I’m feeling sad, I can’t seem to break contact with this JW boyfriend.
anglophone comments on Mar 12, 2020:
He needs to live his own life, just as much as you need to live *your* own life. My guess is that he cannot abandon his own *ir*rationality any more than you can abandon your own rationality. He may be too driven by his own fears to question what he has been told by his theology teachers. It seems that religious trauma, such as he may have experienced, results in catastrophic damage to the pre-frontal cortex of the human brain, so the irrationality of "My god is the real god, all other gods are false gods" would not be apparent to him. Care for yourself. Know that there are others out there. Be kind to yourself, and be patient.

Surprises, yay or nay?
anglophone comments on Mar 11, 2020:
Some surprises can be good, many surprises can be bad. Being paid a compliment is an example of the former, getting engine oil in the radiator coolant is an example of the latter. P.S. I like your style here.

If an idea, or a set of ideas, has more explanatory power than another idea or ideas, I would not call it delusional. I would call it a better understanding (presumably of the world about you) or a more useful model of reality (whatever that is). Yes, I am a pedant when it comes to English usage, and being a pedant has both its advantages and its disadvantages. I am also blessed and cursed by having an analytical habit of mind, which is why I make a distinction between delusions and (better) understanding.

anglophone comments on Mar 5, 2020:
Well done you for recognising the myriad of logical fallacies that are used by the God Squad when they attempt to demonstrate the existence of their particular God. You might want to look into the history of the Bible (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bible ), the two Councils of Nicaea ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Council_of_Nicaea ), a comparison between the Bible and the Torah, and the mythology of virgin births ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miraculous_births ). It is worthwhile pointing out that it is trivial to show that the God of the Bible cannot exist: the claimed seven days of Creation does not match the observed 13.8 billion years, which immediately invalidates the rest of the Bible. Get out there, and *enjoy the rest of your life!*

What do you suppose gives rise to and supports belief in God?
anglophone comments on Mar 1, 2020:
Deities seem to have been the best explanation that early Man was able to come up with to explain the world around him. Examples include ancient Egypt, with its subsequent translations into the Greek and then the Roman gods, the Mayans, and the First Australians. As far as I know, the first monotheist was Akhenaten (died around 1335 BCE), and then there was Zoroaster (a.k.a Zarathustra) about 800 years afterwards. That theism still seems to be embedded in some cultures may be due to tribalism (the need to belong to a band of humans for survival purposes) being stronger than rationalism. (edited for typo)

From There to Here
anglophone comments on Feb 25, 2020:
The models of the natural world that come out of science are far more useful than the models that come out of religion. Putting it simply, "It [science] works, bitches!". There is also the issue that different religions and different sects within each religion often contradict each other. Again putting it simply "Therein lies madness!". My own journey out of theism started with Karl Popper's idea of falsifiability, the upshot of which was "Nobody has ever provided any falsifiable evidence to support the existence claim of any god in the last 5,000 years.".
What do Atheist think about reincarnation?

Belief: a position accepted as being true, but in the absence any supporting evidence. Belief system: a set of beliefs on a set of related matters. A belief system need not have a core concept as it can be built around an approach to explaining the natural world. Think of the Greek and Roman gods, along with Buddhism and Daoism.

The concept of God exists. To claim that "God exists ... as the beauty we see in the natural world" is to conflate ideas which conflating inevitably results in confusion. Religions, along with all their associated concepts, also exist. Trying to get rid of all concepts dealing with religions is as absurd as trying to get rid of the ideas of balrogs, pixies, and phlogiston.
