dashed, and where the Halting Problem ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undecidable_problem ) comes into all this.

Isn't this addressed in Game Theory and Optimization Theory? Or am I misunderstanding your question?
anglophone replies on Jun 26, 2021:
It may well be addressed by Game Theory. In terms of optimisation theory, having worked for 18 years in optimisation, I do not see any connection with the question that I tried to pose. It could well be that my question is poorly phrased or ill thought out (or both). I will dig into Game Theory, and I thank you for that idea. I think @Fernapple's observation is also worthwhile looking at.
What benefits might there be in describing the activity of mathematics in the following terms?
Fernapple comments on Jun 26, 2021:
I thought that that was the standard way.
anglophone replies on Jun 26, 2021:
I started learning mathematics at university, and the students were all told about some axioms (the Axiom of Choice came later) and "all the rules of inference". Whether or not it is standard is something that is beyond me. My thinking was guided by the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, which is geometry from which the parallel postulate is excluded. The same approach makes me wonder what would happen if one or more of the currently accepted axioms, or one or more of the currently accepted rules of inference, were similarly excluded. Yes, my thinking might at first glance seem outrageous, but I think it is worthwhile at least asking the question.

Lauren comments on Jun 1, 2021:
I don't believe there's any rational reason to have delayed prosecuting priests save the church's ability to protect them, so it's hard for me to consider this progress in a positive light.
