Too many atheists are hostile to the religious.
anglophone comments on May 24, 2020:
I disagree. As an atheist I am supportive the religious under some conditions. I am also hostile under other conditions. I make a sharp distinction between those who seek to understand and improve their own lives, and those who try to ram their own opinions down my throat. The latter group traumatised me, and I see no good reason why they should be allowed to traumatise other people.
What is the relationship between culture and religion?

Evangelical Christianity was already sociopathic at the time of the Spanish Inquisitions. The United States of America has taken on the mantle of Isabella and Ferdinand 500 years afterwards.
Is it still a lie if you don't know it isn't true?
anglophone comments on May 18, 2020:
Different people can have different truths. From the point of view of a committed theist, if I was to tell him that his particular god cannot exist, then he is perfectly entitled to call me mistaken as to fact, but he is *not* entitled to call me a liar.

Do you think that religion has played overall good or bad role for human during this Covid pandemic?
anglophone comments on May 16, 2020:
The simple answer to your question is "no in my opinion". A longer answer goes like this: "Religion is merely a system of belief. It is religious people that do good and bad things. Those who claim that Covid-19 is an Act of God are doing a bad thing. Believers can also do good things: the good of humanitarianism has nothing to do with the evils of theism.".

Imho, God in this context is the God of the Bible. To assert that we have given him a series of new names such as Nature, Humanity, Reason etc is to make a nonsense of the English language.and to abandon rationality. Rant on sexism.
anglophone comments on May 5, 2020:
Sex sells, and it's not just women's bodies used in that. The Chippendales https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chippendales were once used to sell a certain brand of beer. I would suggest that the advertising industry has just as much of a part to play in the objectification of women's bodies as the wolf whistles from those with builders' cleavage. Those of us who treat women as people first tend not to make a noise about it. As with any person, I am of course aware of their apparent gender (they could be trans for all I know or care), their apparent age, their apparent health, and such parts of their personality (in the widest possible meaning of that word) as they care to make known to me. Your edit has set me off in another direction. Nobody has any business making remarks about somebody's body or apparel (or lack thereof) unless it is made clear from context that said person is happy to receive such remarks.

Atheistic Chaplain-is their denial an example of religious discrimination? [navytimes.com]
anglophone comments on May 3, 2020:
It is not religious discrimination. It is discrimination. It is a way of sidelining naval personnel who do not subscribe to religious bullshit. It is a form of apartheid, social apartheid. To "honour" such discrimination with the word "religious" is to mask the efforts of the God Mob to impose their vile views on everybody else.
Think back to when you were religious.

Revisiting a little theoretical physics: what does the double slit experiment tell us?

What are the most effective ways adults are recruited to religion and how do we stop them?
anglophone comments on May 3, 2020:
Adults are recruited into religion by means of indoctrination from babyhood. It would take an extremely brave legislature to forbid parents from indoctrinating their own children into the religion and sect chosen by said parents.
For those of you who believed in life after death before: do you struggle more now when people die?
anglophone comments on May 2, 2020:
As a child, I was worried and frightened by death, and I believed what I was told about the Christian afterlife. As an atheist of mature years, I now mourn my loss of those who have died ("Send not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee."), but I now also accept the finality of death. It seems that some people need the crutch of the promise of an afterlife, but other people do not. To answer your final question, my answer is "no".

anglophone comments on May 1, 2020:
Okay, I cannot resists a challenge like that, so here goes (and puts on a tin helmet to avoid all the bricks that will be thrown at my head) ... The capitalisation of a word indicates uniqueness. Examples include the *I*ndian Ocean and the *A*ndes (mountain range). The usage "a God" has an indefinite article at its start, indicating one of a number of gods, not a unique god, so the capitalisation is inappropriate. However (please excuse my continued pedantry), if you are referring to the biblical God, then any immediately preceding article in this context becomes redundant. But (yes, there is more), a preceding article is necessary when differentiating two specific and allegedly unique gods, as in for example the God of the Bible and the God of the Torah. Will anybody get as far as reading this final line? ;)
How do you rationalize the paranormal?
anglophone comments on May 1, 2020:
I do not accept the existence of "the paranormal". Every one of us lives in the natural world, and to claim that there are things are outside the natural world is absurd: if such things exist then they are be definition part of the natural world. To proclaim the existence of the paranormal is a guarantee of the existence of the corresponding mental midget.
Anyone ever just get mentally fatigued and emotionally drained?
anglophone comments on May 1, 2020:
I have never been where you now are, so please treat anything I say with all due circumspection. It sounds as if physical proximity (e.g. your own neighbourhood) to somebody who is important to you might count more for you than social media proximity to somebody else who would otherwise have the same worth to you. From my own perspective, I have had fantastic emotional relationships with people who I have never been within 5,000 miles of. Perhaps I have an unusual approach. Have you ever thought of moving to elsewhere within the USA, or perhaps to another country? Would such an idea even appeal to you? Would it even be possible for you given your present circumstances (of which I am wholly ignorant)? As a very dear friend who is also physically close sometimes says to her own intimates "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.".

Is the concept of a personal God needed in some individuals?
anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
The evidence is clear: some people feel the need for a personal god. Other members have posted below their ideas for the reasons why. Speaking for myself, I find the concept of the God of the Bible to be absurd, and the idea that said god could be my personal god to be quite ludicrous.

anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
It's a tired old and very absurd trope used by the God Mob. They misquote the burden of proof argument, which is correctly quoted as "The burden of proof rests with the one making the *existence* claim.". They also conveniently forget the fact that it is trivial to show that the God of the Bible cannot exist. The same goes for the God of the Torah.

Welcome to this community. I commend to you all nine comments below. For me, your wager is wasted. Moreover, it begs the question of "Which religion?", with the follow up question of "Which god or gods?". Something for you to ponder: nobody has ever demonstrated the existence of any god or gods in the last 5,000 years. As such, all such gods must be regarded as fictional, and all claims based on their (non-)existence must be regarded as absurd.
